Sketches
These sketches were all done on a 5"×7" sketch book which revealed the design ideas and thinking process of a single family house built in Shunde, China. They started at the very beginning of the design stage but never concluded nor stopped until the project was finished. They were illustrations of a continuously evolving mental process, a somewhat simultaneous and sequential studies of the project site, orientation, landscape, building mass, exterior, interior, materials, light, shade and shadow. Some sketches are drawn more detailed than the other, it was because they represented different aspects of the design idea, e.g. the site sketch has more written text and data such as the "North" arrow, sunpaths, building programming while other have only a few"minimal" pencil strokes to represent the "presence" of a staircase, or the contrasting elements of shade and shadow.Nonetheless these sketches are never meant to be interpreted in the most literally sense, but rather to capture the "essence"needed to be preserved when the project materialised.
These sketches were developed, drawn and redrawn throughout the entire design process. The purposes of these sketches are two-fold: forward looking and backward refection. While it is important to capture the essence from the sketches through the built form (backward refection), they also served as arrows pointing to the next projects to be developed in our practice (forward looking). Often we would look back on the sketches we developed for a particular project and scrutinised on any "hidden" design ideas that were yet to be further developed in our next projects.□
