London Heathrow yesterday， Fumicino1） Rome today and Paris Orly2） tomorrow ... sounds glamorous， right？ Well， not so much to us， flight attendants who experience this week after week. The most frequently asked question I receive after people get to know what I do is： You must have seen so many different places， right？ The answer is no. Since it is our job， we are required to stay onboard the aircraft at all times and remain vigilant3）. Therefore， in this article I will be answering more of your questions and clarifying misconceptions by describing a typical day in the life of a flight attendant.

Wake up call

Early mornings are never easy， and I don't mean waking up at 06：30 a. m. for University or for a typical day of work at the office， I mean waking up at 03：00 or 04：00 a. m. to shower， do your make-up and set your hair. Sometimes， on a night standby4）， you may be woken up by a phone call from crew5） dispatch6）， only to be told to be at the airport， dressed and ready to operate a flight in a short amount of time. This means that you can forget staying up late or going out for drinks the night before. Having said this， an advantage to flying is that every flight is unique and interesting， another experience altogether， where we get the opportunity of meeting new people from different corners of the world and learn something new. This in mind， I proudly put on my uniform， pull my hair back， wear my makeup and make my way to the airport.

Duty time

On arriving at the airport， we discuss the flight ahead with the In-flight Manager. This involves discussing flying time， number of passengers， what duties and responsibilities each crew member will be in charge of， any special category passengers， special requests， safety and security procedures as well as emergency procedures including medical， planned and unplanned emergencies. After briefing7） is complete， we make our way through airport security and board the aircraft. At this point， we complete all the necessary pre-flight checks and wait for the passengers to board. We welcome passengers at the doors and some of the flight attendants assist passengers in the cabin8）with their seating. Safety always comes first and we are trained to work in an enclosed space， in a team environment and sometimes， even under pressure. We put customer service at the heart of our offer too.endprint

In-flight

When I used to go abroad with my family as a little girl， turbulence9） and ear pain were amongst my greatest concerns. Today， my only concern is not managing to finish the in-flight service on time if the plane encounters too much turbulence. Otherwise， flights are usually pleasant and involve seeing to the cockpit10）， delivering the in-flight service and socializing with the passengers. All this is obviously targeted to enhance the passenger experience. An advantage to this is that some passengers have very interesting things to relate11） to us， especially when meeting so many people from various countries with different cultures. In the fourteen months of flying experience， I have had the opportunity of meeting with Ministers， doctors， businessmen， politicians and members of parliament， as well as a famous actress.

昨天在倫敦希思羅機(jī)場(chǎng)，今天來(lái)羅馬菲烏米奇諾機(jī)場(chǎng)，明天去巴黎奧利機(jī)場(chǎng)……聽(tīng)起來(lái)很炫，是不是？好吧，對(duì)于我們這些一周接著一周體驗(yàn)這種生活的空乘來(lái)說(shuō)，并不完全如此。當(dāng)人們得知我的職業(yè)之后，最常問(wèn)我的一個(gè)問(wèn)題就是：你肯定游覽過(guò)許許多多不同的地方吧，對(duì)不對(duì)？答案是否定的。因?yàn)檫@是我們的工作，所以我們必須一直待在飛機(jī)上，并時(shí)刻保持機(jī)警。所以在本文中，我將通過(guò)向大家描述一位空乘日常的一天是如何度過(guò)的，來(lái)解答大家更多的疑問(wèn)，并澄清一些誤解。

被電話叫醒

早起從來(lái)都不是一件容易的事情，我指的可不是為了去大學(xué)上課或是在辦公室度過(guò)一個(gè)普通的工作日而在早上六點(diǎn)半起床，而是在凌晨三四點(diǎn)鐘就起床去沖澡、化妝和弄頭發(fā)。有時(shí)飛夜間航班待命時(shí)，你可能會(huì)被簽派員的一個(gè)電話叫醒，結(jié)果被告知你需要迅速趕到機(jī)場(chǎng)，整裝待發(fā)。這意味著你頭一天晚上就別再想熬夜或是出去喝酒這種事了。即便如此，飛來(lái)飛去也有一個(gè)好處，那就是每一次航班都是獨(dú)特而有趣的，都是一次完全不同的體驗(yàn)，我們?cè)诖诉^(guò)程中有機(jī)會(huì)結(jié)識(shí)來(lái)自世界各個(gè)角落的新朋友，并學(xué)到一些新的東西。想到這些，我自豪地穿上了我的制服，把頭發(fā)盤在腦后，化好妝，出發(fā)前往機(jī)場(chǎng)。

準(zhǔn)備上崗

一到機(jī)場(chǎng)，我們就會(huì)與航務(wù)經(jīng)理提前討論待飛航班的相關(guān)事宜，包括討論起飛時(shí)間、乘客人數(shù)、每個(gè)機(jī)組人員的任務(wù)和職責(zé)、有無(wú)特殊類別乘客、有無(wú)特殊要求、安全和安保程序以及緊急狀況處理程序（包括醫(yī)療緊急情況、有準(zhǔn)備的緊急情況和意外緊急情況）。情況介紹結(jié)束之后，我們通過(guò)機(jī)場(chǎng)安檢，然后登上飛機(jī)。此時(shí)，我們完成了起飛前的所有必要檢查，等待著乘客登機(jī)。我們站在艙門迎接乘客，一些乘務(wù)員則在客艙協(xié)助乘客落座。安全始終是第一位的，并且我們可是經(jīng)過(guò)訓(xùn)練的，要在封閉的空間內(nèi)、在團(tuán)隊(duì)環(huán)境中有時(shí)甚至還要在壓力之下工作。我們也把乘客服務(wù)置于我們工作的中心。

在飛行中

當(dāng)我還是個(gè)小女孩的時(shí)候，我常和家人一起坐飛機(jī)出國(guó)，最擔(dān)心的事情就包括遇到氣流和耳朵疼。如今，我唯一擔(dān)心的是如果飛機(jī)遇到太多的氣流，我會(huì)無(wú)法準(zhǔn)時(shí)完成機(jī)上的服務(wù)。除此之外，航班一般都令人愉快，只用照顧駕駛艙、提供機(jī)上服務(wù)以及和乘客交流即可。所有這一切顯然都是為了提升乘客體驗(yàn)的。這樣做的一個(gè)好處是，有些乘客會(huì)跟我們分享一些非常有趣的事情，特別是在遇到很多來(lái)自不同國(guó)家、有著不同文化背景的乘客的時(shí)候。在我14個(gè)月的空乘經(jīng)歷中，我有機(jī)會(huì)見(jiàn)到過(guò)數(shù)位部長(zhǎng)、醫(yī)生、商人、政客、議員以及一位著名的女演員。

Turnaround12）

After landing at our destination， we spend approximately an hour on ground. During this time， passengers disembark13）， cleaners board the aircraft to clean the cabin，galleys14） and lavatories15） and relevant security searches are completed by the operating crew. Then we embark16） passengers and prepare the cabin for take-off and for our flight back to Malta， or to another destination if the flight involves multiple sectors.

Back home

On our arrival in Malta， we bid farewell to the passengers and wish them a safe journey home， or a pleasant stay. We check the aircraft cabin， to ensure that nothing was left behind， we head our way back to the terminal17） and thank the crew for a pleasant flight. At this point， we all go our separate ways home to rest.

Despite the tiring days and nights working at 35，000 feet above ground， I enjoy flying and I do it with pride， knowing that whilst I am wearing the Air Malta uniform， I am representing my national airline. As an ambassador of Malta， I offer the diverse Maltese product and service and the unique hospitality of the people of Malta. The long flights and odd hours are part of the challenges and experience of working as a flight attendant for Air Malta.
