An Interview with Mr. BaiMa DorJi， the Founder of Songtsam Lodges Conducted by Hotel Elite

The beauty of landscape blending into the hotel is what the holiday hotel proprietors are going after. 酒店精品：中國(guó)的酒店很多都在城市里，開(kāi)創(chuàng)香格里拉第一家松贊林卡時(shí)城市酒店還沒(méi)有飽和，而且藏族知識(shí)精英很多也在大城市，干得出色的不乏人在，為什么白瑪老師會(huì)有勇氣回到藏區(qū)創(chuàng)建酒店？而且獨(dú)自親力親為？

白瑪多吉：其實(shí)，十六年前剛開(kāi)始做松贊的時(shí)候沒(méi)考慮那么多，就是受到央視同事們的啟發(fā)，他們?nèi)ノ业募亦l(xiāng)拍片子，說(shuō)那里住宿條件不好，啟發(fā)我說(shuō)應(yīng)該去做一個(gè)能住得好的地方。正好2000年左右我的家鄉(xiāng)更名為香格里拉，當(dāng)?shù)亻_(kāi)始發(fā)展旅游，我就下決心做了松贊綠谷。

那個(gè)時(shí)候就是我自己的一個(gè)住家，兩個(gè)院子的房子，我把它改造成了一個(gè)酒店。最重要的是，我發(fā)現(xiàn)松贊通過(guò)酒店這樣的方式，能成為我分享藏族文化的一個(gè)平臺(tái)，而這個(gè)平臺(tái)我之前希望能在央視找到，探索了那么多年發(fā)現(xiàn)很難。分享藏文化是我一直以來(lái)的目標(biāo)和追求，把我自己從藏文化中收獲的對(duì)于生命本質(zhì)和宇宙運(yùn)行規(guī)律的理解，通過(guò)合理的方式分享給更多的人，這就是這么多年來(lái)支持著我把松贊做下來(lái)最核心的動(dòng)力。然而文化分享不是馬上就能完成的，我先得通過(guò)世間法（佛學(xué)辭匯）的方式把酒店先做好，再依托酒店把旅游做好，然后客人才會(huì)對(duì)我、對(duì)松贊有信心，我們才能有機(jī)會(huì)很好的溝通，真正做到分享文化。

在藏族文化里有一個(gè)國(guó)度叫香巴拉，傳說(shuō)是一個(gè)和平寧?kù)o的國(guó)度，是一個(gè)極樂(lè)的世界。香巴拉王國(guó)的人跟我們現(xiàn)實(shí)的世界是有來(lái)往的。這個(gè)來(lái)往通過(guò)什么渠道來(lái)實(shí)現(xiàn)呢？就是通過(guò)一個(gè)叫地之肚臍的通道，從我的內(nèi)心來(lái)說(shuō)，我希望更多人可以沿著這條路到達(dá)那個(gè)最美國(guó)度。盡管我沒(méi)有能力找到地之肚臍并帶領(lǐng)大家真正去到香巴拉，但也許我可能自己來(lái)創(chuàng)造一個(gè)香格里拉的地之肚臍，帶大家到真正的香格里拉，離香巴拉的意境更近一點(diǎn)。

這是我選擇做酒店的原因，也是我的酒店坐落在這些地方的原因。至于那些大城市，好像跟我想做的事情沒(méi)有太大關(guān)系，香巴拉也不會(huì)在那些地方。

酒店精品：一個(gè)酒店在城市里能建好養(yǎng)好發(fā)展好都不容易，在偏遠(yuǎn)的山區(qū)為什么會(huì)聲名遠(yuǎn)揚(yáng)？我們?cè)?jīng)有十幾人去迪慶香格里拉專(zhuān)門(mén)入住松贊林卡，感受很深。您認(rèn)為松贊目前的成功原因是什么呢？

白瑪多吉：是啊，雖然我們經(jīng)歷了16年，但整個(gè)松贊發(fā)展特別順利，我也不知道憑什么，但我相信這就是因果，這就是我的發(fā)心，是我們良好的發(fā)心造就的緣起。從2000年到2014年，我們一直是處在一個(gè)實(shí)驗(yàn)的過(guò)程，我們不斷地探索。這些年來(lái)，我只要在松贊的話，我們松贊的客人就特別喜歡跟我交流，首先，他們會(huì)有各種各樣的疑問(wèn)，最核心的疑問(wèn)就是我們?cè)趺磿?huì)有這么好的松贊員工？他們是怎么培訓(xùn)出來(lái)的？

實(shí)際上，我剛才說(shuō)了，我看重發(fā)心，所以一直在培訓(xùn)大家的是一種意識(shí)。因?yàn)槲抑?，意識(shí)決定態(tài)度，態(tài)度決定行為，行為決定結(jié)果。

另一方面，在跟客人溝通的過(guò)程中，我也特別希望給他們一些啟發(fā)，可能很多人都會(huì)覺(jué)得我特別喜歡講發(fā)心和緣起。其實(shí)，不管做任何事情，特別是做我們現(xiàn)在的民宿行業(yè)，真是離不開(kāi)發(fā)心和緣起的關(guān)系，也就是因和果的關(guān)系。有一個(gè)好的發(fā)心，就會(huì)給你一個(gè)好的意識(shí)和態(tài)度，然后呢，就會(huì)呈現(xiàn)出一個(gè)好的結(jié)果。

這個(gè)道理我用了十六年時(shí)間，就是做松贊整整十六年的時(shí)間，自己慢慢總結(jié)出來(lái)的。

在做松贊的十六年過(guò)程里面，其實(shí)我們也不是一直閉門(mén)造車(chē)，不是總照著自己的想法來(lái)做，還是通過(guò)很多人給予的指導(dǎo)、交流，包括我們自己出去走、出去看獲得各種各樣的啟發(fā)，最后才沉淀出這樣一個(gè)業(yè)態(tài)，這樣一個(gè)商業(yè)模式。

我經(jīng)常說(shuō)，希望能造就一個(gè)通往香格里拉的地之肚臍。但究竟這個(gè)地之肚臍是什么樣的一個(gè)通道呢？怎樣才能找到路徑呢？我想這不是可以取巧的，也無(wú)法找到捷徑的，而完完全全是在學(xué)習(xí)和操作的過(guò)程里面一點(diǎn)一滴的矯正，一步一步的生長(zhǎng)而成的，最后凝聚出一種好的因果方式，最終走上這條理想的通途。

白瑪多吉：故事很多，也不知從何講起，談?wù)勎业母惺馨伞?/p>

現(xiàn)在的人，太過(guò)看重結(jié)果，追求所謂的成功，也特別計(jì)較得失，總覺(jué)得自己會(huì)失去什么、錯(cuò)過(guò)什么，背著這些沉重的包袱走的很累，也很難往前走。這一切最核心的原因就是大家都相信“人生苦短”，就這七八十年，最多一百年。在這短短的人生當(dāng)中一定要爭(zhēng)取所謂的寬度、深度，豐富多彩。

而對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō)，隨著我做松贊，我對(duì)藏族文化中對(duì)于生命認(rèn)識(shí)的核心觀念已經(jīng)越來(lái)越明確，換句話來(lái)說(shuō)，我已經(jīng)完全認(rèn)證了生命是個(gè)漫長(zhǎng)的、循環(huán)往復(fù)的、無(wú)始無(wú)終的過(guò)程這個(gè)真理。

因此，當(dāng)我發(fā)現(xiàn)原來(lái)人生并非苦短、生命非常漫長(zhǎng)的時(shí)候，我的計(jì)劃就完全改變了。我不再患得患失，不再急功近利，也不會(huì)特別看重所謂的“結(jié)果”，反而我很享受每一個(gè)當(dāng)下，不論是遇到麻煩、痛苦、快樂(lè)，我都能從容面對(duì)。我做的事情也會(huì)考慮得更加長(zhǎng)遠(yuǎn)，所以松贊從選址、建筑到運(yùn)營(yíng)都是按照百年甚至更加長(zhǎng)久可持續(xù)的思路來(lái)做的。

還有，比如民宿這個(gè)行業(yè)，可能扎進(jìn)去就是一輩子。其實(shí)，做任何事情，特別是做我們民宿這個(gè)行業(yè)，真是離不開(kāi)發(fā)心和緣起，都擺脫不了因果關(guān)系。對(duì)于我來(lái)說(shuō)呢，我用了十六年時(shí)間做松贊，總結(jié)出來(lái)了，而且領(lǐng)悟到了這樣一種關(guān)系。這個(gè)道理不是說(shuō)之前不懂，都懂，但是呢，最后真要把這樣的道理融匯在自己的行為里才行。不是說(shuō)你大概弄懂就可以的，你肯定是要完成這種親歷親為的確認(rèn)，一輩子的時(shí)間用來(lái)體驗(yàn)和確認(rèn)。

我還有個(gè)認(rèn)識(shí)，我們做任何事情，其實(shí)需要大量的溝通和交流。從宏觀上來(lái)說(shuō)，要通過(guò)溝通和交流后才能產(chǎn)生一個(gè)很深刻的認(rèn)識(shí)；從微觀上說(shuō)，特別像做民宿，整個(gè)運(yùn)作其實(shí)是一個(gè)特別麻煩的過(guò)程，需要無(wú)數(shù)細(xì)節(jié)的理解、思考和矯正。我與松贊的很多客人交流時(shí)，通過(guò)表達(dá)我的想法，獲取他們的理解，然后呢，就是獲取他們的想法。這時(shí)候，表達(dá)我的想法對(duì)他們有一些啟發(fā)，這是我特別想做的事情，不是說(shuō)我有多厲害，這是文化里的東西，通過(guò)溝通和交流讓別人獲得啟發(fā)，這是一個(gè)特別好的事情；同時(shí)，我在和客人交流的過(guò)程中，其實(shí)也能有特別多的收獲，這種收獲就是人們看待松贊的不同角度和不同觀點(diǎn)。然后呢？我知道應(yīng)該怎么去矯正，應(yīng)該怎么去實(shí)現(xiàn)更高品質(zhì)，我要繼續(xù)認(rèn)真做好這件事情。

Hotel Elite：：Most of the hotels in China are located in cities. When you founded the first Songtsam Retreat， the hotels in cities were not saturated. Furthermore， there were many Tibetan elites in the cities， many of which did a great job at their jobs. Why did you have the courage to go back to Tibetan areas to found the hotel and to add on to that， did everything on your own？

BaiMa DorJi： Actually， I did not think that much when I first started founding Songtsam sixteen years ago. I was simply inspired by my colleagues at CCTV. Many of them went to my hometown to shoot videos and complained about the lousy accommodation conditions there. They inspired me with idea of providing better accommodation there. In 2000， my hometown just happened to change its name to Shangri-la and started to develop its tourism. I therefore set my mind to found Songtsam Lvgu.

At the time it just started from my house， which had two yards， so I rebuilt my house to a hotel. More importantly， I found that through building a hotel in Songtsam， I gained a platform for sharing Tibetan culture， which I had been looking for when I was working at CCTV before， but found really hard after years of efforts. Sharing Tibetan culture has been my constant goal and pursuit. All these years when I have been working on Songtsam， it has been my primary motivation to share my perception and comprehension in the nature of life and rules of the universe gained from Tibetan culture through appropriate means. However， it was not a one-day job to share a culture. I had to first do a good job in founding the hotel through Worldly Dharma （Buddist glossary）， and then do a good job in developing tourism on the basis of the hotel. Only then would my guests have faith in me and Songtsam. Only then could we have the opportunity to communicate better and truly share the culture.

In Tibetan culture， there is a kingdom called Shambhala， which is said to be a peaceful land and a true paradise. There are communications between the kingdom of Shambhala and our world. Yet how can these communications be realized？ It is through a pathway called the bellybutton of the earth. From the bottom of my heart， I hope that more people can reach that beautiful kingdom through this pathway. Although I don't have the capability to find the bellybutton of the world and lead people to the Shambhala， maybe I can create one in Shangri-la on my own and lead people to the true Shangri-la， so that we are all closer to the state in the Shambhla.

So， that was why I chose to build a hotel and that is why my hotels are all located in these places. As for those big cities， they are not really related to what I want to do， nor would they be where Shambhala be at.

Hotel Elite：：It is not easy for a hotel to be built， maintained， or developed well， so why would a hotel be famous in a remote mountain area. We once had more than ten people going to Diqing Shangri-la just to stay in Songtsam Linka and were really impressed by the experiences. I have to ask you， what is the reason for success of Songtsam as of right now？

BaiMa DorJi： Yeah. Although we have gone through 16 years， but during the whole time Songtsam developed very smoothly. I have no idea why， but I believe that it is the cause-and-effect. It is the result from my solemn motivation. From 2000 to 2014， we were in a process of experimenting and consistent exploration. In these past few years， the guests in Songtsam loved to talk to me every time I was there. At first， they would have various kinds of questions. But what is the core question？ It is that how we get such great Songtsam staff members and how they are trained.

In fact， as I said earlier， I have a strong focus on motivation， so I have been training people on a sort of awareness. Because I know that the awareness leads to the attitude， the attitude leads to the behavior， and the behavior leads to the result.

On the other hand， while communicating with the guests， I want to give them some inspiration. Many people think I particularly like to speak about the heart and intentions. No matter what you do， especially in the current accommodation industry， you really cannot do without a good heart and good intentions.

In fact， they create a cause and effect relationship. Have a good heart， it will give you a good attitude， and then， it will produce good results.

I spent 16 years at Songtsam to slowly sum up this principle.

The 16 year process of creating Songtsam was actually not always behind closed doors， not always just trying to realize my own ideas. Through a lot of people's guidance， interactions， going out to get inspiration， we finally settled on this type of management method and business model.

I often say， I hope to create the bellybutton of earth as the path leading to Shangri-La. But what kind of path is this bellybutton of earth？ How can we find it？ I think there are no tricks， no shortcuts. You can only make corrections bit by bit in the process of learning and operation， grow step by step， to finally solidify a cause and effect method， and to eventually embark on this ideal path.

BaiMa DorJi： It is a long story， I do not know where to start， maybe with my feelings.

Nowadays people value results too much， and they are in pursuit of the so-called success， but troubled by failure； they always feel that they will lose or miss something. Carrying these heavy burdens is tiring， making it difficult for them to move forward. The core reason is that we all believe \"life is short\"， these seventy or eighty years， at most a hundred. In this short life we must fight for the so-called depth， breadth， and color.

But for me， as I create Songtsam， I become more and more clear about the core concepts of life in Tibetan culture. In other words， I have fully authenticated the truths that life is endless， works in cycles， and has no beginning or ending.

When I found that life is not too short， that in fact life is endless， my plans completely changed. I no longer worry about the outcome， quick success， do not particularly value the so-called \"results\"， but enjoy every moment. I calmly face trouble， pain， happiness and consider things more in the long-term. Songtsam from the location， construction and operation are based on centuries or even longer-term sustainable thinking. Also， the accommodation industry is something you enter for life. Now， many people know I particularly like to speak about the heart and intentions. In fact， no matter what you do， especially in the current accommodation industry， you really cannot do without a good heart and good intentions， you cannot escape the causal relationship. Because， cause is the heart； result is the intention. From a macro point of view， when you do anything， first of all you have values， then values will determine your attitude， and then values plus attitude plus behaviour will determine your results. This is the whole heart and intentions of the relationship， the causality of the relationship.

I spent sixteen years making Songtsam to sum up and realize this relationship. This is not to say that I did not understand before， I completely understood it， but， finally I really wanted to integrate this truth in my behavior. Understanding is not enough， you must to complete this kind of personal experience to confirm it， spend a lifetime to experience it and confirm it.

I have another understanding. Whatever we do， actually， requires a lot of communication and exchange. From a macro point of view， you need communication and exchange to create a deep understanding. From a micro point of view， especially as a guesthouse， the whole operation is a particularly troublesome process， and requires the understanding of numerous details， continuous thinking and correction. You know， as long as I am in Songtsam， many of our Songtsam guests like to talk to me. In this relationship， first I can express my ideas， get their understanding， and then get their ideas. At this time， the expression of my ideas gives them inspiration. This is something I want to do in particular. I am not telling them how fantastic I am， but I am talking to them about culture. It is an extremely good thing to inspire others through communication and exchange； at the same time my communication with the guests brings about a special result. The result being that I understand the different perspectives and different points of view through which people look at Songtsam.

And then I know how to put things straight and achieve better quality. And I want to continue to do this seriously.
