The Golden Compass is the first movie based on the Philip Pullmans best-selling novel, His Dark Materials. It is a work of imagination that tells us about a young girl who travels to the far north to save her best friend. Along the way she meets strange creatures, like witches and so on. Finally, she saves not only her world, but also ours as well.

Lyra is a young girl among scholars (好學(xué)生) in Oxfords Jordan College. She spends most of her time with her friend Roger, a kitchen boy. Together, they share a life with no worries. However, when Lyra hears a conversation about a very tiny particle (粒子), she is thrown into a dangerous adventure. This particle is said to unite different worlds, and is feared by many people who want to destroy it. At the same time, children began to disappear without a sign, including Lyras good friend, Roger. As Lyra starts this horrible struggle and begins to search for Roger, she meets strange creatures both big and small, and bad people who are not what they seem to be. Gobblers that kidnap (綁架) children appear in the most unexpected places. And a magical compass made of gold will answer any question if one is skilled enough to read it. In unbelievable danger, Lyra doesnt know that she is doomed to win, or to lose this battle.

With the movie The Lord of the Rings making New Line Cinema over a billion dollars, its easy to see why they got the rights to Pullmans His Dark Materials quickly. The books, sold more than nine million copies in the world, have a different idea from the Harry Potter series. C. New Line Cinema won Pullmans trust through its achievement.

Who should eat the small patch of green grass? “BAA, BAA! Go ahead and eat it. I am not very hungry,” said Big Sheep and he began to move away. “Baa! Let us share the green grass,” said Small Sheep. Working from home is more and more popular as a means of escaping the nine-to-five office life. Why do you work under the eye of your boss when you can work in front of the TV in your slippers? Armed with all the necessary things—telephone, computer, e-mail and fax, many workers believe they can work as effectively as their colleagues in the office. Being able to work wherever you like—from a busy city to a village, and not having to stand the daily things, make working from home an attractive choice. If you wish, you can even work on a river boat.

So what will become of the office tomorrow? It is possible that many could go into computer space creating a new wave of virtual (虛擬的) offices. To minimize (使最小化) offices in inner-city areas, companies will have a work force made up of a network of home workers linked by an advanced communication and information system. A central processing computer would be controlled by the manager who sends out work schedules and oversees (監(jiān)視) the activities of each employee.

A video screen would be created, as the need for e-mail or telephone becomes greater. Seeing the mood and expressions of work colleagues, managers would have the ability to view several employees at once on their screen. Employees would be encouraged to feed any information that may be useful to fellow workers into the computer to make the company work more effectively. As the companys life blood, the computer would contain a record of all conversations and communication for future reference and hold secret information such as accounts in password protected areas.

        28. Which is an advantage of a virtual office?

        A. There arent strict time limits. B. Employees arent overseen by the manager.

        C. Employees neednt see each other every day. D. Fewer employees are needed in every company.

        29. Which is the most necessary for a virtual office?

        A. A manager. B. A telephone.

        C. An e-mail and a fax. D. A central processing computer.

        30. We can learn from the passage that in a virtual office ____ .

        A. all information is open to workers B. a computer is the only necessary thing

        C. managers can observe their employees D. the number of employees will be smaller

        31. What does the passage mainly talk about?

        A. The importance of working in the future. B. How to work with a computer.

        C. How to escape from your office. D. Virtual offices in the future.

        D

“Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity,” said Oprah Winfrey, an American talk show host. Ive never watched her show, but when a self-made billionaire gives life advice, its probably worth listening to.

Her point is that blind luck is very rare. You may have to be lucky to find a good job these days but that does not mean you should sit at home waiting for the opportunity to come to you. If youre a Chinese, you may already be familiar with the story of a farmer waiting by a tree stump (樹(shù)樁) for a rabbit to run out and break its neck.

A book by the UK psychologist Richard Wiseman, called The Luck Factor, argues we can all make ourselves luckier. Its not about going to a temple to burn some incense (香) in hopes that the gods will give you good fortune; its practical advice you can follow each day.

Wiseman conducted an experiment as part of his studies. First he divided volunteers into two groups: those who said they were lucky in life and those who said they were not. He gave everyone a newspaper and asked them to look through it to count how many photographs it had inside. On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs while the lucky people took just seconds. Why? On the second page of the newspaper, a command, “Stop counting. There are 43 photographs in this newspaper,” was written in big letters. The unlucky people mostly did not recognize the message.

Its easy to compare this situation to a young person looking for jobs in a local paper. They might search so hard for one type of position that they miss an even better opportunity. People who are “l(fā)ucky”, in fact, keep an open mind and dont go through the same routine every day.

I first came to China in 2002 when it was considered a rather strange thing to do. Like many foreigners, my plan was to teach English for one year. Twelve years later, and still here, Ive had many great opportunities such as writing for newspapers and magazines. I did not dream these would have been possible. Ive also never been sick, had an accident, got into a fight or had problems with the police. Coincidence? After reading about Professor Wisemans studies I think not.

As Wiseman advises, I usually trust my own judgment. Your friends and parents may give you advice based on reasonable thinking, but its important to consider how you feel about each choice you make. Your feeling acts as a warning for a possible problem.

Finally, try to turn bad luck into good. Even if you do fall down and break a leg, the time spent at home can be used wisely to study English.

        32. What can you know about Oprah Winfrey according to Paragraph 1?

        A. She was very lucky and seldom suffered setbacks in her life.

        B. She became famous through her family background.

        C. She became successful through her own effort.

        D. She is a British talk show host.

        33. What does the writer want to show by telling a Chinese story of a farmer?

        A. Luck is in your own hand.

        B. Man can overcome nature.

        C. Bad luck can turn into good.

        D. The opportunity wont come to you without your own efforts.

        34. What conclusion did Wiseman draw from the experiment?

        A. Lucky people are quick-minded. B. Unlucky people are slow to read.

        C. Lucky people often have an open mind. D. Unlucky people are more creative.

        35. Which of the following proverbs most agrees with the writers point?

        A. Make the best of a bad job. B. Rome was not built in a day.

        C. All is not gold that shines brightly. D. A good heart overcomes ill fortune.

For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshopping—watching TV and buying things by phone. 36 In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things.

37 For example, the biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two teleshopping channels, and the French spend about $20 million a year to buy things through those channels.

In Germany, until last year teleshopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed more teleshopping. Other channels can open for telebusiness, including the largest American teleshopping company and a 24-hour teleshopping company. 38

Some people like teleshopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason, but at the same time, other Europeans do not like this new way of shopping. 39 Many Europeans usually worry about the quality of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV.

The need for high quality means that European teleshopping companies will have to be different from the American companies.

40 They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.

        A. Teleshopping is popular among young people.

        B. They call teleshopping “Junk on the air”.

        C. Now teleshopping is starting in European.

        D. Teleshopping is becoming popular in Sweden.

        E. The German teleshopping business is controlled by Americans.

        F. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell.

        G. German businesses are hoping this new teleshopping will help them sell more things.

        36. 37. 38. 39. 40.
