Construction of Digital Editing Environment:Analysis Based on the Perspective of the Academic Journal

To build digital editing environment of academic journals is of great significance to improve the quality andefficiencyof journal editing,especially for ease of editorial staff work burden and liberation of the editor productivity,in the transformation from traditional manual operation mode to artificial intelligent editing. Digital editing environment has the traits of data standardization, process automation, intelligent decision-making and operating humanization. Among them, the periodical collaborative platform, hermas proof reading system, group messaging platform, APP, SNS, RSS and cross-media publishing are the main elements of building the digital editing environment of academic journal. In the information society,it is a creative and funny try to make full use of the advantages of digital communication for better service in academic journal editing publishing,no matter for what age group of editing group.The trans formation from the traditional manual operation mode to artificial intelligent editor realized the profound change in the general skills of editing industry and can improve the quality and efficiency of editing reviewing and processing. Cottagemode of editing production can not adapt tothe academic production machine operation and the needs of the modern publishing. In the digital transformation of editing, to promote the innovation ability of the editorial staff, we should build the digital editing environment.

1 Definition of the digital editing environment

1.1Literaturereview

Communication research in recent years is applied to the research on digital editing. 2011, Sun Kangjiang and other people put forward NPDE (No Record Paper Digitizing Eedit), the paperless digital editing techniques which use computer hardware and software as editing tools for publications, editing, designing and publishing. In this paper, the advantage of NPDE was summarized as: significantly increasingtalent efficiency and green economic benefits. 2012, Li Shuoetal. put forward the concept of digital editing application mode,that is“editingby using modern computer tools (such as WORD, dark horse check software, etc.) and completely out of paper manuscript review mode.” In this paper, the advantage of digital editing was summarized as: to improve the speed of editing (using the WORD function such as search and replace), to increase the accuracy of editing (WORD prompt function and black), to improve the efficiency of the communication between editors and authors, to enhance the working efficiency of the layout (directly reflect the layout requirements), to increase ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning Enterprise Resource Planning system) application base (data standardization, process automation, intelligent decisions)and to green environmental protection(save a lot of paper costs and protect the forest resources). This paper also gave percentage data of enhancing the average working efficiency of paper editing and digital editing. Gao Xining et al.analyze the advantages of the digital editing, including: it is clear and easy to identify (model, using the document revision/notation for information transfer between three check); it effectively improves the editing precision (change the naked eye identification approach which relies completely on editing background and working experience to prevent the quality of the manuscript uneven for editing and professional quality); it reduces the time of passing manuscript (outside and back check don’t require careful entity manuscript transfer, and email is instantaneous without lossor replication); and it is beneficial for the follow links to work smoothly. The results of this study laid certain foundation for follow-up study.

1.2Definition

This paper argued that it is commendable for the concept of paperless to emphasize environmental protection, but the effect digital way of life brings on the way of human behavior including editing work, and does not lie mainly in its economic value. In fact, for academic journals, high-quality and high-efficiency editing work is still its reasonable connotation. So-called high quality editing work suggests that work process and result has the scientific, reasonable, fair and impartial, accurate and precise characteristics, and high-efficiency is the rational allocation of human resources. The difficult problems which have long plagued the academic periodicals, such as the fair review and science evaluation, are relieved to a certain degree and range after the use of digital platform, due to the standardization of the process. At the same time, the draft selection and editorial quality are the foundation of publication, so to improve the efficiency of editing work is the inevitable trend in the modernization of publishing.The digital editing can resolve the conflict between the editor quality and efficiency with its high quality, highly effective, convenient,comprehensive and objective solution and completely surpasses the traditional editing. Digital editing gets the more and more favour of young editors.

Based on the above views and materials, this paper put forward that digital editing refers to the way of working which does subjects select, manuscripts solicitation, accept contribution, auditing judgment, modify, proofreading and rechecking, information interaction by using digital technology and means on the basis of computer and network. Existing editing environment (environment) refers to the surrounding conditions which always relatives to a center of things. As environment refers to the outside world around the human and the complex of the material conditions for human survival and development.Environment provides a broad space, rich resources and the necessary conditions for human social production and life. Broadly speaking, the environment includes the natural environment and social environment. In this article, editing environment refers to the social environment or work environment. In combination with the concept of digital editing, this paper argued that digital editing environment refers to the editing work environment by digital technology and means.

1.3Relevantconception

Digital editingis different from digital publishing. Wang Shuhua(2008) thinks that digital publishing is “the process of editing the content of the digital works and copying it to the public from the spread”. Digital publishing (or digital publishingwhich is the upgraded version of the former, refers to the digital publishing of unified form) is the concept replace of “electronic publishing, network publishing” and new publishing forms(including mobile phones, etc.)generalizing from the technical attributes. While digital editing isgeneralized from editing techniques and processes.

2 Analysis of the characteristics of digital editing environment

For academic journals, cited/download situation of single papers, the author’s influence, cited/download situation of interdisciplinary papers , the author’s regional distribution, the composition of RSS readers, the distribution of institutions and individuals, subject the cited/download frequency, WEB download time are basic data whichis closely related to the editing work.The masterand statistical analysis of the data areclosely related to correctly measure the success of editing work, find problems, increase and improve the quality of editing work. If there is no data to support, editors can only judge by feeling and so can not evaluate. In the digital editing environment, the journal editorial platform and comprehensive utilization of literature platform can provide accurate and detailed data support. This makes digital editing based on solid scientific foundation. In particular, digital editing environment has the following characteristics.

2.1Datastandardization

With CNKI “China academic journal impact factor annals of publication” statistical analysis database as an example, after entering the user name and password, you can enter our database for the statistical analysis of the influence to analysis the elements. Interface provides content structure analysis:

1) Including this interdisciplinary identification, specific gravity and literature influence evaluation, reflecting the direction of our major disciplines, help editorin optimization filling content. The system provides the ratio of our annual number of papers in this subject by the total number of the newspaper articles and by the national post inthis discipline, the total cited frequency of the journal, thes is and doctor dissertation, and the downloaded frequency of the CNKI website users.

2) The manuscript quality analysis.It can supplythe statistical analysis on the principal and interest, 44 interdisciplinary international, national level (28 ministries), 323 provincial colleges and universities fund papers and academic misconduct literature, especially,it can carry on the statistics report of a raging (the same author published two articles in full text contact ratio greater than 90%), the suspected copy (the same author published two articles in full text contact ratio more than 40% and less than 90%) and suspected plagiarism (different authors published two articles in full contact ratio above 40%), so it reflects the subject paper quality and provides the corresponding reference for editorial office to control the quality of articles.

3) The analysis of author. It can analyze the number of the interdisciplinary literature writers’articles and the total articles and the quality of the manuscript, helping to get a comprehensive understanding of the author’s research direction and academic advantage. From descending rank,you can see this number, total cited frequency and total download frequency parameters and soon.

4) Analysis of published timeliness. It can supply the statistical analysis of the periods about the average delay and sequential change post (we can see the publication delay rate of each publication from the previous), helping to develop targeted solutions and speed up the process.

All the above data are supported by standardized statistical methods and are accurate and credible.

2.2Theprocessautomation

With CNKI platform as an example (journal collaborative editorial system), the platform provides editorial office system, peer review system and the author put into system. When entering the the editing center, youcan carry on office affairs like filming, editing and examination, management of articles, management of the author information and careful outside experts. The working process fully automated. Coordinating editor first trial, upload blind, hiring, edit, review, review and final processing, the authors taking back, arrangement of rejection are automated fully. As long as carried out in accordance with the relevant procedures for the operation, the system will automatically response into the next process, including reviewing, checking opinions sending, first notice sending and sending rejection, the machine automatic correction etc. The system also has automatic hinting and urging function. Editing system commissioning function can be used to automate some wisdom. At the same time, in the submitted manuscript, you can select related discipline experts across the country by experts and scholars database function.The system can directly send information and review articles to all registered subject experts. Ordered by the experts and academic influence of database, you can select the appropriate expert to review.

2.3Intelligentdecision-making

The most important decision in the process of editing is manuscript selecting. In the process of going over manuscripts, trade-off of manuscriptis judged by the naked eye in the traditional editing. Under the digital editing environment, the manuscript processing can be based on the data support. Concrete manifestation in:

1) The intelligent judgment of topic selection. You can determine the topic of academic attention and user attention by retrieving the academic research trend of review articles and do trade-off judgment for hot topics or unpopular topic. Especially,the editor should pay great attention to topic selection of user attention growth momentum.

2) The intelligent judgment of its author. Through query of the author direction and academic advantages and retrieval of academic integrity,you can filter articles of the same or similar topics from the perspective of the author and select the manuscript with academic advantage and abide by the academic standard.

2.4Humanoperation

Under the digital editing environment, the traditional way of proofreading is replaced. The electronic manuscripts,once it is confirmed by the author, after converted into PS typesetting format file, it will be intact perfectly.As a result, there is no need for the traditional control and proofreading (proofread similarities and differences). So, it will greatly reduce the workload of the personnel and the traditional textual criticism history is rewritten. Except in German, Greek, oracle, you do not directly from WORD conversion typesetting text symbols, and it only needs to be controlled. In the redaction unity mode, the article editor should give priority to read and proofread, with the calibration of knowledge and professional language advantage, trying to eliminate the wrong character and grammar, pragmatics, semantics pragmatically, and review the unity of format.

3 Examplesfor application of academic journal editing environment platform

Through the link, we can view the CNKI academic trend and carry on the retrieval of the academic attention (number) and user attention (downloads). If you input the word “digital editing”, it shows that the cited article related to the research originally published in 1999, but the literature which officially proposed digital editing was published in 2012, a total of 2 articles,“Digital editing will change the traditional way of editing work” written by Li Shuo, Zhang Tun, Shi Minggui and Gao Xining and “Analysis of the advantages of digital editing” written by Gao Xining, Zhang Tun and Du Jian-wei. 2013 is the year with the highest literature cited times, a total of 12 articles cited above minimum 1 time. The highest downloads related literature was published in 2007, that is “Digital publishing on the influence of the traditional publishing business process” written by LYU Zhijun which was up to the downloads peak (133 times) in 2003. If you open the paper, you can also see the cited literature, cited literature, and secondary cited literature of this study, can further reflecting the development and evaluation of this research.

4) The author post retrieval.

So, the time and energy ofmost of the editors are consumed in the proofreading and the improvement of basic care and their own quality can not be accomplished. In addition,the author utilitarianism prevails and the original text is inevitable to be slack, so the editors often become “secretary” or “Chinese teacher of primary and secondary schools” of the authors who have no time to complete their achievements. Application of dark horse proofreading will liberate editorial staff from the heavy manual labor to a certain extent, which is a big good for editing.

The system is powerful and highly intellectualized operation. Specificallyit include: checking the heavy sentence, proofreading punctuation, proofreading technology measuring symbols, sorting and proofreading leaders list, proofreading catalogue,checking the Taiwan issue. The software also provides modification suggestions, red for highly suspected error, pink for suspected error.You can also define the wrong word, neologisms,which is very suitable for professional academic articles. It is important to note that the vast majority of the SMS platform is for large and medium-sized users, SMS starting point for the minimum is 3 000. If the small publication clubs think that the number is too much,they can choose the way to the WEB,not enterprise messaging interface.Takingshort letter operations management platform in China (China SMS) as an example, the minimum starting point can be 1 000. 3.4Outlook(APP,socialnetworking,RSS,crossmediapublishing)

The construction of digital editing environmentis not just for manuscripts, contributions solicitation, reviewing and processing modification part.In fact, the journal of digital content delivery, custom and cross-media publishing is indispensable. At present, some journals are already using a custom APP (Application, third-party applications of smartmobiles) to push digital content. By clicking, you can download ELLE Chinese version of the IPhone APP. RenRen networkisthe representative of Social Networking SNS (Social Networking Services), attracting a large number of college students. QQ, We Chat, Weibo are alsosocial networks which can interact with readers and push the content of the digital publishing by public subscription form. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is the simple way that the site is used to share content between other sites (also called polymerization content). RSS using XML (Extensive Markup Language) as a standard way of sharing content with each other. Cross-media publishing is academic information transmission in different transmission medium. Mass media including newspapers, magazines, radio, television, network and so on.Mobile phones, mobile TV, and many other new media also play an increasingly important role. In the currenthighly competitive mediaconditions, media has broken the fragmented, mutual blockade of warlordism, and seeking cooperation and mutual assistance and integration between media becomes the effective way. For the user of the younger generation,published handset of academic journals is imperative.

Above all, to build digital editing environment plays the ground breaking role to improve the quality and the efficiency of journals. At the same time,it has a promoting effect to reduce editorial staff work load and liberate the editing productivity. In the face of fierce competition between the media, it is more competitive for the editing and publication idea of “content is king” to include digital living environment.The future of journals will be wedded to the digital transmission technology and means, so as to create a better future of academic journal.
