        Humanistic education in college English teaching

        I.Introduction

        Over the past 20 years, Chinese higher education has obtained considerable development, both in quantity and scale.The university has made the important contribution to the national scientific and technological progress, and economic development.But at the same time, affected by market economy, some colleges and universities curriculum only focus on practical, and scientific courses.A lot of problems can be seen for college students.Humanistic education is absent in the contemporary English teaching, which is quite worrisome.Cheating in exams, weak in social responsibility, and utilitarian are just a few examples.How to enhance the humanistic quality of the students has become a social issue.College English is an important basic course in higher education, the textbook covers a wide range of professional and cultural content.Besides, the course is taken by all the freshmen and sophomores in university.In this new situation, to explore how to give humanistic education in college English teaching has the important practical significance.

        II.Strategies of humanistic education in English teaching

        First of all, college English teachers should change their educational idea, and strengthen their humanistic cultivation.Each student is an independent individual who has his own thoughts, and ideas.So education is a process through which students can receive knowledge in the textbook and moral lessons hidden in the book.Therefore, teachers should give priority to the cultivation of English application ability, rather than the usage of words and grammar.

        Second, learning English is not only to learn the skills of language, but also a kind of culture of learning through experience, as professor Wang Shou ren points out, English is a branch of the humanities, the basic elements of learning English is the English language, literature and culture.Language is the carrier of culture.Culture is the content of language.English curriculum contains rich humanistic education resources be richly endowed by nature, has the humanities education conditions.Therefore, cultural consciousness should be aroused in class teaching.

        The teaching mode should follow the general laws of foreign language teaching, which include the lexical interpretation, discourse analysis and literary appreciation from the shallow to the deep, layer upon layer.In College English teaching, we should focus on the words and phrases in the cultural knowledge.For example, in unit 2 of New horizon College English book II for listening and speaking, the topic is about punctuation.First, teach the students vocabulary in this unit.Make the students understand the English vocabulary; and then, introduce different cultural information on time-consciousness.Students will know more about the cultural differences between east and west.Later, tell students that it is not polite to be late in class and in an appointment, which belongs to humanistic education.Students will have sense of punctuality and discipline in life.The cultural part in class teaching is effective in developing students comprehensive ability.

        Finally, humanistic education should be carried on not only in class time but also in other forms.Flipped classroom on culture, for example, creates a good cultural atmosphere.General education class can also arouse the cultural sense of the students.Teachers can also introduce some English literary works, newspapers and magazines, books and so on.As the electronic products are popular, e-resources are abundant.The original movies and literary works are a good help for the textbook, which can accelerate students vocabulary and cultivate mind.

        Ⅲ.Conclusion

        Humanistic education is the need of globalization.In college English teaching, the implementation of humanistic education is to improve the students ideological, moral, scientific and cultural qualities.Most of all, it is a long-term and all-round education teaching idea.Teachers in the classroom combine humanistic education to teaching, so that both teachers and students can improve their comprehensive abilities.
