Sweet-faced,curly-haired Shirley Temple was born in Santa Monica,California in April,1928.She was enrolled(入學)in dance school at the age of three.

By the age of six,she had been able to match the great Bill Robinson and tap-dance(跳踢踏舞)down the staircase(樓梯)in“The Little Colonel”.She found fame as a young girl in the 1930s in films like“Bright Eyes”,“Stand Up and Cheer”and“Curly Top”.

She acted in even better“Captain January”,for her role in which she got a special Academy Award in 1935,when she was just six years old.To this day (迄今),she is still the youngest person to receive an Academy Award.Between 1935 and 1938,her films had been tops for four years.No onewould doubt that she could act if they watched her five different expressionswhile eating in“Poor Little Rich Girl”.

Advertisers adored(崇拜；熱愛)Temple,from General Electric to soap to cars.Her face was on the food boxes,bowls and cups.She even had a drink named after her.After“Stand up and Cheer”,dolls wearing her polka-dot (圓點紋)dress appeared,and after“Bright Eyes”,themusic“The Good Ship Lollipop”was on every piano,aswell as in everyone’s brain.

After retiring from films in 1950 at the age of 21,Temple returned to the public eye in politics.She unsuccessfully ran for Congress(議會)as a Republican(共和黨)in 1967. But,she was appointed as America’s ambassador(大使)to Ghana(加納)in 1974.
