Principle一詞在課文“WherePrinciplesComeFirst”中的詞義

在英語中一詞多義的現(xiàn)象十分普遍，讀者常常需要根據(jù)上下文來判斷一個單詞在文中的具體詞義。在課文“Where Principles Come First”中，principle 一詞雖重復(fù)出現(xiàn)，卻表達了不同的詞義。該詞對課文的理解起著至關(guān)重要的作用，而該教材教師用書對該詞的理解卻頗為不當。

一詞多義；結(jié)構(gòu)分析；principle

在學習和使用英語的過程中，一詞多義的現(xiàn)象是十分普遍的。通常一詞可以屬于幾種詞類，具有多種詞義。所以，在閱讀的過程中，根據(jù)上下文判斷某詞在某篇文章中確切的詞義對文章的理解起著舉止輕重的作用。有時候?qū)υ~義錯誤的判斷會導(dǎo)致對整篇文章的誤解。

“Where Principles Come First”是由外語教學與研究出版社所出版的《新視野大學英語》第三冊第三單元中A部分的課文。在這篇課文中，principle共出現(xiàn)了三次：Where principles come first；The Hyde school operates on the principle that if you teach students the merit of such values as truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern, then academic achievement naturally follows.“We see ourselves as preparing kids for a way of life—— by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles that can affect all kids.”[1]58-59

據(jù)《朗文當代英語辭典》 principle一詞主要有三層意思：MORAL RULE;RULES OF A PROCESS;BELIEF[2] 1120。

細讀下來, 我們發(fā)現(xiàn)文章中的三個principle表達的并不是同一個意思。對于標題中的principle, 可以這樣理解：根據(jù)語法習慣，課文標題應(yīng)為某個句子中用來修飾某個名詞的定語從句。比如，Soldier! You are in the army where principles come first. 翻譯為：戰(zhàn)士，你在 [原則(紀律)當先的]軍營里[3]！由于這篇課文介紹的是海德學校，我們認為where principles come first 修飾的是the Hyde school. 那么在海德學校究竟是原則當先還是道德當先呢？文章的第一句話就回答了這個問題。這句話雖然沒有直接告訴讀者principle在標題中的詞義，但從 “if you teach students the merit of such values as truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern, then academic achievement naturally follows”(下文簡稱A句)這一部分，尤其是 “then academic achievement naturally follows” 我們發(fā)現(xiàn)values就是標題中principles要表達的意思。Principles指代的就是truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern。所以在標題中principle意為moral rule。換句話說，A句對 “Principles Come First”起到了解釋說明的作用。所以文章的標題可翻譯為“品德至上”[1]78。由此，我們也可以得出第三個principle的詞義同樣是moral rule. 那么by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles that can affect all kids這部分可譯為“辦法是倡導(dǎo)一整套能影響所有孩子的價值觀念”[1]78。 而The Hyde school operates on the principle that…中的principle就更好理解了。據(jù)《朗文當代英語辭典》，operate一詞有多種解釋，但對于學校這一組織機構(gòu)，operate一詞的詞義理解為 4 BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION to work in a particular place or way[2]994，顯然接下來的principle意為belief，該部分可譯為“海德中學的辦學宗旨是……?！盵1]78為了讓學生更直觀地理解這三個principle的不同詞義，我們不妨可將這句話改為：The Hyde school operates on the principle that principles come first. 這樣更利于學生理解和區(qū)分principle在這里所表達的兩種詞義。

至此，我們對文章中的三個principle所表達的不同意思有了清楚的了解。通過文章，我們了解到海德學校是一所與眾不同的學校，它的不同在于學校致力倡導(dǎo)“品德至上”的教育理念。不同的人對這一理念持不同的觀點。當海德學校將這個尚有爭議理念在全國范圍的一些學校推廣時，有袖手旁觀的，有反對的，也有支持的。為什么會有這種情況呢？因為提倡這一理念的海德學校，其教學模式與眾不同。海德學校的校長將其教育方式和傳統(tǒng)的教育方式比作汽車和馬車，而馬車無論怎么改，也不可能變成汽車。在海德學校，除了開設(shè)與傳統(tǒng)學校一樣為升入大學做準備的課程外，學生要學要做的還很多，其中，是否努力也是評判學生最終成績的重要因素。同時，家長參與在海德更是不可或缺。此外，這種模式對教師的要求也更高。所以，無論是老師還是學生，在海德學校的收獲都十分顯著。但是在《新視野大學英語讀寫教程3 教師用書》中，對于該篇文章的結(jié)構(gòu)分析卻和文章所表達的內(nèi)容相去甚遠。該結(jié)構(gòu)分析以principles一詞為主線，將文章主要劃分為4個部分，每個部分回答了一個問題：Question1: What are the principles? Question2: Are the Hyde principles accepted by other public schools? Question3: What are the detailed principles or approaches advocated by the Hyde school? Question4: what are the beneficial results of the Hyde School’s principles?[1]62-63現(xiàn)舉第一個問題為例進行說明，首先作者對文章分析：When we first approach the article, we read the title——Where Principles Come First. This naturally brings us the question: What are the principles[1]61? 然后作者對該問題進行了回答：

What are the principles? (以下簡稱B句)

The principles of the Hyde school:

Teach students the merit of such values as truth, courage, integrity…and academic achievement naturally follows(以下簡稱C句).

Prepare kids for a way of life by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles that can affect all kids.[1]62

很明顯，此結(jié)構(gòu)分析在一開始就將principle在文章中的兩個不同詞義混為一談。根據(jù)此結(jié)構(gòu)分析所述，B句中的principles來自于標題，所以應(yīng)理解為moral rule. 那么由此得出的答案應(yīng)如我們上文所解釋的，principles指代的是truth, courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern。而C句并不是對B句的回答，它是意為belief 的principle的內(nèi)容，即海德學校的辦學宗旨。

怎么解決這個問題呢，我們可以將四個問題中principles均改為principle。Question1: What is the principle of the Hyde school? Question2: Is the Hyde principle accepted by other public schools? Question3: What is the detailed principle or approach advocated by the Hyde school? Question4: what are the beneficial results of the Hyde School’s principle? 這樣一來，連接四個問題的主線便成了principle——辦學宗旨一詞，而海德學校的辦學宗旨就是品德至上：The principle of the Hyde school is that principles come first.

綜上所述，認真分析principle一詞對該課文的理解起著舉足輕重的作用。如果分不清principle所表達的不同詞義，很容易造成理解上的差錯。我們認為，在教授學生理解這篇課文時，可以在一開始就讓學生找出文章中的principle，并讓學生思考這三個principle是否表達同一個意思。當然，在實際教學中，學生不一定會給出正確答案，但是我們可以借此機會引起學生的注意，并引導(dǎo)學生正確理解三個principle的詞義，從而起到事半功倍的效果。

In English it is ubiquitous for a word to have multiple senses. Readers always need to work out its exact sense in the context. In the passage “Where Principles Come First”, the word “principle” appears several times and bears different senses. It plays an extremely important role in the understanding of the passage, while the teacher’s book presents a wrong understanding of it.
