A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell. He painted a sign advertising the pups and set about nailing it to a post on the edge of his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the post， he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked down into the eyes of a little boy.

\"Mister，\" he said， \"I want to buy one of your puppies.\"

\"Well，\" said the famer， as he robbed the sweat off the back of his neck， \"these puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money.\"

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket， he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer.

\"I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?\"

\"Sure，\" said the farmer.

And with that he let out a whistle.

\"Here， Dolly!\" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight.

As the dogs made their way to the fence， the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse. Slowly another little ball appeared; this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner the little pup began hobbling toward the other， doing its best in catch up.

\"I want that one，\" the little boy said， pointing to the runt.

The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said， \"Son， you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would.\"

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence， reached down， and began rolling up one leg of his trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe. Looking back up at the farmer， he said， \"You see sir， I don't run too well myself， and he will need someone who understands.\"

Actually our world is full of people who need someone who understands.

一位農(nóng)夫有幾只小狗須要售出。他刷了一個(gè)廣告牌，然后著手把它釘在院子圍欄的一個(gè)樁子上。正當(dāng)他把最后一枚釘子釘入樁子時(shí)，感覺有什么在拽他的工裝褲。他低下頭，看到一個(gè)小孩兒在瞅著他。

“先生，”小男孩說，“我想買一只你的小狗?！?/p>

“嗯……”農(nóng)夫一邊擦他脖子后面的汗水，一邊說，“這些小狗是上等的狗媽媽、狗爸爸生下的，要花不少錢呢?！?/p>

男孩低下頭。過了一會(huì)兒，他把手伸進(jìn)衣袋里，掏出一把零錢，舉給農(nóng)夫?！拔矣?9分。夠不夠看一眼呢?”

“當(dāng)然，”農(nóng)夫說。

農(nóng)夫一聲口哨?！斑^來，多利!”他叫喊道。

從狗屋里經(jīng)過斜坡跑來多利，后面跟著四只絨球一般的小狗。小男孩把臉緊貼在用鏈條連成的柵欄上，眼里跳躍著興奮的光芒。

正當(dāng)狗媽媽和小狗們跑向柵欄時(shí)，小男孩注意到狗屋里還有什么在動(dòng)彈。慢慢地，另外一只小狗出現(xiàn)了；這只顯然比另外幾只小些。它滑下斜坡，然后蹣跚著朝這邊的小狗們追來，樣子看上去有些別扭，但它在努力追趕。

“我要那只狗，”小男孩說，指向那只最小的狗。

農(nóng)夫在小男孩的身邊跪下一條腿，說：

“孩子，你不會(huì)想要那只小狗的。它永遠(yuǎn)無法像其他這些小狗一樣和你跑呀，玩呀。”

聽農(nóng)夫這么說，小男孩離開柵欄，往后退了幾步，然后彎腰卷起一只褲腿，只見他的那條腿兩側(cè)用鋼架支撐著，腳上是一只特制的鞋。男孩抬頭對(duì)農(nóng)夫說：“先生，您瞧，我自己也不能跑得很好，而它需要一個(gè)能理解它的人?！?/p>

事實(shí)上，我們這個(gè)世界充滿了需要被人理解的人。
