Situation: Bill is sat in the office, waiting for Ryan to arrive. Ryan has now been working for the company for six months, and it is time for his performance review. Eventually, Ryan knocks on the door of Bill’s office.

        Bill: Come in!

        Ryan walks in, looking nervous.

Bill: Take a seat. Now, don't look so worried. There's really nothing to be nervous about. All we're going to do today is discuss the work you've done, find out how you've settled in, and evaluate your performance.

Ryan: Okay… can I start by saying how much I've really enjoyed the first few months? I feel like I've settled in really well, and that I've made plenty of friends in the office.

Bill: I'd say the same. A lot of people speak very highly of you, and you do appear to be very popular, particularly among the ladies.

Bill grins, and Ryan laughs nervously.

Bill: But I digress. In short, I’ve been very impressed with your work over the past six months. You're diligent, you're a hard worker, and you're not afraid to speak your mind. I like that in an employee.

Ryan: Thanks, Bill, that means a whole lot.

Bill: You're welcome. I am a little concerned with how late you come in to the office sometimes, though. Work starts at 9, not 9:15 or 9:30.

Ryan: Sorry about that. I'll try getting out of the house quicker, and I'll look for a faster route.

Bill: That's good to hear. And maybe less hangovers would be useful too.

Ryan: Yeah… I'm trying not to go out as much, but my friends are very persuasive. Peer pressure is a horrible thing.

Bill: Yes, it is. You need to remember, though, where your responsibilities are. In all, I'm very happy with you, with your work, and with where you are in the company. I’m also going to give you a 12% pay raise as a reward for successfully passing your probation period. Welcome to the big league, Ryan. You're not the trainee any more. You're a fully-fledged sales executive.

        Ryan: Thanks, Bill!

The two stand, shake hands, and Ryan leaves the office. Later, in the break room, he comes across Susan.

Susan: Hey, Ryan, how did the performance review go?

Ryan: It went well. I passed probation, got a promotion and a decent raise. Now I'm almost making as much as you!

        Susan: Good job! Anything else?

Ryan: Well, yeah… he said that I have to try and get here on time, and not to come in quite so hung-over.

Susan: Well, I agree with him. You DO go out drinking too much, Ryan. Particularly during the work week.

Ryan: Aww, leave off! I'm trying to celebrate, not have a lecture.

Susan: So what do you have planned for tonight? Quiet night in?

Ryan: Nope… I'm off to the pub to toast my promotion!
