When I received this month's movie assignment， I have to confess to not being particularly thrilled. Plain and simple， I'm not a rom-com kinda guy. Tearjerker movies do nothing for me， tales of heartwarming， lovey-dovey sappiness are not my viewing forte – give me bullets， bombs and belly laughs any day of the week.

So despite my protests and vociferous claims that it would be much better if I reviewed， say… Kung Fu Panda， I still got overruled. One of the perils of working in an office where the women outnumber the men. There was no way I was going to get out of this one.， but I figured I couldn't review this movie alone.

So， that evening， I sat down with a renowned expert in the field of romantic movies (aka my girlfriend) to sit through a couple of hours of slush.

The story's fairly simple. Holly (played by Hilary Swank) loves， and is loved by， her husband Gerry (Gerard Butler). But when he dies of a brain tumour aged just 35， her world completely implodes. She becomes a recluse， singing show tunes in her apartment instead of getting on with her life.

So imagine her surprise when， on her 30th birthday， a cake arrives along with a taped message from her late husband. The message is the first in a string of letters and communiqués from Gerry， written before his death and sent to her by means of an ingenious master plan. Each of the letters contains a set of instructions to help Holly come to terms with his death， and move on with her life.

P.S I Love You sets out from the start to paint the characters as (relatively) ordinary folk – a blazing row in their\"tiny\" New York apartment (the fact that it happens to be twice the size of mine doesn't come into consideration here) sets out their life goals and ambitions. Neither of them are high-flying business people， they're not wealthy… for all intents and purposes， they're as everyday as you or I. Apart from the fact that he's dead.

Also， I liked the the way the movie keeps bringing Gerry back in to the story after his death – little visual clues that， when you think about it， are entirely improbable yet still spark flashbacks and memory scenes. You never really get the feeling that Gerry is dead… just sort of waiting offscreen for his next moment of guitar-playing Irishness.

Lastly， the ending. Refreshingly free of genre clichés， the ending really did throw me for a loop. I won't spoil it for you， but it's a heck of a twist.

Sadly， this is about all I can really applaud the film on. A great script is ruined by Hilary Swank's poor performance， though Kathy Bates (as Holly's mother) and Gerard Butler rescue the movie from otherwise-terrible acting. Harry Connick Junior's role， in particularly， seems to be both poorly defined and thrown in at the last minute. He never seems comfortable with his lines or character – something that afflicts many of the co-stars in this movie.

It does tug on the heartstrings， makes you feel sad in all the right places (heck， my hardened romantic-movie expert was sobbing within twenty minutes)， and it's the kind of movie to watch either on a quiet date or a girl's night out. Would I watch it again? No. But if you like tearjerkers， there are a lot worse out there than this.

Denise: You always squeeze it too hard.

John: What is that smell?

Holly: It's me， alright?

Sharon: Hey， hey， hey， don't be like that.

Sharon: Like the only lonely widow in Gotham city.

Holly: I'm just… exhausted.

Denise: Yeah， well， what are you doing， two shows a night?

Patricia: You know， if you want us to leave， that's fine. But you do know that at some point， this all has to stop.

Holly: Alright. Just give me a second， okay? I'll get cleaned up.

Patricia: Okay， troops， let's sweep the area.

Ciara: Yes.

(Sharon polishes Holly’s nails)

Holly: I haven't called the office， are they mad?

Sharon: Nah， there is no rush. Even Larry said， “Take all the time you need. The job is there when you are ready.”

Holly: That was nice of him.

Sharon: He's an asshole.

Holly: He's still an asshole. Do you think it'll be alright if I stop my life right here? Become the Miss Havisham of the Low East Side. Never leave my apartment till I am old. Sit in my wedding dress.

Sharon: Which you never had.

Holly: With an old piece of wedding cake.

Sharon: Which you never had. You gotta be rich to be insane， Hol. Losing your mind is not a luxury for the middle class.

Holly: It's so not fair.

Sharon: No， it's not.

(Ciara walks in)

Ciara: Holly! Something's been delivered for you.

(John opens a box. There is a birthday cake in side with Gerry's signature.)

Holly: What is this? I don't understand. Did you do this?

John: No. Wait a minute.

(John finds a tape attached to the box)

Holly: John， tell me the truth. Did you do this?

John: I did nothing. I swear.

(Holly plays the tape)

The tape: Hey baby， surprise. I know this probably feels a little bit morbid but I just hate the idea that I'm not gonna be there to see you freak out over turning 30. I mean， it kills me not to be there. Heh-heh， that's funny.

Holly: It's not.

The tape: OK， no it's not. You gonna be so impressed. I have a plan， baby. Can you believe it?

I've written you letters. Letters that will be coming to you all sorts of ways. I thought I've waited till your birthday， because I figured you weren't stepping out of the house for a while. Letter number one will be arriving tomorrow. Now， you must do what I say， Okay? Okay? Don't try to figure out how the letters are coming. It's too brilliant and it'll ruin my plan. Just go along with me on this. Because the thing is， I just can't say good-bye yet. So for starters， I want you to get dolled up and just go out and celebrate tonight. Go out with your girlies. I hereby free you from a party with your family， especially your mom. Oh， man， you mom's there， isn't she? Mm， shit. Sorry， Patricia. It isn't that I don't love you， but she needs to get a little crazy. So have a slice of the bloody cake， put on your dress and get out of the apartment. Denise， make a plan.

Denise: I'm on it.

Ciara: I'll help.

The tape: Just leave me with John， okay? And know wherever I am， I'm missing you. Happy birthday. I love you.

Patricia: Well， that makes me sad， because I did. I did.

Holly: Did you hate Gerry because he reminded you of dad?

Patricia: A little. You know the worst thing for a parent， second after losing a child. Watching your child head for the same life as you had and you can't stop it. It's a terrible， helpless feeling. Makes you angry all the time and I've been angry， a very long time. I'm exhausted.

Holly: Do you think we'll ever see dad again?

Patricia: No， sweetheart. Never. So you have to stop waiting.

(Patricia picks out a letter for Holly)

Holly: You?

Patricia: I have to say I was impressed by how he worked everything out ahead of time， every deli every schedule， the mailbox key. Getting that leather jacket out of your apartment wasn't easy with you acting like Miss Havisham. He made me promise， I couldn't say no. I told him I didn't think it was good for you， but I couldn’t say no. It’s the last one， so all alone or not， you gotta walk ahead. Thing to remember is if we're all alone， then we're all together in that too. It helps me sometimes.
