She's spent the last six years as a hostage of the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) guerillas， moved from hideout to hideout in the darkest depths of the Colombian jungle.

But in a daring and unprecedented rescue operation by Colombian armed forces， former Presidential candidate and Senator Ingrid Betancourt was freed on July 2ndand returned to her family in Bogota， the nation's capital.

The military operation， organised by members of Colombia's intelligence services， rescued 15hostages held by FARC， and captured two rebel leaders. Not a single shot was fired during the rescue， which Colombian President Alvaro Uribe described as \"an intelligence operation comparable with the greatest epics of human history， but without a drop of blood being spilled， without one weapon being fired.\"

Ingrid Betancourt Pulecio was born on 25th December， 1961. The Betancourts are one of Colombia's oldest aristocratic families， descended from French immigrants who arrived in Colmbia in the 18th Century. Her father Gabriel was a member of former dictator General Gustavos Pinilla's government， and her mother Yolanda is famous for being a former Miss Colombia contestant and political activist.

Ms. Betancourt's parents divorced in 1975， and Ingrid and her elder sister Astrid went to live in France with their father. In 1983 she married (and later divorced) a French diplomat， Fabrice Delloye， receiving French citizenship as a result， and had two children， Melanie and Lorenzo.

In 1989， a few months after Luis Carlos Galan， the leading anti-drug-trafficking candidate in the 1989 elections was assassinated， Ms. Betancourt decided to return to Colombia in order to become actively involved in national politics. With help and encouragement from her mother (who had been present when Galan died) she managed to get a job working for the Government.

There， she was elected to the Chamber of Representatives in 1994， on an anti-corruption， anti-drug ticket. She then formed her own party， the Green Oxygen Party， and became a senator in 1998. The total number of votes she received was the largest number of any candidate in that year's senate election. During her time in elected office， death threats caused her to send her children from her first marriage to New Zealand， where they could live with her ex-husband.

In 2001， Ms. Betancourt officially announced her intention to run for President of Colombia. After launching her campaign in front of a statue of the national hero Simon Bolivar， she took off on a series of bus trips to impoverished towns and villages across the country. During these trips she attended many community meetings， listened to locals discuss their problems， and came up with ideas to help them. During this trip， she also met up with members of FARC in a de-militarised zone (DMZ) which had been set up for negotiations between the rebels and the government.

In February 2002， the negotiations collapsed and any deal the Government was close to making fell through. The DMZ was revoked， and the army moved in to retake villages occupied by rebel forces. Despite warnings from the Army and the Government， Ms. Betancourt decided to enter the former site of the peace talks and was captured at a FARC checkpoint on February 25th.

During the six years of her captivity several negotiation and prisoner-exchange schemes were proposed， many by France， who had granted Ms. Betancourt citizenship and dual nationality so long ago. All these failed due to the reticence of the rebels to release their prisoners， though the Government also drew criticism for not doing enough to help the hostages. On November 30， 2007the Colombian government released information that they had captured three members of the urban cells of the FARC in Bogotá who had with them videos and letters of people held hostage by the FARC， including Betancourt.

The discovery of these letters led to the formulation of several more rescue plans， one of which partially succeeded when Clara Rojas， Betancourt's friend and aide， and former senator Consuela Gonzalez， were released. After the success of Operation Emmanuel， as the rescue was known， the Army began planning Operation Check – the rescue attempt that would finally free Betancourt.

By deceiving the FARC rebels into thinking the prisoners were being moved， elite troops and intelligence agents flew a disguised helicopter into the base where the hostages were being kept， before spiriting them away from under the Rebel's noses. The helicopter then flew to a nearby airbase and the hostages were put on a plane to Bogota， free at last. Their kidnapping ordeal was over.

Now that Ms. Betancourt is free， many people will be asking one simple question: will she return to politics? Her answer:

\"Do I still dream about serving Colombia? Yes. Ofthe presidency? Only God knows. Right now I just want to feel like another soldier， another Colombian soldier at the service of the motherland. That is my greatest happiness. \"
