        從《浮生六記》譯本看意象的翻譯與傳遞

        [摘要]意象作為一種審美范疇,在文學(xué)翻譯中具有極其重要的作用?;谖膶W(xué)翻譯的本質(zhì)特征即審美性,本文首先回顧總結(jié)了意象的概念,并以接受美學(xué)為理論依據(jù),比較了《浮生六記》三譯本對意象的處理方法,分析歸納了文學(xué)翻譯中意象的處理方法。

        一、引言

        意象是創(chuàng)作者通過感官接觸事物,經(jīng)過加工,創(chuàng)造,從生活真實(shí)升華到藝術(shù)真實(shí)的形象。在文學(xué)翻譯實(shí)踐上,尤其是意象的傳譯上,譯者應(yīng)該注意保留原作中的空白與不定點(diǎn),盡量給譯文讀者豐富的想象空間,讓讀者自己去探索,去發(fā)掘,去體會原文的言外之意,象外之象,獲得閱讀的愉悅,從而最大限度地實(shí)現(xiàn)原文審美屬性。具體到翻譯實(shí)踐上,筆者認(rèn)為,對于原作中的意象傳譯,譯者一般會采取直譯,變譯,省譯等策略,但是無論譯者采取何種策略,都應(yīng)盡力保持原作品中意象的生動、形象的特點(diǎn),最大限度地實(shí)現(xiàn)其審美價(jià)值。

        二、《浮生六記》中的意象傳譯

        《浮生六記》是清朝文人沈復(fù)所著的一部自傳體文言散文。該書原有六記,故所謂“六記”,不幸后兩部流失,尚存前四記,即閨房記樂,閑情記趣,坎坷記愁與浪游記快。全書筆調(diào)優(yōu)雅,簡潔生動,描述了作者生活的方方面面,包括他的愛情婚姻生活,人生經(jīng)歷,家庭變故,閑情逸趣,以及山水游記等。字里行間流露出一代文人的獨(dú)特人生態(tài)度,價(jià)值觀念,性格氣質(zhì),生活藝術(shù),文評藝評和美學(xué)情趣,具有很高的思想價(jià)值和藝術(shù)品位。俞平伯先生將浮生六記譽(yù)為“一塊純美的水晶,只見明瑩,不見襯露的明瑩的顏色;只見精微,不見制作精微的痕跡。”該書除了被翻譯成英語外,還先后被翻譯成日文,德文,法文,意大利文和捷克文等。作為一部優(yōu)秀的文學(xué)名著,沈復(fù)筆下的《浮生六記》充滿了生動、豐富的意象。

        目前,《浮生六記》有三個(gè)英譯本。分別為林語堂譯本(以下簡稱譯者一),Shirley M. Black譯本(以下簡稱譯者二)和 Leonard Pratt與 Chiang Su-bui合作翻譯的譯本(以下簡稱譯者三)。本文將以原作中描繪的意象為研究對象,通過比較分析三個(gè)譯本對其的處理策略,進(jìn)而探討文學(xué)作品中意象的翻譯問題,基于此,筆者希望能夠?yàn)槲膶W(xué)翻譯中的意象傳譯提供某些參考與借鑒。

        1.在文學(xué)翻譯中,有些意象可以進(jìn)行直接移植,不做變動,保持原作的風(fēng)貌。這種情況當(dāng)然是最理想的,也是譯者最愿意看到。但是其前提是,此類意象能夠?yàn)橹形鞣阶x者理解與欣賞。

        【例如】是夜月色頗佳,俯視河中,波光如練,輕羅小扇,并坐水窗,仰見飛云過天,變態(tài)萬狀。譯者一:That night, the moon was shining beautifully and when I looked down at the creek, the ripples shone like silvery chains. We were wearing light silk dresses and sitting together with a small fan in our hands, before the window overlooking the creek. Looking up at the sky, we saw the cloudssailing through the heavens, changing at every moment into a myriad forms,…譯者二:Brilliant moonlight had silvered the quiet garden as I watched the shining satin ripples of the stream. The night was very hot. We were sitting before the water-window, dressed in light silk gowns, fanning ourselves languidly with little gauze fans, looking first at the water below us, then at the ever-changing shapes of the scudding cloudsin the skies overhead. 譯者三:That night the moonlight was very lovely, and as it was reflected in the streamit turned the ripples of the water as white as silk. We sat together near the water wearing light robes and fanned ourselves gently as we looked up at the clouds flying across the skyand changing into ten thousand shapes.

        此處,沈復(fù)記敘了他與妻子七夕夜欣賞夜色的情景。作者筆調(diào)清雅,通過“月色”,“波光”,“飛云”等意象,勾勒了一幅美麗、寧靜、皎潔的夜色圖畫。對于這些自然景觀,中外讀者都有類似的經(jīng)歷,完全可以直接移植。我們看到,三位譯者雖然措辭有所不同,但都較好地再現(xiàn)了原文中的意象。

        2.由于中西方在文化、認(rèn)知和審美上存在著差異,有些意象若是從漢語中直接移植到英語中,有時(shí)候不能實(shí)現(xiàn)其應(yīng)有的審美價(jià)值,這時(shí)候,就要求譯者在傳譯時(shí)采取些補(bǔ)救措施,如補(bǔ)譯,為譯文讀者的理解、欣賞提供一些提示,努力幫助譯文讀者構(gòu)建與原文中相似的意象,盡量再現(xiàn)原文意象的審美功能。

        【例如】但李詩宛如姑射仙子,有一種落花流水之趣,令人可愛。譯者一:“…but Li Po’s poems have the wayward charm of a nymph. His lines come naturally like dropping petals and flowing waters, and are so much lovelier for their spontaneity.”譯者二:“…but Li’s poems have the lyric charm of fairy maidens. He seems to write as naturally as petals fall and waters flow. That is why I love him.”譯者三::“But Li Pai’s poetry flows like a flower tossed into a stream. It’s enchanting.”

        在漢語中,“落花流水”一般用來指暮春景色衰敗,而在此處,用來形容李白詩句的自然、灑脫、清新流暢的氣概。如果直接移植,如譯者三直譯為“flows like a flower tossed into a stream”,勢必會讓譯文讀者迷惑難解,因而無法再現(xiàn)這一意象的審美價(jià)值;而另兩位譯者分別采取了一定的補(bǔ)譯措施,尤其是譯者一增添了“naturally”和 “spontaneity”兩詞,為這一意象在譯文中被接受與欣賞做了較好地鋪墊。

        3.有時(shí)候,由于兩種語言在文化和審美上的差異,原文中的意象無法在譯文中再現(xiàn)或傳遞。這時(shí)候,出于對文學(xué)作品的審美屬性的考慮,譯者常常會使用一些相近的或類似的意象進(jìn)行替代。雖然這種策略是不得已而為之,但是在某種程度上還是部分實(shí)現(xiàn)了原作的審美價(jià)值。

        【例如】蕓回眸微笑,便覺一縷情絲搖人魂魄;擁之入帳,不知東方之既白。譯者一:Yun looked back at me with a smile and our souls were carried away in a mist of passion. Then we went to bed, when all too soon the dawn came. 譯者二: Yuen’s eyes smiled into mine, and in that moment our souls were closely bound with the silken strands of love; our quivering bodies knew the intensity of desire. So, at last, I led her to the bed, nor were we aware when dawn began to whiten the horizon.譯者三:She answered with a bewitching smile that made me feel a love so endless it shook my soul. I held her close as I parted the curtains and led her into bed. We never noticed what time the sun rose in the morning.

        在漢語中,“一縷情絲”用以比喻男女間相互愛悅的感情牽連。原文作者以這一意象來表他與妻子間的相互愛慕之情。三個(gè)譯本中,譯者一以“a mist of passion”;譯者二基本是照直移植,而且進(jìn)行了過渡的具體化,如文中“our quivering bodies knew the intensity of desire”之句;而譯者三翻譯時(shí)放棄了這一意象。由于中西方在認(rèn)知上的差異,若是直接翻譯,當(dāng)然難以被接受;而譯者一創(chuàng)造性使用類似的意象來替代,在很多程度上補(bǔ)救了譯文的審美價(jià)值。

        4.有些意象,由于深深根植于漢語文化,既不能直譯,又不易在譯入語中找到對應(yīng)的意象來替代,具有很強(qiáng)的抗譯性。在翻譯實(shí)踐中,不得不完全舍棄原文所表現(xiàn)的意象,只能翻譯它所代表的意義。

        【例如】一燈如豆,羅帳低垂,弓影杯蛇,驚神未定。譯者一:The light of a rapeseed oil lamp was then burning as small as a pea, and the edges of the bed curtain hung low in the twilight,and we were shaking all over.譯者二: …where the gauze curtains hung motionless and the lamp-flame had shrunk to the size of a pea. Like the frightened man in the old story,‘seeing the bow’s reflection as a snake’s shadow in wine-cup’, I nervously raised the lamp-wick and crept behind the curtains of the bed. 譯者三:The flame in the lamp was as small as a bean, and the curtains around the bed cast shadows that writhed like snakes. We were still frightened.

        在此作者運(yùn)用了幾個(gè)意象,描繪了一幅驚魂未定的場面。其中,“弓影杯蛇”源自典故,對于熟悉本族文化的中國讀者,意象生動,意義不言自明。而要把這一具有獨(dú)特文化的意象傳遞到譯入語中,實(shí)現(xiàn)其審美功能,確實(shí)無法做到。因此,譯者一完全舍棄了這一意象。雖然譯者二通過文內(nèi)闡釋的形式,企圖移植這一意象,但是這一做法,無形中破壞了原文的連貫性;譯者三結(jié)合語境,對這一意象做出了創(chuàng)造性的翻譯,但是并沒有取得較好的效果。
