What do you want to be when you are older? Students have different views (觀點(diǎn)) on what their dream jobs could be. But whatever they want to be when they are older, students in Nanjing No. 4 Middle School have to be ladies and gentlemen now. This month, the school started a programme to turn girls into ladies and boys into gentlemen. The words “l(fā)adies” and “gentlemen” mean women and men who are polite to other people. In the past, it also meant a person who came from a good family. So can a school turn 3,000 girls and boys into ladies and gentlemen?

Mr Wang, a teacher at the school, wants his students to learn how to behave (表現(xiàn)) well. “We want our students to be kind, polite and graceful(優(yōu)雅的),” he said.

One important part of the schools programme is polite language. “Language is the first step to be a polite person. Ladies and gentlemen never say dirty words,” said Wang. A study of 100 students at the school found that half of them sometimes used dirty words. Also, all students must wear uniform. The school chooses two well- behaved students in each class to set a good example.

“We also plan to have lessons in manners(禮儀) next term,” said Wang. Most students say they want to be ladies and gentlemen.

“A gentleman should be kind and polite,” said a junior 2 student at the school. Another junior 2 student thinks she is just like a lady. “Its important for a girl to smile at people and say ‘thank you with all her heart,” she said.

The Vans in America(美國的房車)

Americans with small families own a small car or a large one. If both parents are working, they usually have two cars. When the family is large, one of the cars is sold and they will buy a van(住房汽車).

A small car can hold four persons and a large car can hold six persons but it is very crowded. A van holds seven persons easily, so a family with three children can ask their grandparents to travel together.

Mr King and his wife had a third child last year. This made them sell a second car and buy a van. There are seven seats in the van, and two of them are used to put things on, for a family of five must carry many suitcases when they travel. When they arrive at their grandparents home, the suitcases are put into the two seats. And then they can carry their grandparents.

Americans call vans motor home. A motor home is always used for holidays. When a family are traveling to the mountains or to the seaside, they can live in their motor home for a few days or weeks. All the members of a big family can enjoy a happier life when they are traveling together. That is why motor homes have become very popular. In America there are many parks for motor homes.
