在教學(xué)中，我們會經(jīng)常遇到類似It’s essental to book in advance和She is not easy for us to dealwith這種常有“…adj. (…) +to V.”形式結(jié)構(gòu)的句子，且用法相當(dāng)普遍。如果我們認(rèn)真分析一下，就不難發(fā)現(xiàn)在這一結(jié)構(gòu)形式中，to V和adj的作用并不完全相同。我們從下面幾個方面探討這一結(jié)構(gòu)的具體用法。

一、用在It is(was) /It must be/It seems + to V.結(jié)構(gòu)中，這種結(jié)構(gòu)中的adj.應(yīng)為表示重要性、緊迫性、可能性、用處/益處、正常性、頻繁性、適宜性以及表示感情反應(yīng)變化的形容詞

例如：(1) It is important to learn English.

(2) It is easy to teach Mary.

(3) It must be hard to climb the mountain.

(4) It is nasty to drink dirty water.

從上面例句中我們可以看出，it僅為形式主語，to learn English， to teach Mary， to climb the mountain， to drink dirty water，分別是句中的真正主語，而形容詞important，easy， hard， nasty又同前面的系動詞一起構(gòu)成句中的復(fù)合謂語。

二、用在說明主語的情緒和愿望的形容詞adj. + to V.結(jié)構(gòu)中，to V.作“be + adj.”的賓語

例如：(1) We are ready to make the attempt.

(2) We were sorry not to be there.

(3) He is anxious to see her.

(4) I’m determined to finish the work tonight.

三、用在表示主語意愿、能力、可能性等的形容詞adj. +to V.結(jié)構(gòu)中，to V.用作adj.的補(bǔ)語，同時又和adj.一起構(gòu)成句子的謂語。

例如：(1) He was very reluctant to help.

(2) Jenny is able to do it on her own.

(3) I’m inclined to get tired easily.

(4) Julian is liable to shout when angry.

以上四句中的to V，即to help， to do it on her own， to get tired easily及 to shout when angry，補(bǔ)充其相應(yīng)的形容詞reluctant， able， inclined， liable，并同它們一起構(gòu)成句子的謂語。

四、用在以-ed形式出現(xiàn)的形容詞adj. + to V.結(jié)構(gòu)中這些以-ed形式出現(xiàn)的形容詞說明句中主語對事件的反應(yīng)，并同句中系動詞一起充當(dāng)句子復(fù)合謂語

To V.用作句子的狀語，表示時間、原因、條件等。這時to V.短語可以被其相應(yīng)的狀語從句所替代。

例如：(1) They must be disappointed to find him out.

(2) John was very pleased to be given the job.

(3) I was surprised to see how angry he was.

這三句中的to find him out， to be given the job及to see how angry th was都是用作句中的狀語。它們分別理解為：

(1) They must be disappointed if they find him out.

(2) John was very pleased because/when he was given the job.

(3) I was surprised as I saw how angry he was.

再來看看這些狀語從句的to V所表示的動作與主句中謂語所表示的動作的時間的關(guān)系。第（1）句條件狀語從句中to V所表示的動作與主句中謂語所表示的動作是指將來可能發(fā)生的動作，對未來可能產(chǎn)生的情緒作一推測，因而這兩個動作幾乎同時發(fā)生；第（2）句原因狀語從句中to V所表示的動作與主句謂語所表示的動作幾乎同時發(fā)生或者可以說發(fā)生在它之前；第（3）句時間狀語從句中to V所表示的動作與主句中謂語所表示的動作幾乎同時發(fā)生。

五、用在adj. + enough +to V和too + adj. + to V結(jié)構(gòu)中，其中adj.說明句子主語的特性、特點(diǎn)，和系動詞一起充當(dāng)句子復(fù)合謂語，to V為表示結(jié)果或程度的狀語，可以用so(…) that引導(dǎo)的結(jié)果/程度狀語替代

例如：(1) Is the water warm enough to swim in?

(2) He was lucky enough to win the prize.

(3) I’m too old to kick up my heels.

上面三句中的warm， lucky， old說明其主語water，he及I的特性或特點(diǎn)，分別與is， was， am一起充當(dāng)句子的復(fù)合謂語；而to swim， to win the prize及to kick up my heels分別作句中的狀語，表示結(jié)果或程度，這三句可能用英語解釋為：

(1) Is the water warm enough so that Ican swim in?

(2) He was so lucky that he won the prize.

(3) I’m so old that I can’t kick up my heels.

六、用在so+adj. + as + to V結(jié)構(gòu)中，其中adj.說明主語的特性，to V為表結(jié)果的狀語

例如：The rain was so heavy as to make our picnic impossible.

這句話可以理解為：

The rain was so heavy that it was impossible to picnic.

但應(yīng)注意：so kind as to這個套語有時用來請求別人做革件事情。例如：Would you be so kind as to open the door for me?

七、其它情況

1.adj.用來對to V所表示的動作起論斷作用，句子的主語是to V的邏輯賓語。例如：

(1) Relativity theory isn’t easy to understand.

(2) The text is terribly interesting to learn.

(3)The garden is not bad to play in.

以上三句中的theory， the text， the garden是句中to V，即to understand， to learn， to play in的邏輯賓語，形容詞easy， interesting和bad對這些to V所表示的動作起論斷作用。這些情況下的to V.不能省略。

2.adj.不是用來對to V所表示的動作起論斷作用，而是用來說明句子主語的特征。例如：

(1) The dish is delicious ti taste.

(2) The paper is smooth ti touch.

(3) The box is heavy to carry.

這三句中的主語the dish， the paper， the box分別是句中to V，即to taste， to touch， to carry的邏輯賓語，面形容詞delicious， smooth，herry不再是對句中起論斷作用，而是表示句子主語的特征了。

“…adj. (…) +to V.”結(jié)構(gòu)形式中的to V.和adj的作用還有很多，本文只是從個人教學(xué)實(shí)踐中，對其進(jìn)行簡要?dú)w納和淺析。
