Lily: Oh my god， oh my god， are you alright? Is it another one? Do you want me to hold your hand? What do you need me to do?

Sabrina: Oooooowww!

James: Oh god， I…I'll go get some more water for you! (runs out into the hallway)

Lily: Wait， James， don't go!

Sabrina: Ooooh， it's gone. Jeez， Lily， way to go making me feel like a bomb about to go off.

Lily: I'm sorry! I don't know how to deal with this. And I know how totally selfish I'm sounding， because you're the one about to push something the size of a watermelon out of a hole the size of a pea…

Sabrina: Please! I don't need reminding!

Lily: Sorry!! What I mean is， I definitely want to be here for you， Sab， even though I'm probably going to be the worst person for this sort of thing and you'll hate me at the end of it…

Sabrina: (gently) No， I won't.

Lily: Well， just tell me what you need me to do， okay? In between screaming blue murder every time a contraction comes on， I mean.

(The two girls giggle as James pokes his head cautiously through the doorway)

James: Is it all clear?

Lily: (bossily) Stop talking like it's some sort of crime scene and get in here. Did you bring the water or did you just go curl up in the hallway?

James: I brought it， I brought it! So…h(huán)ow much longer is this part going to be， you think?

Sabrina: Well， I'm only a couple of centimetres dilated， and my contractions are still pretty far apart， so I think it's going to be a while yet. You know， you're not in any way obliged to stay， James， although I really do appreciate you coming.

Lily: Of course he'll stay! Right?

James: Yes， definitely， there's no way I'm leaving you now Sabrina. I want to be part of this…only if you don't mind， of course.

Sabrina: I don't mind at all， as long as you don't mind the…Ooof!! Here comes another one!!

Lily: Oh god， I hate this part.

(The two hold Sabrina's hands as she goes through another painful contraction.)

Lily: (wiping Sabrina's brow) You know， I really can't believe that Paul isn't here.

Sabrina: (quickly) He's busy with work.

Lily: Yeah， great excuse. This just happens to be the birth of this first， and perhaps only， child!Don't tell me he couldn't explain the situation at work and take the day off. What kind of company denies someone the right to be present at the birth of their child? Aren't Western guys supposed to be more enlightened about that sort of thing?

(Sabrina falls silent as Lily continues her tirade.)

Lily: I seriously think you should reconsider your relationship with him， Sab. He's not good enough for you.

James: Come on， Lily， this isn't the time or place to be talking about this. This should be a happy day! Let's help Sabrina get through this and make it a positive experience， huh?

Sabrina: (quietly) Thanks， James.

Lily: Humph. Well， I still stand by what I said.

James: Of course， nobody's saying you're right or wrong， but let's celebrate this moment for what it is. Sabrina's about to have a baby! This should be something we all have great memories about for the rest of our lives!

Lily: Geez， your perma-smile， blindingly positive thing is really creeping me out， James.

(Some time later， Sabrina has finally entered the delivery room， alone. Lily waits on a bench in the waiting room while James paces frantically around her.)

James: God， I know childbirth is supposed to be painful…I was made to watch one of those horrifying birth videos during sex ed， you know the kind I'm talking about? Completely traumatized me and put me off the idea of sex， frankly， although that was probably the intention…anyway， I guess nothing really prepares you for the real thing， because I'll be honest， I was terrified in there while she was having her contractions.

Lily: So why didn't you just leave? You didn't have to stay， you know.

James: Of course I wouldn't leave! What kind of person do you think I am?

Lily: Well， frankly， I was surprised that you came in the first place. It's not really anything to do with you， is it? This baby she's having isn't yours.

James: I know， but…I just want to be a good friend， you know， be there for her. And I thought she might want a few extra people around， in case…I don't know.

Lily: Seriously， James， if it came to it， would you be willing to look after another man's child?

James: Well…I couldn't honestly say until I was put in that situation， but…if you're talking about Sabrina and her baby， yes. I love Sabrina. I would give anything for her to love me back. But unfortunately I think she's leaning towards Paul right now. So I'm just going to take a step back， and be there for her if and when she needs me. That's the way the cookie crumbles.

Lily: (sighing) Well， you're quite the martyr， James.

Part Two: Sabrina Makes a Decision 重大決定

（Lily和James在產(chǎn)房外焦急地等待，突然，幾個(gè)護(hù)士慌張地從產(chǎn)房跑出來(lái)。）

Lily: What? What's going on? Why are the nurses running around?

James: (grabbing one of the nurses by the arm) Please， what's going on?

Nurse 1: She's losing a lot of blood. We're going to get some blood for a transfusion.

James: That can't be good.

Lily: Oh my god， what do we do?

Nurse 2: Just stay calm， please， we can't have you running into the delivery room now.

Lily: James， what do we do?!

James: I don't know! There isn't much we can do， is there?

Lily: Oh， for god's sake!

(Lily pulls out her cell phone.)

James: Wait， what are you doing?

Lily: I'm calling Paul! Sabrina and the baby might be in danger， he should be here!

James: You can't use that thing inside the hospital， the last thing we want is for the machinery in that room to get messed up!

Lily: Ssssh!! It's ringing! Shit， he's not picking up.

James: Try it again， maybe it's in his pocket and he can't hear it.

Lily: Hang on， it's connecting to the answering machine service. Paul! It's Lily. Get over to the hospital as soon as you get this message， we've just been told that Sabrina's losing blood!

James: Great， now he's going to panic and rush and get hit by a car or something.

Lily: Whatever. It would serve him right.

(Suddenly， they hear a baby cry.)

Lily: Oh my god， is that coming from…is that…

James: I think it is! I think the baby's been born!

(One of the nurses walks out， smiling.)

Nurse: Congratulations! Your friend has had a beautiful baby boy!

(Lily and James are both speechless for a moment.)

Lily: Yaaaaaaaaayy!!! A boy!!!

James: Is Sabrina all right?

Nurse: She's bled a lot， and she's very tired， but she'll be fine. We're going to clean them up and then transfer them into the ward， where you'll be able to see them. We'll keep her in for a night or two for observation， but she should be up and about soon enough.

Lily: I don't think I would be getting up for months after something like that!

(Later， Lily and James visit Sabrina in the ward.)

Lily: Sabrina! Congratulations!!

Sabrina: Lily! James!!

Lily: Oh my god， is that him?!

James: He's gorgeous， Sabrina. We're so proud of you， you were amazing.

(The three embrace in a group hug.)

Sabrina: Thanks. And thank you guys so much for being here， I really couldn't have done it on my own.

Lily: I can't believe how teeny he is! He's perfect!

Sabrina: (laughing)You think so? I think he looks like a little raisin， personally.

Lily: No way! He's beautiful.

Sabrina: Well， you should have seen him when he first came out， he was all purple and covered in…

Lily: Hellooo， don't need to know the ugly parts! Want to believe that it's all like in the movies， where the babies come out pink and bouncy and perfect!

Sabrina: Hah! Just wait 'til you go through this， you'll see.

James: I'm sorry we weren't in there with you the whole way – some of the nurses came out at one point and said you were losing a lot of blood…h(huán)ow are you feeling?

Lily: Yeah， you look a little pale – lay back a little， you must be exhausted.

Sabrina: Exhausted would be right! I've never felt so spent in my entire life.

Lily: Are you still in any pain?

Sabrina: Nah， I just feel like I could sleep for a million years…h(huán)aven't tried my first feeding yet though， waiting for the lactation nurse to come in…

(A while later， the baby has been fed and moved to the nursery. As Lily and James prepare to leave， Paul rushes into the ward， carrying a ludicrously large bouquet of flowers.)

Sabrina: Paul!

Paul: I just got the message! Is everything alright? How are you? Where's the baby?!

Lily: Hah! (pushing herself in between Paul and Sabrina) I can't believe you have the gall to arrive now， as if bringing an insane bunch of flowers is going to make up for the fact that you weren't here for the birth of your first child! What， you think you were going to get off that easy?\"Where's the baby\" my ass! How do you think you'd feel if you'd just pushed something the size of a watermelon out of your doo-dah and you lost PINTS and PINTS of blood， and the FATHER OF YOUR CHILD wasn't even here to hold your hand through it all?

Paul: (stammering) I-I-I'm so sorry， I…work was just…I thought I could quickly tie up a few loose ends and get over here in time to…

(Paul looks beseechingly at James.)

James: Sorry， man. I think it was bad form too. You didn't even pick up the damn phone when Lily called you earlier.

Paul: I didn't hear it ring…It'd been sitting on my desk and I must have been away from it at the time…

Lily: If you cared at all about Sabrina and the baby， you should have had that phone stapled to your hand! It's the least you could have done， seeing as you blatantly weren't planning on being here!

Sabrina: Guys， guys， come on. It's okay.

Paul: (taking Sabrina's hand) Sabrina， I'm so sorry…if I've made you feel neglected， or if I haven't been supporting you…I should have been here…

Sabrina: (gently removing Paul's hand) No， no， not at all. Honestly Paul， I'm really happy with the way things went. It was a pretty standard labour， and the baby came out fine. He has all of his fingers and toes. He's just been moved to the nursery for the night. You can see him later.

Paul: But all this about the blood…h(huán)ow are you feeling?

Sabrina: I'm fine， really， just tired. Listen， Paul， you don't have to feel bad about anything at all.The baby and I are fine， and we can take care of ourselves. I wasn't sure if I could do it by myself before， but now I've been through the birth I feel like I can do anything. You should concentrate on your work right now， and come and visit the baby when you have the time.

Paul: Sabrina…

Lily: (to James) You know what that means – she's dropped him! This is when you should swoop in and sweep her off her feet!

【Language Focus / 語(yǔ)言點(diǎn)】

1. In between screaming blue murder every time a contraction comes on…

“scream blue murder”是常用口語(yǔ)，意思是“大聲地喊叫或者大聲地抱怨”。

2. …did you just go curl up in the hallway?

“curl up”是個(gè)習(xí)慣用語(yǔ)，指的是把頭埋入膝蓋間的動(dòng)作。對(duì)話中是Lily拿James開(kāi)玩笑，因?yàn)镴ames對(duì)Sabrina生產(chǎn)的事情一直都表現(xiàn)的憂慮重重。

名詞，“膽汁”的意思。對(duì)話中指代膽量。

“脫身、擺脫”的意思。
