In the drama that is American national politics， the pro-choice versus pro-life debate is a major player. It is one of the key issues over which liberals and conservatives clash; it is a matter of principle that more often than not divides Democrats from Republicans. That is perhaps what makes Juno so interesting， because it delves into a less-discussed component of the debate: adoption.

Juno MacGuff is your typical American teenager， the kind that veers toward the tomboyish – she plays guitar， enjoys cracking inappropriate jokes and has a fondness for gory horror movies. She's smart and witty， at times seeming older than her years. At 16， she gets pregnant， but not in the way a girl who messes around with the football captain under the school bleachers would; rather， as the result of an experiment between two longtime friends who try having sex one day out of \"boredom\".

As is no surprise with a first sexual experience， the experiment goes awry and Juno gets pregnant. Her first impulse is to get an abortion， and she goes as far as her local woman's clinic to see it through， but the thought that her baby might already have fingernails stops her in the waiting room. Instead she chooses to give her baby up for adoption， and from there we are taken through the course of a teenage pregnancy， the process of giving a child away， and how to get back to life afterwards.

Rarely do happy endings result from teenage pregnancy. In fact， it is probably a parent's worst nightmare， so the ease with which the characters in the film navigate through it seems somewhat implausible. Juno's situation is unique in that she has the support of her family， is able to find a promising couple who will adopt the child and can help her with the financial burden of the pregnancy， and has in the father of her baby a supportive – albeit passive – best friend with whom she remains close throughout the film.

Having a plot that unfolds as such， it is easy to see why pro-choice supporters would have qualms with Juno's depiction of teenage pregnancy. The poise with which she holds herself， the confidence she maintains throughout and the high note the movie ends upon seems to paint the picture of an idealistic alternative to abortion that pro-lifers would jump to endorse. The physical difficulties of pregnancy are gently highlighted， and only in passing does the film address the humiliation and discrimination Juno might feel， not just as a single mother-to-be but also as a 16-year-old girl who is still attending high school and continuing to encounter her peers (and their parents) on a daily basis. The only moment in the movie at which Juno is seen breaking down emotionally is when she finds out the seemingly happy couple who are to adopt her baby decide to divorce before the baby is born.

But though it may be that abortion becomes an unavoidable topic in the discussion of teenage pregnancy， it is far from the focus of the film. Rather， instead of attempting to tackle the American abortion debate， what Juno aims to do is unravel the notion of the nuclear family and question its place in the scheme of present-day family dynamics. This deconstruction is not only relevant in Juno's own situation， with an out-of-wedlock pregnancy compounded by her also giving up the child， but is a theme that runs throughout many of the characters' relationships. Juno's parents， for instance， are far from what most would consider ideal: Juno's mother abandons her at a young age and she is raised by her father， who is remarried to a step-mother that is not evil， as first impulse and genre convention might suggest; she is in fact extremely supportive and gets along well with her step-daughter.

When the less than perfect but successful relationship of Juno's father and stepmother is juxtaposed against Mark and Vanessa Loring， the adopted parents-to-be， the existence of the prototypical family is placed even further in doubt. From the outside， the Lorings appear happy and content， with all the elements of a successful relationship working in their favor， and it seems that all they need is a baby to complete the picture. But when the possibility of adopting Juno's baby arises， the couple discovers that a child is not enough to hold their relationship together and their marriage subsequently dissolves.

Thus， if a young and successful couple with the perfect home and environment to raise a child in can't do it， then who can? The answer Juno offers is， perhaps， that it doesn't take a team consisting of a male and female to raise a child， as Vanessa demonstrates at the end of the film by adopting Juno's baby in spite of her divorce from Mark. Or that those who produce offspring， as we see in Juno's own situation and the circumstances of her parents， may not always be best suited to raise them.

What becomes apparent by the end of the film is that the construct of the modern family is no longer bound to the conventional and simplistic structure of mother， father and child. The definition of a normal family is obsolete because human relationships have evolved to a point where normalcy is obscured， so much so that whether we come from a functional or dysfunctional family matters not because the functional family no longer exists. We are all part of dysfunctional relationships， which is the reason we are so comforted by Juno's exceptional but positive outcome， why we find Juno's parents' cynical sarcasm so endearing， and why we sympathize with Vanessa and are happy when she achieves motherhood regardless of the means.

Juno confronts some of America's deepest taboos – abortion， premarital sex， teenage pregnancy， having a child out of wedlock – yet remains delightfully humorous， playful and rich with insight into what makes a family in the 21st century. And if anything， whether we are pro-choice， pro-life， a little bit of both or don't care， Juno is a film which reassures us that in our distorted lives， we are not alone.

Mark: Let's talk about how we're gonna do this…thing.

Juno: What do you mean? Well， don't I just have the thing? Squeeze it on out and hand it over?

Gerta: It means they send annual updates， photos， let Juno know how the baby is doing as he or she grows up.
