期盼與召喚
在中國東部沿海重要港口城市寧波,集合著、活躍著一群熱心鄉(xiāng)邦文化事業(yè)的志同道合者,這些學(xué)者、專家、儒商、公務(wù)員和民間人士,關(guān)注時代風(fēng)云和世界潮流,傳承“寧波幫”愛國愛鄉(xiāng)、團結(jié)務(wù)實、開拓創(chuàng)新,以天下為己任的精神,關(guān)注著世界各地的“寧波幫”英才,關(guān)注著“寧波幫”在國外所創(chuàng)造的輝煌業(yè)績。當(dāng)2002年美國“9·11”周年祭到來的那一天,他們通過電視,看到了在紐約世貿(mào)大廈廢墟舉行的紀(jì)念儀式上馬友友深情演奏莫扎特《安魂曲》的那一刻,看到美國總統(tǒng)布什夫婦肅立在他身邊之時,這使寧波的鄉(xiāng)親們心靈震顫了,更讓一群熱心鄉(xiāng)邦文化的志同道合者為鄉(xiāng)親馬友友在世界音樂界享有的盛名激動萬分!
就從那時起,他們發(fā)起一次次探訪馬氏故里的志愿者行動,并將所得資料匯編成冊,題名《月是故鄉(xiāng)明》的特殊家書,通過美國加州的華人僑領(lǐng)、著名寧波幫人士李名信帶往大洋彼岸,問候當(dāng)今世界第一大提琴家,給他捎去“傳語遠游人,歸期定也未?”的問候語。
不久,馬友友在回信中欣然允諾:“希望有一天能實現(xiàn)訪問寧波?!?2005年初,馬友友赴甬演出的項目正式啟動,友友在亞太地區(qū)的代理人和美國經(jīng)紀(jì)公司代表,先后來甬進行實地考察,他們對寧波大劇院的設(shè)施甚為滿意,終于敲定了相關(guān)事宜。
然而這位在法國出生、美國長大的大師級人物,全世界都是他的家,故鄉(xiāng)寧波在他心目中究竟占有多少分量?關(guān)于故鄉(xiāng),關(guān)于這場音樂會,直到11月上旬人們都沒有獲得友友本人的片言只語。然而就在人們熱切的期盼中,大洋彼岸傳來振奮人心的消息,11月7日《參考消息》載美聯(lián)社電訊:“享譽全球的旅美華裔大提琴家馬友友,在結(jié)束臺灣桃園和臺北的演奏會后,將重返中國大陸,到寧波展開一場生命的尋根之旅?!?/p>
見面禮和見面會
11月10日午后,港龍航班飛抵寧波櫟社國際機場,翹首以待的歡迎人群盼來了身著深色西服、臉帶親切微笑的馬友友。
雖然是第一次踏上故鄉(xiāng)寧波的土地,他卻步履輕盈,手捧鮮花,不停地向大家招手致意,毫無漂泊海外游子對故鄉(xiāng)的陌生之感。下午2時許,友友下榻南苑飯店。在征得他本人欣然同意后,家鄉(xiāng)父老在第一時間向友友贈送見面禮?!皩幉ㄊ袣g迎馬友友返鄉(xiāng)獻藝籌委會”會長鮑正梁帶著三件不尋常的禮物,跨進了2002號總統(tǒng)套房:
第一件禮物是盛裝在沉甸甸水晶瓶里的“故土”。這是采自馬家祖屋地下的一撮泥土,友友接過“故土”,雙手緊抱在胸前,連聲贊嘆:“哇——真是不可思議!”對于一個情感豐富的藝術(shù)家,懷揣故土,心中免不了百感交集。
第二件禮物是一本精心設(shè)計制作、圖文并茂的畫冊《故里風(fēng)光》。翻開來,友友看到了夢幻中的故里風(fēng)光、老家祖屋和青山上的祖宗墳塋,還有發(fā)了黃的老照片和蘊含其中的動人故事。最后一頁,則是中國家族史上的重要符號:如樹枝般伸展蔓延的宗族譜系圖。友友面對眾多的馬氏族人,他看到了自家的名字和他兒女的名字赫然其中,看到了家族之源、宗譜之根,不禁心潮起伏,激動不已,他再次驚呼“不可思議”!
第三件禮物被封裝在一個精致的禮品盒內(nèi),幾個人展開之后,鮑正梁說這是一幅具有民族傳統(tǒng)的“壽幛”,那是特地為友友五十壽辰而制的:在一幅長2米、寬1.45米的大紅綢緞上,鄉(xiāng)親們用金色絲線手工繡制的中文上書“馬友友鄉(xiāng)長五旬華誕榮慶”,落款為“歡迎馬友友鄉(xiāng)長返鄉(xiāng)獻藝籌委會同仁敬賀”。正文由14個大字組成:“云中白鶴游超曠,石上青松處潔清?!?/p>
走遍世界的馬友友,面對濃烈、質(zhì)樸的鄉(xiāng)親鄉(xiāng)情,激動得說不出話來!他含著熱淚,緊緊擁抱鮑正梁,這是遠方游子對鄉(xiāng)親鄉(xiāng)情的無言感激和無限深情!
當(dāng)天下午4時,友友不顧旅途勞頓,準(zhǔn)時趕往寧波大劇院出席媒體見面會。原定時間10分鐘,結(jié)果延長到40分鐘,這在他的演出生涯中也許是少有的。
50多名中外記者和來賓,面聆了這位世界音樂人的活力和風(fēng)采。友友走上主席臺時,簡直是蹦跳著上去的。一落座,就用寧波話說:“謝謝大家,阿拉寧波人今天回家了!”并表示這是他學(xué)會的所有寧波話。據(jù)說他這次來寧波、上海巡演之前,專門花一個月惡補中文。生長在國外的友友,說法文、英文、德文比中文流利得多,但他還是堅持說中文,遇到不會表達的詞語,就轉(zhuǎn)身向翻譯討教。
一位來自臺北的女記者問:“中國有句老話‘五十而知天命’,你知道是什么意思嗎?”友友一字一句地說:“‘五十’我知道,‘命’我知道,另外兩個是什么?”真是率真得可愛。
省內(nèi)媒體一位記者問:“聽說您經(jīng)常出入白宮,為元首、貴賓演奏,這和明天在大劇院為公眾演出的感受有什么不同?”友友笑答:“其實我出入白宮的機會也不多。演出的場合、對象不同,對我的感覺都是一樣的,都是我的客人。我的音樂是為大家展示美,大家坐在一起就是朋友間愉快的交流,一起欣賞美好的東西?!?/p>
記者席上還有一位特殊來賓——馬友友已故堂兄馬友岳的遺孀朱荷香,這位79歲的老人聞訊從咸祥趕來會晤從未謀面的堂弟。當(dāng)友友知道她是“堂阿嫂”時,馬上親熱地交談起來,分手時,還以西方禮節(jié)擁抱著老人親了親。
秋雨淅淅瀝瀝,寧波的秋天多少使人情緒有點黯淡。但馬友友的出現(xiàn),在蕭瑟秋涼中注入了一絲暖意,他用那標(biāo)志性的笑容和獨特的魅力照亮了這一方空間。見面會結(jié)束時,他動情地說:“你們說的話,你們問的問題,你們給我的禮物,我會永遠放在心里。”
空前的巴赫演奏
夜雨霏微,灑落在寧波灣頭三江口寬闊的江面上,灑落在屋頂造型猶如蝴蝶展翅、層層疊落的大劇院上。鄉(xiāng)親們?nèi)缂s而至,人們手持劇院贈送的紅色玫瑰花,入座靜候馬友友的出現(xiàn)。舞臺的三面被圍攏,感覺如友友此前所言:“劇場就像是我家客廳,我在客廳里向大家展示美好的東西。”
11日晚間的“巴赫之旅”大提琴獨奏,預(yù)定開演是7時30分,但實際是7點45分。在臺下正襟危坐的觀眾們并不清楚,這遲到的一刻鐘時間里,馬友友在干什么?事實上,他在后臺做了一件常人不可思議的事:一邊走路,一邊拉大提琴。
他對旁人說:“我太興奮了,沒法進入狀態(tài)?!钡谝淮位氐焦枢l(xiāng),見到那么多素昧平生的親人,讓他兩天來一直處于亢奮狀態(tài)中,他因此感到緊張。而巴赫的世界是寧靜而釋然的,過度的激情會妨礙音樂的表達?!白屛乙粋€人靜一靜”。他說著拎起那把制作于1722年威尼斯的蒙塔尼亞納琴,竟然站著拉了起來。在后臺10多米的空間里,來回走,拉琴揣摩,尋找巴赫的感覺。他不愧是拉了40多年的巴赫。當(dāng)他拎著大提琴微笑著登上舞臺時,全場的掌聲足足持續(xù)了一分鐘。他的寧波話開場白“阿拉寧波人”,讓掌聲再次響起。他說,一個人在臺上有點孤獨,但他看到坐在那么美麗的大劇院的觀眾,就感覺到說不出的快樂。我在寧波找到了家族的根,而我在音樂里也在找根,巴赫就是我音樂的根。
他坐上燈下的單椅,巴赫的世界仿佛向觀眾走來。渾然忘我的友友,在偌大的舞臺上,自由地?fù)]舞著音樂的翅膀,弓弦縱橫交錯迸發(fā)的音色,時而凝重、沉靜,時而浪漫、灑脫,讓人呼吸到奔放淋漓的音樂氣息。大劇院內(nèi)鴉雀無聲,人們屏息凝神地享受著行云流水般的天籟之音,感受到琴聲的穿透力,一曲終了,眾人如醉如癡。
如意料之中,謝幕時的氣氛十分熱烈,“歡迎馬友友返鄉(xiāng)獻藝籌委會”的兩名代表快步上臺獻花,擁抱了心目中的英雄,表達著鄉(xiāng)親們的深情祝愿。全場起立,掌聲雷動,1500名觀眾見證了大師和故鄉(xiāng)人兩情相悅的動人一幕。
次日的《浙江日報》在頭版醒目位置報道演出消息:《游子琴聲傾動父老鄉(xiāng)親》,認(rèn)為“馬友友這次回鄉(xiāng)是尋找一種認(rèn)同感的,鄉(xiāng)情成了他同觀眾交流最自然的紐帶……濃得化不開的鄉(xiāng)情和大師精湛的技藝,陶醉了全場觀眾?!?/p>
吉祥如意的故里
煙波渺渺夢悠悠,家在江南海盡頭。友友的老家緊靠海邊,在浙江寧波市東南面的象山港內(nèi)港畔,今日鄞州區(qū)咸祥鎮(zhèn)咸二村馬家,是友友祖輩生生息息的故土家園,友友的父親、姑姑和叔叔就是從這里出發(fā)走向世界的。
咸祥鎮(zhèn)南臨象山港入???,北依綿延的天臺山余脈,素有“濱海重鎮(zhèn)”之稱。遠古時期這里是淺海海灣,明代漸成陸地。因倭寇騷擾,海盜出沒,因而成為朝廷屯兵戍守的要塞。清代中葉,大批移民來此圍海造田,這里便成了寧波的“西部牛仔”——拓荒者的家園。坦蕩的濱海平原上,盛產(chǎn)魚、鹽、棉、米,堪稱浙東的鹽業(yè)基地?!跋滔椤边@個地名,就是以“鹽湯”的諧音轉(zhuǎn)化而來。鄉(xiāng)民們以海水煮鹽為業(yè),鹽灶遍布,故稱“鹽場”。到了清末,鹽場遠去,市鎮(zhèn)繁榮,鄉(xiāng)里約定俗成,改寫作“咸祥”,寓意“吉祥如意”。
從寧波市區(qū)通往咸祥鎮(zhèn)有42公里路程,過了東錢湖,一路之上青山隱隱,綠水迢迢,吉祥如意的故里已遙遙在望。咸祥馬家老屋位于后道路13號,毗鄰市鎮(zhèn)老街,曲徑通幽,是一幢歷經(jīng)百年滄桑而故容不改的江南民居,在當(dāng)?shù)卣袜l(xiāng)親們的盡心修繕保護下,幸存至今。故居粉墻黛瓦,馬頭墻高聳,為磚木結(jié)構(gòu)的兩層樓房,底層中堂舊稱“丁酋堂”,是供奉先祖神位的祖堂。馬氏第一代移民咸祥的始祖,是磨剪刀、鏟菜刀的小手工業(yè)者,后開打鐵鋪,為遠近農(nóng)戶鍛造各類鐵器農(nóng)具。到了第三代,即友友曾祖父馬永金,已完成了資本的原始積累,至祖父馬明揚,實現(xiàn)了由手工業(yè)者向商業(yè)經(jīng)營者的轉(zhuǎn)型,馬氏家聲大振,已為望族。清光緒丁酋年(公元1897年)是馬家財運亨通的發(fā)跡之年,有趣的是這個“酋”字橫倒了去,就像舊時打鐵必不可少的風(fēng)箱——手工鼓風(fēng)設(shè)備?!岸∏跆谩笔谷硕H猶聞打鐵“丁當(dāng)”之聲,它隱含緬懷祖宗開基恩德、追思先祖創(chuàng)業(yè)維艱的深意。
這次隨同友友來寧波作尋根之旅的至親中,有81歲高齡的姑姑馬孝、54歲的胞姐馬友乘,還有一位定居馬來西亞的姑表姐。11月11日,友友忙于當(dāng)天演出事務(wù)的準(zhǔn)備工作,她們?nèi)幌刃刑ぴL故里。馬氏族人和純樸的鄉(xiāng)親們殷勤接待,始終陪同她們參觀訪問。
1911年,友友已故的父親馬孝駿出生于故里祖居,孝駿的妹妹孝,也在祖居度過了自己的童年和少女時代。當(dāng)闊別故里60余載的孝踏進老屋時,內(nèi)心真有說不盡的感慨!江南煙雨籠罩著故居老屋,年邁的姑姑蹣跚而行,撫摩著堂前庭柱,真是“鄰人滿墻頭,感嘆亦唏噓”!在來寧波之前,姑姑就對友友講過“做人要‘飲水思源’”,這里就是馬家的生命之源、宗族之根啊!鄉(xiāng)親們張羅置辦午宴,盛情款待海外歸來的“稀客”,大家共同舉杯祝福,“如今足斟酌,且用慰遲暮”。
彩云飄過故鄉(xiāng)
74歲的金昱昱老人,世居咸祥鎮(zhèn)西街,與馬家老屋相距咫尺之遙,半個多世紀(jì)來,老人見證了咸祥古鎮(zhèn)和馬氏家族的歷史變遷,作為寧波市歡迎馬友友鄉(xiāng)長返鄉(xiāng)獻藝籌委會的成員,他最終成為友友故里尋根、上山祭祖的向?qū)А?/p>
多年來,憑著一顆真誠善良的心和濃得化不開的鄉(xiāng)情,老人陪同、接待來自各方面的人士和媒體參觀訪問馬氏故居、祖塋,介紹相關(guān)歷史背景已難計其數(shù),現(xiàn)在他要迎接的不是別人,竟是馬友友本人!信息是寧波方面直接用電話通知的,馬友友回故居的前晚,金昱昱和老伴度過了一個不眠之夜:金昱昱興奮得難于入眠,老伴通宵念起金剛經(jīng)、太平經(jīng)、土地經(jīng),祈禱佛祖保佑友友的尋根之旅一路平安。
上午7時,老人依約守候在咸祥鎮(zhèn)口,9時許寧波方向馳來的一輛旅行車,大家相見握手、致意后,立即驅(qū)車黃牛嶺下,開始徒步上山。
深秋的江南山嶺依舊一派蔥蘢,“空山新雨后,天氣晚來秋”,一行人踏著鄉(xiāng)間小路,魚貫而行。金昱昱揮動柴刀披荊斬棘在前,眾人隨后跟上,走完石徑側(cè)轉(zhuǎn),不久終于順利到達祖墓前。
祖墓位于山岡半腰,坐北向南,襟山帶水,景色頗佳。從曾祖馬公永金落葬一百年來,墓廬依舊,花草無恙。1948年營葬的祖父馬明揚先生墓在曾祖墓左側(cè),兩墓并列,相距咫尺。
垂立著,瞻謁著,乃萬里來歸的游子;
供奉著,跪伏著,是認(rèn)宗歸祖的賢孫。
墓冢前,簡樸的祭奠儀式按照寧波的鄉(xiāng)風(fēng)民俗進行。從江東七塔寺置辦來的香燭、干果、錫箔等一應(yīng)祭品,在墓前陳列就緒,金昱昱從旁指點協(xié)助。當(dāng)香燭點燃、祭禮開始之時,連日陰霾的天空,忽然透射出燦爛的陽光,穿越雜樹枝隙灑落在墓地上,金昱昱目睹了享譽全球的傳奇人物在祖父墓前長跪不起的感人一幕。在陪同大師祭祖掃墓的兩個多小時中,老人深切體會到了“偉大寓于平凡”的真理,友友入鄉(xiāng)隨俗,平易近人,毫無架子。他想起了馬孝駿生前說過的話:“富過三代方出音樂家?!笔亲娓傅呢敻弧⒏赣H的文化成就了馬友友。
在故里,友友很少說話。他徜徉于良疇桑梓、阡陌如繡的四明大地,在潺潺流水旁俯視,在巍巍青山上仰望,體味著大自然對個人生命的陶冶和礪煉。他對很多東西感到新奇和有趣,他對稻田、水牛、炊煙都認(rèn)真地觀察、詢問,看得出,他在汲取音樂靈感。他說:“父親以前很思念故土,經(jīng)常提起。今年我50歲了,想到了父母,想到了祖宗,所以很想到故鄉(xiāng)看一看……”在回程的路上,友友虔誠地說:“感謝我的祖先,他們給了我那么多的藝術(shù)靈感?!?/p>
Cellist Searches Roots in Ningbo

Ningbo, an important port city in eastern China's Zhejiang Province, is home of many celebrities of national and international renown. A group of celebrity watchers in Ningbo take it upon themselves to keep an eye on these prominent people and their brilliant deeds.When they saw Yo-Yo Ma on TV performing Requiem on the anniversary of September 11 in New York in 2002, they thought it was a good idea to invite the cellist of world renown to come back to visit his father's hometown.
A short letter was delivered to Yo-Yo Ma through a leader of overseas Chinese community in California. Ma replied that he hope he would visit Ningbo one day. In early 2005, his manager in the Asia-Pacific region and his US agent visited Ningbo respectively. They were pleased with what they saw at the Ningbo Grand Opera House. The deal was clinched.
However, the hometown people were a little bit uncertain of his coming, for by November they had not heard of anything from the cellist. They wondered how much the hometown captured the heart of the cello master, who was born in France and grew up in America. Then, in early November 2005, the news reached Ningbo that Yo-Yo Ma would visit Ningbo pretty soon and hold a concert after his concerts in Taiwan.
Yo-Yo Ma arrived. He received a red-carpet reception at home. A welcome ceremony was held at the president suite of Nanyuan Hotel. Three precious gifts were presented to the cellist. The first one was a handful of hometown soil contained in a crystal bottle. The soil was taken from the base of his ancestor's house. The second gift was an album entitled Home Scenes. These pictures described the old family house, the ancestors?tombs, and scenery of the home village. The album also had some yellowed photos that carried stories of Ma's ancestors. On the last page of the album was a family tree including not only names of Ma's ancestors and relatives but also those of Ma and his children. The third gift was a birthday streamer made of silk. The red silk piece measured 2 X 1.45 meters with a birthday poetic couplet embroidered in golden silk threads to convey the best wishes of the hometown people.
In the same afternoon, Yo-Yo Ma attended a press conference at the Ningbo Grand Opera House. It was scheduled for 10 minutes but it lasted 40 minutes. Ma speaks English, French, and German more fluently than he speaks Chinese. He had boned up on Chinese before he came to Ningbo. So he uttered his first greeting in the Ningbo dialect and insisted on speaking Chinese. When he got stuck with some words, an interpreter helped him out.
Also present at the press conference was a 79-year-old widow, wife of a cousin of Yo-Yo Ma. When the two in-laws met, they chatted happily. When they departed, Ma hugged the old woman in the western way.
Ma's solo concert was held at the magnificent opera house on the evening of November 11, 2005. The grand structure on the river looks like a huge butterfly. Hometown people came, each with a red rose sent out by the concert organizer. The hall was decorated like a sitting room where the cellist would meet his relatives.
The concert was scheduled to commence at 7:30 pm. But Ma did not appear on the stage till 7:45. What had he been doing? It turned out that Ma had been so excited that he had to try hard to calm down. In order to bottle up his fervent emotions so that he could be in an appropriate mood to play Bach suites, Ma walked around while playing the cello in a 10-square-meter room in the backstage. The 46-year experience in Bach performances finally took over. When he appeared on the stage beamingly, the ovation lasted for a good minute.
The concert was a huge success. At the end of the concert, Yo-Yo Ma faced another long standing ovation from an audience of 1600 hometown people. On November 12, Zhejiang Daily ran a first-page story describing Yo-Yo Ma's concert in Ningbo.
After the concert, Ma visited Xianxiang Town, 42 kilometers south of Ningbo city. Where the town stands was a shallow sea bay in the past. It was not until the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) that the land gradually formed. As Japanese pirates frequently invaded the area, the area was a frontier guarded by the government army. In the mid Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), migrants arrived and began to colonize the area. Ma's first ancestor in the town was a blacksmith making household pieces such as scissors and knives as well as farming tools. After the hard work of three generations, the family became wealthy. The year 1897 marked the great turning point of the family's good fortune. Yo-Yo Ma's father was born in 1911 at the family's residence. The house still stands intact today. In the morning next day, Yo-Yo Ma visited the tombs of his great grand father. It was a ceremony he performed in memory of his ancestors, for his father once told him that a family could only produce a musician on the strength of the fortune accumulated over three generations.
The warm-hearted reception touched Yo-Yo Ma, regarded by the hometown people as a man traveling away from home. He tucked away the memories of his hometown: the gifts, the local dialect, greetings, best wishes, smiling faces, rice paddies, buffalos, and light smoke curling upward from kitchen chimneys in the dusk.
