Homely

英國大文豪狄更斯應(yīng)邀到美國主持一場講座，他說了一句話：“I can see many homely faces here.”（我在這里見到很多誠懇真摯的面孔。）話音未落，有些人頓生慍色，有些人悻然離席，場面混亂。為什么呢？ 原來問題出自homely一詞。狄更斯用homely的本意是“誠懇、真摯”，殊不知homely一詞在美國英語中卻含貶義，意思是“形穢貌丑”。

Table

英文單字table，用作名詞，相信每一位讀友都知道是“桌子”。 然而，這個淺顯的英文字用作動詞時，卻曾使英美的政治家發(fā)生爭執(zhí)。 1964年英美召開裁軍會議時， 英方代表提出要table a motion. 美方代表竭力反對。雙方爭論不休。

最后，美國一位官員說：“But it‘s a very good motion. Why do you want to table it?” (“但這是一個很好的動議，你們?yōu)槭裁匆阉鼣R置？”)這時英國代表恍然大悟，發(fā)現(xiàn)雙方的觀點本來是一致的，都打算討論這個提案。

原來，英國代表說的table a motion，在英國英語中解作“討論動議”，然而在美國英語中卻解作“擱置動議”，即是“不討論動議”。

咬文嚼字

a bed of roses :稱心如意的境遇，安樂窩。玫瑰的溫床，指一個愉快悠閑的地點、工作或職位；安逸的生活(a pleasant easy place ，job ，or position ;an easy life)。Life isn‘t always a bed of roses you know.你知道，生活未必都是稱心如意的。

philanderer :花花公子。

Philander 是西方古代愛情小說和詩歌中的情人名。philanderer指到處拈花惹草無意結(jié)婚的人(a man who has sex with many women ，without intending to have any serious relationships.)。Betty‘s ex-husband turned out to be a philanderer.貝蒂的前夫原來是一個花花公子。

sexual harassment :性騷擾。

用不受歡迎的舉動或語言對異性進行騷擾(unwelcome touching or remarks about sex from someone ，especially if you are expected to accept this to make progress in your job.)。Many TV talk shows feature victims of sexual harassment.許多電視談話節(jié)目是講述性騷擾受害者的故事。

cry wolf :喊“狼來了”，發(fā)假警報。

源于《伊索寓言》。謊報狼來了，發(fā)假警報(to give a 1 alarm ;warn ofa danger that you know is not there.)。The general said that the candidate was just crying wolf when he said that the army was too weak to fight for the country.將軍說這位候選人所言有關(guān)軍隊太弱不能為國作戰(zhàn)的話是假的。
