As a high school student with English literature 1 one of my main subjects, I have to know about Hamlet! Shakespeare’s Hamlet is probably the most important play by the most important writer in English. 2 (see) quite a few productions of Hamlet, I was full of 3 " "(confident)—until the Peking Opera came to town!

Dating back to the 18th century, Peking Opera has over two hundred years of history. To find out if it’s 4 (easy) than a Shakespeare play 5 (understand), I just went and saw The Revenge of Prince Zidan—the Peking Opera version of Hamlet.

Starting with an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments, the opera brought a 6 " "(complete) new sound to my Western ears. At first, I thought what I heard was a violin, but later I learnt that it was an instrument with two strings called jinghu. Then, seeing the main characters come on stage, I was 7 (surprise)! The costumes and masks were amazing. The performers of course sang in Chinese, but the music, exaggerated movements and mime 8 (help) get the meanings across to the audience. Before experiencing the opera, I wasn’t sure 9 I would enjoy it. But, in fact, I was on 10 edge of my seat!

        閱讀理解

If you go to Hollywood and look around the coffee shops and restaurants, it is unlikely that you will meet your favorite film star. However, it is almost certain that you will meet Dennis Woodruff.

Dennis is a “film” star—well, sort of. You learn this quickly because he tells everyone he meets about this. He wears a T-shirt that says “Dennis Woodruff, world-famous actor”. He also hands out videotapes of his films for $10. Dennis describes himself as Hollywood’s best-known out-of-work actor. He has been looking for work for 25 years. It is true that he has been on television over 300 times and has worked in about 45 films, as an extra (臨時(shí)演員) of course.

“Actually, I’m a film star. It’s just that no one has realized it yet,” says Dennis. You can watch him auditioning (試演) for parts in front of the security cameras at local restaurants. People recognize him and then, sadly, ignore him.

One of the saddest tales he tells is about how he nearly made the big time. The famous actor John Wayne was going to give him a chance, but unfortunately he died. The famous producer Otto Preminger wanted to make him a star. He also died.

Dennis first had the idea of selling himself over 20 years ago when he asked a director why he had been refused for a part. “Because you’re not a big name in Hollywood,” came the answer. Dennis immediately wrote his name in huge letters on the top of his car. It didn’t get him any work, but it did get him noticed.

Dennis has set up a production company with his brother, and he has sold 15,000 copies of his videos. True success, he feels, is just around the corner.

        1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Dennis?

        A. He is a film star. B. He is unsuccessful.

        C. He is better known on TV. D. He has made many films.

        2. What is people’s reaction to Dennis’ behavior at local restaurants?

        A. They cheer him on. B. They try to follow him.

        C. They pay no attention to him. D. They talk with him about films.

        3. Why did Dennis write his name on his car?

        A. To show his courage. B. To fight with a director.

        C. To advertise his latest film. D. To make himself well known.

        4. What can be the best title for the text?

        A. A Rising Star in Hollywood B. The True Success of a Film Star

        C. Famous for Not Being Famous D. Big Star for Starring in Films

        閱讀七選五

In your life, you may be asked to speak in front of people. Although it sounds a little scary, even those with stage fright can speak successfully to the group with adequate (充足的) preparation.

Practice your speech before the big day. 1 If possible, practice the speech in front of a friend or family member to get used to saying it to real people.

Remember why you’ve been invited to speak. Keep your mind on the fact that you were selected for this important role. The speech organizers must have seen something valuable in you or your expertise (專業(yè)知識). 2

Remember that fear of public speaking is very common. 3 Most of the people in the audience would be feeling the same fear and stress that you do in your position. Knowing this may make you feel better.

4 What you say should be tailored (專門的) to why you’re there and who you’re speaking to in order to avoid sounding general. If speaking to a charity group, mention the good work certain specific individuals have done for the cause. If speaking at a business conference, briefly state why you want to help these people.

Keep eye contact with the crowd. 5 Pick one person in each section and look at him while you’re speaking. After each important point in your speech, switch your focus to another section. When you focus only on one person at a time, the size of the crowd isn’t as frightening.

        A. A good memory is really helpful.

        B. Show appreciation to your audience.

        C. Mention your audience in your speech.

        D. The more you have it memorized, the better.

        E. It’s normal to feel awkward or stressed out before a big speech.

        F. Separate the crowd into 3 sections spiritually as you get up to speak.

        G. knowing other people’s respect for you should reduce some of the fear.
