“If you want to know your past, look into your present conditions. If youwant to know your future, look into your present actions,” states the Chineseproverb. Life is filled with uncertainty. We rarely have a 1)precise picture ofwhat lies ahead, so we take what arises with determined courage.
It’s natural to believe you are in control of your life, yet uncertainty isrequired because the seeds of opportunity lie in the unexpected.
At a deeper level, we may fear uncertainty because of a lack of lifeskills to 2)navigate through it. Known as a negativity bias, it is a mentalpredisposition to notice and ruminate on negative information while neglectingthe positive.
Author David Rock writes inYour Brain at Work, “The braincraves certainty. A sense ofuncertainty about the future andfeeling out of control both generatestrong limbic system responses.”As a result, your mind looks to yourexternal environment to reinforce asense of balance.
Bruce Hood affirms this in The Self Illusion, “In situations whereoutcomes are important, we get stressed by uncertainty and feel the need todo something so that we can have the illusion that we can control events.”
So, how can you embrace the unexpected without being overcome bythe accompanying emotions?
To embrace uncertainty requires a change in perspective. You must yieldto the intrinsic forces of life, not oppose them. However uncomfortable, youlean in to your fears and insecurities but do not run away from them.
Fear is a confronting emotion, yet you gain self-assurance when youembrace it as a useful emotion. You can turn down the volume on fear bybeing exposed to it a little each time.
Uncertainty is an inner knowing that everything will turn out exactly as itshould. It strengthens your commitment to abide with the natural order of life.
You must be comfortable with uncertainty because it exists in our lives.Don’t retreat from it but expose yourself to it a little each time.
It was the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius who once declared, “If youare distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itselfbut to your own estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at anymoment.”
Try finding the balance between uncertainty and maintaining controlwithout manipulating outcomes. Let go of any tension, anxiety and fear byembracing the unknown.
Uncertainty helps you to re-evaluate the past and make new choices inlight of what transpires. It presents opportunities to create a compelling futurebased on new information.

如果你想知道你的未來,看看你現(xiàn)在的行動就知道了。”生活充滿了不確定性,我們無法準確了解未來會發(fā)生什么,所以我們只能勇敢地面對任何發(fā)生的事情。
認為自己可以掌控自己的生活是很自然的事,但不確定性也是必不可少的,因為機遇的種子總是蘊藏在意外之中。
在內(nèi)心深處,我們害怕不確定性,因為我們沒有把握能夠駕馭它。這被稱為消極偏見,是一種心理傾向,即注意和深思消極消息,而忽略積極信息。
作家大衛(wèi)·洛克在《效率腦科學》一書中寫道:“大腦渴望確定性。對未來的不確定性和失控感都會導致強烈的邊緣系統(tǒng)反應(yīng)。因此,你的大腦會從外部環(huán)境來加強已知的平衡感。”
布魯斯·胡德在他的《自我的本質(zhì)》一書中肯定了這一點:“在結(jié)果很重要的情況下,我們會因不確定性而感到壓力,并覺得有必要做點什么,這樣我們才能產(chǎn)生我們可以控制事件的錯覺?!?/p>
那么,你如何才能在不被隨之而來的情緒所影響的情況下?lián)肀б庀氩坏降氖虑槟兀?/p>
擁抱不確定性需要改變觀點。你必須屈服于生命的內(nèi)在力量,而不是反對它們。無論多么不舒服,你都應(yīng)該屈服于你的恐懼和不安全感,但不要逃避它們。
恐懼是一種對抗情緒,但當你把它當作一種有用的情緒來接受時,你會獲得自信。你可以通過每次接觸一點兒來降低恐懼。
不確定性是一種內(nèi)在的認知,即一切都會完全按照應(yīng)有的方式發(fā)展。它加強了你遵守生活自然秩序的承諾。
你必須悅納不確定性,因為它存在于我們的生活中。不要退縮,但每次都要讓自己接觸一點。
羅馬皇帝馬可·奧勒留曾經(jīng)宣稱:“如果你對任何外在的事情感到痛苦,痛苦不是由于事物本身,而是由于你自己對它的估計; 而這一點你有權(quán)隨時撤銷。”
嘗試在不操縱結(jié)果的情況下在不確定性和保持控制之間找到平衡。通過擁抱未知來放下任何緊張、焦慮和恐懼。
不確定性可以幫助你重新評估過去,并根據(jù)發(fā)生的事情做出新的選擇。它提供了基于新信息創(chuàng)造令人信服的未來的機會。
