Saltwater Song is a typical form of Cantonese folk song, enjoying great popularity among farmers and fishermen in coastal and river network areas in Guangdong Province.Tanzhou of Zhongshan,home to the Lingnan folk song,is the representative area of Saltwater Song in Pearl River Delta.

During the course of years of labor,Villagers there have developed a custom of rewarding each other with songs to enrich their lives and promote the friendship between them,which serves as one of the essential ways of communication.Interesting and interactive singing competitions would be hosted on the stages before or after harvests, attracting numerous folk lovers in a sea of joy.Especially on the Mid-Autumn Festival, so eager are the villagers to have the“Mid-Autumn Festival Saltwater Song challenge”that the boats usually race to the middle of the river.With vivid lyrics, Saltwater Song truly reflects the locals'lives and tells their stories.

What made me extremely excited was that I accidentally got a chance to learn from Miss Jiang,a local music teacher,who has been awarded many times in Saltwater Song.Immersed in the enchanting melody she sang live for me, I couldn't help singing along with her.What an unforgettable and incredible experience! When I was leaving, she told me seriously,“As a significant part of Lingnan music and the main melody of Zhongshan folk songs in existence as well,Saltwater Song should be passed down from generation to generation.”Hearing her words,I knew it was high time for me to inherit this tradition,help it develop and make it shine with greater brilliance.
