The rain finally petered out. A ray of light quietly made its way through the curtain into my room. Opening the window, I found myself screaming “Wow!” Dark clouds had disappeared into the distance. Raindrops glittered on tree leaves in the moonlight like thousands of twinkling fireflies. I was mesmerized. It was something you didnt expect to see after a long, dreary, rainy day.
I stood by the window for a while. A chilly breeze gave me a start. I swung around, and lost myself in dazzling colors cascading before my eyes. Everything in the room appeared blended into a blurred background of a moonlit sky and dancing clouds. The only thing that stood out distinctly was the angel in a picture on the wall. The angel was in white, holding flowers, and extending out his wings. He was smiling at me.
“This smile is so familiar. I must have seen it somewhere before. But when?” murmuring to myself, I slipped into a chair by the window, lost in thought.
Squeezing into my minds eye were details of what appeared to have happened some five years ago. A long, old country road extended before me. A donkey was sauntering along, its hooves kicking playfully in the slippery mud. A ditch ran murmuring through the fields. Trees in a nearby village were shrouded in mist. The crescent-shaped new moon was hanging from the treetops. I believed I caught a glimpse of a kid standing by the roadside, holding something white in his arms. After the donkey had passed by, I threw a casual glance backwards. There he was, barefoot, holding flowers, and smiling at me.
“This smile is so familiar. I must have seen it somewhere before,” I thought aloud.
Another picture was slowly revealing itself before me. It was about what seemed to have occurred about ten years ago. I was sitting under the eaves of a thatched cottage. Raindrops kept falling on me, and on the puddles by the doorsteps, creating rings of ripples that were racing to spread out. In front of the cottage there were wheat fields and rows of grape trellises. After a nice shower, everything looked so fresh, and every color so vivid, especially bright yellow and tender green. It finally cleared up. I hurried downhill. Right in front of me, I saw the moon jumping out of the sea. It suddenly occurred to me I had left something behind. I paused and turned. Standing by the cottages door was an elderly lady, holding flowers and smiling at me.
The smiles I saw in these three encounters were all so similar and so subtle. Like pieces of fine silk, they floated towards and joined each other.
At this moment, I found myself dissolving into the clarity of mind, as if I were strolling in a fairyland or returning to my hometown. The three smiling faces that had been drifting before me were now no longer distinguishable from each other. They had fused into a harmonious whole of love.
