James Matthew Barrie was born in Kirriemuir, Angus,Scotland on May 9, 1860. When he was six, his older brother, David, died in a skating accident at 13. David was his mother's favorite, and James soon took the role to take his older brother's place in his mother's heart. He wore David's clothes to lessen her deep depression.
James attended a private school when he was seven. In 1873, he left his hometown to study at Glasgow Academy and also went to Dumfries Academy for five years' study.James Matthew Barrie had always loved to write. His mother told him stories and read adventures to him from R. L. Stevenson. In 1878, James attended the University of Edinburgh where he received his Master's degree in 1882. One year later, James began writing for The Nottingham Journal on various topics including novels and plays. In 1885, he moved to London, where he sold his works to fashion magazines to get his start.
Throughout his career, James tended to write from personal experience. Most of his works can be related to some moments, places, or close persons in his life. When his mother, whom he most adored and admired, died in 1895, he wrote her biography,Margaret Ogilvy, in memory of her a year later. His mother's characteristics are found in his female characters.
A year before his mother passed away, however, James married Mary Ansell, an actress. Although they attracted each other, the marriage went through many challenges like the couple's inability to have children. Slowly, James sought affection from other people's children and created a distance between him and his wife.
James could be described as small and shy. As a man a little more than five feet tall, he was quiet and awkward around women. Like Peter Pan, James was a boy who wouldn't grow up. James took such elements of life as his awkwardness with, yet dependence upon women, his love of children, and his own longing for childhood and shaped them into one of the best-loved characters of all time.
James Matthew Barrie suffered from pneumonia (肺炎) in his last days which resulted in his death on June 19, 1937. He was buried at Kirriemuir in the same cemetery along with his parents and siblings.
