It was my first day on campus. The Winona State University of Minnesota, a small but clean school. I flew a long way from Bangladesh to be here. The whole place looks white from the plane as it was covered with snow. I knew from my brother that its very cold in Minnesota as it is on the north. So I covered myself with warm clothes.

I was nervous to be in a new place, but kind of curious too. A Bangladeshi student of WSU came to pick me up. I found myself in a new world, new people. Its impossible now to express those feelings in words here. But I can tell you my experiences. I met students from different countries, like China, Japan, Africa, Iraq. I met one guy from Palestine. Time was moving with joy, I met a beautiful girl from South America who was really a nice person.

We got a lunch break. First time in my life I got the chance to taste American food which looks nice but didnt suit my appetite as I love rice and curry(咖喱烹調(diào)的菜). But I know I have to depend on these foods. After lunch we were taken to visit the campus. Our group leader who was in very formal clothes took us to different buildings and explained clearly. By this time I made some friends who are from Malaysia. I was enjoying every minute. We were also taken to a building to take pictures for our school I.D. After that we were led to our dormitories.

The sun went to bed soon and I felt tired as I walked a long way in the snow and its very cold outside. I prepared my mind for the next day as I have to go to my first class at 8:30 a.m.. So, time to go to bed.

        4. What can we infer about the Winona University from paragraph 1?

        B. It is not far from the authors home country.

        C. It is a place that the author has never been to before.

        D. It was snowing when the author reached there.

        5. Which word can describe the writers experiences after coming to school?

        A. Frightened. B. Happy. C. Annoyed.D. Anxious.

        6. Why doesnt the author like the American food?

        A. He was not hungry.

        B. He had a bad appetite.

        C. The food was terrible.

        D. The food disagrees with his taste.

        7. Which of the following may be the best title for the text?

        A. My first day on campus.

        B. A cold and tiring day.

        C. An unforgettable experience.

        D. A great international university.

On the first day of a new school, shy? people can easily get very anxious when they enter a new classroom and have new classmates.

Shyness and social anxiety are, in fact, the result of an overly excited amygdala(a part of the brain). People who are shy or socially anxious have an sensitive amygdala. So, for the shy students , the first thing to beat shyness is to understand what is taking place chemically in brain when theyre feeling anxious or shy and there is no need to be frightened.

Shy students usually have trouble making new friends too because they can easily feel awkward when having conversations with their new classmates. But they should know that every person at one time or another does or says something that is a little awkward. Awkward situations or strange silences are not your fault alone. Awkward things will happen, there will be silences, thats okay; in fact, everyone says something foolish from time to time.

The most difficult moment for shy students might be when they are called to answer a question in class. Most of them will feel anxious and frightened in such situations. The suggestion is that if someone asks you a question, just stop. Think about the question and then answer it. Most socially anxious or shy people feel the need to answer a question at once, as soon as the final word leaves the mouth of the other person. If a person needs to answer right away, it shows that a person isnt comfortable with silence. Its usually the least“powerful”person in a conversation who doesnt want there to be silence. But silence is okay. It shows that you are comfortable in your skin.

Last but not least, always remember that everyone is different, and not all people are outgoing. Just be yourself.

        12. What is the key to overcoming shyness for shy students?

        A. Making more friends.

        B. Remembering they are different.

        C. Telling themselves not to worry anymore.

        D. Realizing that anxiety comes from amygdala.

        13. What does the author advise shy students to do?

        A. To make more new friends.

        B. To understand their faults.

        C. To consider a question carefully.

        D. To answering a question right away.

        14. What does the underlined part probably mean?

        A. You dont feel nervous.

        B. You become powerful now.

        C. You are satisfied with your skin.

        D. You dont care about otherswords.

        15. What is the main idea of the passage?

        A. What difficulties shy students may have.

        B. Why some students feel shy in a new school.

        C. How shy students can beat shyness in a new school.

        D. How shy students can make friends in a new school.

        2. B 題干考查的是register classes內(nèi)容,故在文中第四點中尋找信息,由其中if you still dont know how to do, you can leave it alone and contact the UC HelpDesk at 513-556-HELP(513-556-4357)for help可知B項正確。

A foreign visa might be necessary for you and make your life easier when studying abroad可知。

It was my first day on campus可知C項正確。

First time in my life I got the chance to taste American food which looks nice but didnt fulfill my appetite(胃口)as I love rice and curry可知,美國食物雖然看起來不錯,但實在是不適合我的胃,因為我的胃習(xí)慣了米飯和咖喱,故選D項。

You may be feeling a little anxious or even frightened now because of these challenges,結(jié)合前面的兩個what if 引導(dǎo)的疑問內(nèi)容,可知challenges 此處指的是你來到一個新校園所遇到的困難、挑戰(zhàn),由于這些困難挑戰(zhàn),你可能會感到焦慮害怕,故選B項。

        9. D文章第三段集中講述了學(xué)校關(guān)于學(xué)生成功的概念(“Success”for students at ISB comes in many forms)以及學(xué)校為學(xué)生提供的多種鍛煉機(jī)會(a lot of opportunities given to students;offers over 100 after-school activities to students),結(jié)合此段最后一句I am confident that every student can develop their interests, explore their abilities and achieve success in this school,

They will make sure you can learn how things work at ISB,可知Peer helpers 可以幫助新生較好地了解ISB這所學(xué)校。

        12. D 由第二段第三句 the first thing to beat shyness is to understand what is taking place chemically in brain可知要克服害羞首要的是要理解大腦里面正在發(fā)生某種化學(xué)反應(yīng),因而感到焦慮害羞,the first thing 對應(yīng)題干中的key。

The suggestion is that if someone asks you a question, just stop和第四句Think about the question and then answer it可知,害羞的人不要著急回答問題,應(yīng)該多思考一會。

But silence is okay. It shows that you are comfortable in your skin?

If you are going into senior high school, its important that you realize how different it is going to be中的different可知此處在談?wù)摳咧信c初中的不同,故B選項中的change 與之對應(yīng)。

Revising old Notes regularly is a must,可知后面應(yīng)該談?wù)摰氖菑?fù)習(xí)舊筆記的好處,故選F項。

If you start out by setting goals that are too high, it will only lead to a lot of disappointment,可知設(shè)定目標(biāo)要合理,故選E項。
