Mom and I were putting the finishing touches on dinner， and my little niece Jessica came in to set the table. Instead of going to the dish cabinet， she went into the pantry where there was a stack of old， mismatched dinner plates on the bottom shelf.

When she had set all six places， she stood back and sighed， “Oh， Grandma， your plates are so beautiful. Ours are all alike！” We had a good laugh at her innocent remarks， but as I think back to all those years， I believe she was right. Those plates were beautiful.

Mom worked for the local council on aging as a housekeeper. She did many of the little things that allowed elderly people to stay in their own homes. Most of her clients got Meals on Wheels， a service in the 1970s. They received a hot lunch and a cold snack to have later in the evening. This was really not very much food. Every evening Mom would make to?go meals on these mismatched plates covered with aluminum foil， and then deliver them to the people who she knew didnt get enough to eat.

This was about ten years before microwave ovens became common so it was important that the food be on a plate that could be reheated in a regular oven. Instead of a cold sandwich and macaroni salad， Moms clients dined on Beef Manhattans， pan?fried chicken or meatloaf， along with veggies and a piece of pie or cake. Mom and Dad did this even after Mom left her job， and Mom continued after Dads death until all her former clients either passed away or moved out.

When I was cleaning our Moms house after her death， I kept one as a souvenir. That plate is a sweet reminder of the lessons of generosity and caring for ones neighbors that were modeled for me by my parents.

For those concerned about wrinkly old skin， it might be a creative solution： an elastic（有彈性的） “second skin” that can be smoothed on to make aged tissue look more youthful.

The wearable film， developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology（MIT）， has shown promise in a series of small experiments where it was applied to wrinkles， under?eye bags and areas of dry skin. When applied to the face or body， the thin， transparent layer sticks to the skin and supports the tissue， making it look and behave like younger skin， its producers claim.

“What weve been able to do is create a cream that you can put on the skin， and then when its on the skin it can actually form， essentially， an elastic ‘second skin，” said Bob Langer， who led the research. Tests in the lab found that the polymer film（高分子膜）， which is only 70 thousandths of a millimeter thick， reduced the appearance of wrinkles and under?eye bags， and helped keep moisture（水分） in areas of dry skin.

The layer is designed to be applied in the morning， and then peeled off at night， In previous studies， the second skin withstood normal daily wear， and the stresses and strains of exercise and swimming， without falling off or causing irritation. It also survived exposure to rain.

“Its something you can wear for a whole day or longer， depending on the physical forces that get applied to the area where it is worn，”said Daniel Anderson， who helped develop the product at MIT. “You cant tell youre wearing it.”

While normal cosmetics can mask imperfections on the skin， the new coating changes the way skin behaves by giving it the elasticity of young skin. It was developed with help from two companies.

Last summer， I hiked into a remote forest， which my family and I camped in a tree house. I spend the days fishing， swimming， hiking， and， sometimes， just absorb the scenery in its purest forms. It was a perfect escape in life in Beijing， a capital city that I love very much.
