My 7-year-old daughter Leeny always has her nose in a book. She even took to reading in the car on the long drive to summer camp, which was where she lost the book. This is the first lost library book in my life.My family has always been overeducated, but we were poor.I didn't own books.I borrowed books. However,my daughters have more books now than I owned in my whole childhood, and I knowingly contribute to it by adding to the stacks(堆).So it's probably my fault that when Leeny realized she had lost the book, she shrugged(聳肩).“Sorry.I can't find it,”she said.“It's only$20,right?What's the big deal?”

I felt the need to make her feel responsible for the book. She agreed to help me clean the chicken coop (籠子)in trade for my paying the library fine.I thought this idea was very clever because cleaning the coop is some work I had been avoiding for months. It was summertime and dust floated in the air.But my girl,my animal-loving mini-me,thought shoveling chicken poop(鏟雞糞)was the most fun she'd had on a Saturday morning in a long time. She didn't feel any of the emotions that punishment is supposed to introduce. In fact, she looked as if she might lose another on purpose in order to clean the coop again.I stood, somewhat dumbfounded, watching her.

It took me a while to realize what had happened, why my punishment had failed so completely and why I didn't care. The fact is that I had Leeny help me clean the chicken coop.I was there, too, shoveling chicken poop, fetching the clean straw and feed.Leeny's little sister,Vicki, was inside watching a cartoon while my husband paid bills.Only Leeny and I were outside. She had me all to herself for the first time since Vicki was born, and she was enjoying all the attention for once.I didn't know what she learned about responsibility, but I found that I didn't care about the book any more.We bonded over that unpleasant job and spent quality time together:mother, daughter, and chicken poop.

        4.How does Leeny find reading?

        A.It is very challenging.

B.It is better to be done in a library.

        C.It is full of enjoyment.

        D.It costs a large fortune.

5.The underlined word “it”in paragraph 1 refers to the fact that_______.

A.the author's daughters own too many books

B.the author's daughter often lost library books

C.the author could never have enough books to read

D.the author didn't own many books

6.How did the author feel after she saw Leeny's cleaning work?

        A.Ashamed. B.Astonished.

        C.Embarrassed. D.Upset.

7.What's the best title for the text?

        A.What I owe to Leeny:More attention

B.My daughter drove me crazy, but I felt grateful

C.Surprise:My daughter loves cleaning chicken coops

        D.My punishment failed,but I didn't care

A robot navigates through the strawberries, detecting ripe ones, picking without bruising and placing them in its basket. It sounds futuristic but it is possible now thanks to Rubion, the picking robot for strawberries. This piece of Belgian innovation is not only an answer to the labor shortage in the agricultural industry, but also allows growers to increase the quality of its produce—which in the end benefits the consumer.

Demographic (人口結(jié)構(gòu)的)and socioeconomic numbers show that the labor shortage in the agricultural industry is a fact. But for Octinion the focus is clearly on adding quality.“Thanks to robotics,we have so many possibilities, much more than a human could ever do.Harvest prediction, picking according to market needs, simply picking when the berries are ripe instead of when workers are available—these are just a few examples of what is possible now for a grower,”says Tom Coen,CEO of the Octinion Technology Group.“The consumer will also notice the difference,as strawberries will be fresher and show less bruising.”

Introducing robots in an industry where almost everything gets done by hand is more of a revolution than an evolution. It calls for close cooperation with all stakeholders(利益相關(guān)者).Tom Coen says,“Not only have we been working together with growers and test centers across the world for the past couple of years, breeders have also been keen on being part of the technological developments.”

In 2014 a team of Belgian engineers started the development of the robot. In the meanwhile,Octinion wasn't the only company presenting a concept.Product Manager Laura Guillaume says it's not a surprise that the company from Leuven is the first to actually present a commercial product:“By developing the robot from the beginning,we are able to make it practical in greenhouses or tunnels.” Octinion plans on launching harvesting robots for other crops in the upcoming years.

8.What can we know about the robot?

A.It can help solve the problem of labor shortage.

B.It makes little difference to the quality of the fruits.

C.It is developed by a group of Belgian engineers independently.

D.It has been put into use around the globe.

9.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

A.The good news of the robotic picking.

B.The advantages of the robotic picking.

        C.How the robotic picking works.

D.Different attitudes to the robotic picking.

10.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.The robot was introduced to the market in 2014.

B.Octinion is the only company to put forward the idea of the robot.

C.The robot can be used in any situation.

D.Various harvesting robots are on the way.

11.What can be the best title for the text?

        A.How robots pick strawberries.

B.Fruits will be picked by robots.

        C.Strawberry-picking robots are presented.

        D.A new robot was invented.

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity.Others say that competition is bad;for it sets one person against another and it leads to unfriendly relationship among people.

I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied (依賴)on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit(追求)of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten.

However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition.Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society.Teaching these young people,I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success.By not trying, they always have an excuse:“I may have lost, but it doesn't matter because I really didn't try.”What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot.Such a loss would be a measure of their worth.Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that one's selfrespect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued.Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve(緩解)can we discover a new meaning in competition.

12.What does this passage mainly talk about?

A.Competition helps to set up self-respect.

B.Opinions about competition are different among people.

C.Competition is harmful to personal quality development.

D.Failures are necessary experiences in competition.

13.Why do some people favor competition ac

        cording to the passage?

        A.It pushes society forward.

B.It builds up a sense of duty.

        C.It improves personal abilities.

        D.It encourages individual efforts.

14.The underlined phrase “the most vocal”in paragraph 3 means“________”.

A.those who try their best to win

B.those who value competition most highly

C.those who are against competition most strongly

D.those who rely on others most for success

15.What is the similar belief of the true competitors and those with a“desire to fail”?

A.One's worth lies in his performance compared with others.

B.One's success in competition needs great efforts.

C.One's achievement is determined by his particular skills.

D.One's success is based on how hard he has tried.
