With the demographic shift towards ageing societies, governments face the challenge of housing their growing elderly population in life-affirming communities. Kampung Admiralty is a prototype that offers solutions to this challenge, and has been a catalyst for change in Singapore's urban planning.
The public housing development offers senior citizens affordable housing, with all the amenities and services that are needed to empower the residents to lead active, independent lifestyles in a close-knit community.
Built on a 0.9 hm2site, the high-density development with integrated design stacks housing, amenities and public space on top of each other, making it a highly liveable, friendly and open space. A public plaza, food and beverage, public transport access and retail are at ground level, a medical centre in the middle and a public park, eldercare and childcare, urban farm and 104 apartments at the top.
The design uses a robust, resilient building form to facilitate community engagement. To help the residents connect to the community and facilitate intergenerational bonding, the development is designed to draw in the whole neighbourhood, making it a lively space for everyone. Its mixeduse programme invites people of all ages and backgrounds by catering to their daily needs.
The biophilic environment of the green spaces gives everyone a sense of well-being and brings biodiversity back into the built-up district. The lush green spaces encourage residents to spend time outdoors, leading a healthy, active lifestyle.
