Yang Yang became China’s first ever Winter Olympic champion when she won the women’s 500 metres short track speed skating gold medal at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002. She also won a second gold in the 1，000 metres and a silver medal in the 3，000 metres relay. In her Olympic career， she also won a silver medal in the relay at Nagano in 1998 and bronze in the 1，000 metres in Turin in 2006.

[2] In a glittering period of domination of her sport， she also won a remarkable 32 world titles2 in seven years， becoming the first speed skater to win six overall3 short track world titles， which she won consecutively from 1997 to 2002.

[3] Yang Yang’s greatest years were probably 2001 and 2002. She confirmed her dominance in 2001 by winning her fifth consecutive world overall title and during the three days of competition she reached the finals of all five events， taking gold in the 1，000， 1，500 and 3，000 metres individual races and the 3，000 metres relay， plus silver in the 500 metres. In 2002， while her focus was on the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City， she was also the most successful athlete in the World Championships in Montreal， winning one silver and four gold medals.

[4] After the 2003 World Champion-ships， Yang Yang took time off from competition， but came back in the 2004/05 season in the lead-up to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin， where she won the bronze medal in the 1，000 metres race. She retired soon afterwards.

[5] Since her retirement Yang Yang has had distinguished career in sports administration， being appointed a member of the International Olympic Committee in 2010. She has also been a member of the Athletes Commission of the World Anti Doping Agency and was a founding member of the Chinese Athlete Education Foundation. She was appointed Executive Director of the Chinese National Olympic Committee in 2006 and Vice-Chair of the Chinese Youth Federation in 2010. In 2014 she became Chair of the IOC Evaluation Commission for the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games. She is a global ambassador for Special Olympics.

楊揚在2002年鹽湖城冬奧會上獲得女子短道速滑500米比賽的金牌，成為中國第一位冬奧會冠軍。同屆冬奧會，她又在1000米項目上獲得第二塊金牌，在3000米接力賽中奪得銀牌。在其奧運生涯中，她還在1998年長野冬奧會獲得過接力銀牌，在2006年都靈冬奧會上獲得1000米銅牌。

[3] 2001年和2002年可能是楊揚運動生涯最輝煌的兩年。2001年（韓國全州短道速滑世錦賽），楊揚連續(xù)第五次獲得世界全能冠軍，由此鞏固了她的霸主地位。在歷經3天的比賽中，她進入了全部五個項目的決賽，先后獲得女子個人1000米、1500米和3000米單項及3000米接力四項冠軍，500米單項獲得銀牌。2002年，盡管楊揚全力備戰(zhàn)美國鹽湖城冬奧會，她仍然在蒙特利爾世錦賽中成為戰(zhàn)績最佳的運動員，斬獲四枚金牌和一枚銀牌。

[4] 2003年世錦賽后，楊揚暫別賽場，但2004/05賽季強勢回歸，并在之后的2006年都靈冬奧會上取得1000米的銅牌。不久后，楊揚退役。

[5]退役后的楊揚在體育管理事業(yè)上取得了杰出成就，于2010年被任命為國際奧委會委員。她還是世界反興奮劑運動員委員會成員及中國運動員教育基金會的創(chuàng)始者之一。2006年，她出任中國奧委會執(zhí)行委員;2010年，出任中華全國青年聯(lián)合會副主席。2014年，她成為國際奧委會2020年冬季青年奧運會評估委員會主席。此外，她還是“國際特殊奧林匹克運動會全球形象大使”。
