This book fully explores the rich historical connotation behind Yan’an fine arts and sorts out its systemic characteristics. Research Librarian and Deputy Director of Research Department at China Art Museum, Supervisor of the postdoctoral workstation at China Art Museum, Member of China Artists Association, Member of the Youth Federation of the Ministry of Culture, Distinguished researcher at China Academy of Arts, and Member of the Exhibition Exchange Committee at China Museum Society. He is mainly engaged in the exhibition and research of national art collections, and has participated in the preparation and implementation of the “national art donation and collection award plan for the 20th century” of the Ministry of Culture.
Yan’an art is an important chapter of Chinese revolutionary art in the 20th century, and an important object for the study of Chinese art history. Yan’an art laid the foundation of new Chinese art, and its core values and spiritual concepts still dominate the historical mainstream of contemporary art. Yan’an Fine Arts is a comprehensive integration of national forms and mass arts based on adhering to the new culture of the May Fourth Movement, which embodies the cultural characteristics of New Democracy. Yan’an Fine Arts not only serves reality, but also looks into future cultural construction. Artists experienced the tempering of practice to achieve the transformation of thoughts and be firm in their people-centered pursuit. However, the art world has relatively scattered and weak research on Yan’an art has resulted in a lack of systematic review on the historical evolution of Yan’an art. This book strives to establish a clear knowledge structure and logical system of Yan’an art based on in-depth studies of documents and works, and elaborate on the evolution of Yan’an art and the tradition of revolutionary art education. Combining actual creation, this book makes a historical scan and comprehensive review of the national and popular art movement of Yan’an art before and after the publication of Mao Zedong’s “Speech at the Yan’an Forum on Literature and Art”; and conducts an in-depth analysis of the debate on Yan’an art thoughts, including achievements in woodcutting, New Year’s paintings, comics, sculptures, etc., and outlines the framework of Yan’an Fine Arts from both theoretical and practical aspects. I believe this book can enlighten current art creation to inherit the blood of Yan’an art revolutionary culture, and explore the modernization path of national culture from the historical experience of Yan’an art.
