文/Satkulova Ayazan(丹青,哈薩克斯坦籍) 譯/張國(guó)錦
My name is Satkulova Ayazan, my Chinese name is Danqing, and I am an international student at Lanzhou Jiaotong University. My major is product design, so Mrs. Zhang, our dean of the School of International Education, gave me a very artistic name.
I come from the largest country in Central Asia. My home country is full of mountains. It has the deepest pool, flocks of cattle and sheep, galloping horses, kind and polite people with humorous souls, beautiful dances, the most nutritious hot soup noodles, and lots of warm sweaters. My home country is known as Kazakhstan. I want to bow to the people who know my country. If you know my country, then you can learn something about me. Some Chinese people are familiar with Kazak’s name because there is a minority nationality in China called Kazak.Cleanliness, politeness, and friendliness are the three principles of our country. I love my motherland very much. I am also full of feelings for China because I have my family in my homeland and my friends and teachers in China.
It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to go to a country and learn about the people and culture. Such chances are rare, especially for a person born in a family that is not rich. I am fortunate to study in China and become an undergraduate student of Lanzhou Jiaotong University. I learn directly from the source of China’s language and culture.
Before I came to China, I knew little about China. When I first came to China, what impressed me most was that the Chinese cities were exceptionally clean. In China, diligent sanitation workers are working hard to clean the streets every day. This picture makes me deeply moved, and it lets me know not to litter. There are many things like this. Gradually, I found that China is a clean country like Kazakhstan, and people are polite and friendly.
Teachers are genuinely concerned about us. They always help us when we are in trouble. Thus, the international students do not feel pressure or loneliness in China. Gradually, I began to learn the Chinese language, met a lot of friends. Moreover, I learned Dunhuang dance and gave students and teachers a successful performance of Dunhuang dance, which made me so happy.

Many countries and nations in the world have their unique dances. For example, ballet is in European countries. In China, in Gansu, I learned the local dance-Dunhuang dance.I remember one time the school organized its international students to make a field trip in Dunhuang. I learned that Dunhuang is one of the ancient cities on the Silk Road.In this city, the most famous is Dunhuang Grottoes art, a comprehensive art composed of architectural art, sculpture art,and mural art. Mogao grotto was hidden in the vast desert, but I was deeply shocked when I entered the grotto. I saw the ancient frescoes in the grottoes, beautiful flying, and dancing in the sky. They were in different shapes: some with clasped hands, some were holding lotus flowers gently, some were holding flower trays, some were strewing flowers, and some were holding various musical instruments. All were flying in one direction. They seemed as light as air, wearing long skirts, waving colorful ribbons that stretched in the wind. I did not expect that there existed such beautiful art in such a desolate place; it was really like a gem in the desert. As a student of art, I’m deeply attracted by the art here. It’s not easy for such a beautiful mural to be preserved here for thousands of years! I sincerely feel the breadth and profundity of Chinese culture.
In 2019, there was an art performance named “Green Spring of Longyuan” jointly sponsored and organized by the Department of Culture and Tourism of Gansu Province, the Department of Education of Gansu Province, and our school. The schoolteacher informed us to sign up for the Dunhuang dance. At that time,I did not know what Dunhuang dance was, but I guessed that it might be some dance-related to Dunhuang from the name of dance. Thinking of the art I saw in Dunhuang, immediately,I was the first to sign up. To my surprise, the teacher told us that Dunhuang dance originated from a city called Dunhuang.According to the contents of Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes murals, Dunhuang dance is a kind of dance handed down after several generations of professional workers’ refining, sorting, processing, creating, and practice. It turned out that I was imitating the flying dance on the mural. It was a fantastic experience!
When I first started to learn Dunhuang dance, I found it exceedingly difficult. It had no pronounced rhythm. Every movement was related to breathing. I was required to dance with the feeling of the music. But slowly, I found that learning Dunhuang dance was a good experience. When I danced, I felt very relaxed. Every movement is light and comfortable, and my heart gradually began to open. I recalled the beautiful murals I saw, carefully pondering the flying apsaras’ actions, and earnestly felt the breath of culture. Slowly, I learned how to show the beauty of the body and show the artistic beauty of Dunhuang with my own body. I think Dunhuang dance is charming, like dancing on a blooming jasmine flower.
Learning Dunhuang dance is learning a kind of dance and learning how to express and understand Chinese culture.
When I return to Kazakhstan, I will perform the Dunhuang dance for my family and friends. They may not have the opportunity to come to China or Gansu to see the Dunhuang murals. Still, they can enjoy the Dunhuang dance, appreciate Dunhuang’s beauty from my dance, experience the ancient and long history of China, and feel the charm of Chinese culture.Culture and art will transcend the space-time limits and go beyond the national boundaries. I will also tell them the story of Dunhuang and the exciting story of my study in China.
Finally, I would like to tell many friends, international students like me, no matter where you come from or which country you are going to, do not deliberately regard yourself as a foreigner. In fact, except for different cultures and views, we are all the same. We should calm down to learn about other cultures, to be ambassadors of cultural exchange.
I want to express my gratitude to China and Lanzhou Jiaotong University for giving me this opportunity to study here and bring me a good time and precious memories!
