        Do as the romans do

The customs in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a chinese host, he always puts more food onto my plates as soon as I have emptied it. That often discomforts me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I dont want to, because it is considered bad manners in the west to leave ones food on the plate. I have already noticed that when a chinese sits at an americans dinner party, he very often refuses the offer of food or drink though he is in fact still hungry or thirsty. This might be good manners in china, but it is not in the west at all. In the united states, it is impolite to keep asking someone again and again or insist on his accepting something. Americans have a direct way of speaking. If they want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “no, thanks.” When an american is fed with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “no, thanks. Ill take some diet, pepsi-cola[百事可樂(lè)] if you have it.”That is what an american will do. So when you go to the united states, you had better remember the famous saying: When in rome, do as the romans do.

Before you go to another country, its great helpful if you know the language and some of the customs of that country.

When people meet each other for the first time in Britain, they say “Hello” or “Nice to meet you” and shake hands. Usually they dont shake hands when they just meet or say goodbye. But they shake hands after they havent met for a long time or when theyll be away from each other for a long time.

Last year a group of German students went to English for a holiday. Their teacher told them the English people hardly shake hands. So when they met their English friends at the station, they kept their hands behind their backs. The English students had learned that the Germans shake hands as often as possible, so they put their hands in front and got ready to shake hands with them.It made both of them laugh.

“How are you?” is a nice question. Its a friendly way that people in the United States greet each other. But “How are you?” is also a very unusual question. Its a question that often doesnt need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “Fine”, even if the persons friend isnt fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isnt really a question and“Fine” isnt really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.

Sometimes, people also dont say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think youre wrong…” But it isnt very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “Im not sure.” Its a nicer way to say that you dont agree with someone.

People also dont say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, many talks over the phone finish when one person says“I have to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse:“Someones at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simply doesnt want to talk any more, but it isnt polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesnt hurt the other person.

Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people dont say exactly what they are thinking. Its an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and its part of the game of language.

        1. When a person in the United States asks “How are you?“, he or she wants to hear “ _______”.

        A. How are you? B. Hello.

        C. I dont know.D. Fine.

        C. Im sure I disagree.

        D. No, I disagree.

        3. A polite way to finish a talk is to say “_______”.

        B. I want to hang up.

        D. I dont want to talk any more.

        4. When a person says “I have to go now” “Someones at the door”, the person may be _______.

        B. hurting someones feeling
