When I was four years old, I got stung (蜇) by a bee! After that, I had a fear of bees. Thats when my parents suggested that I learn about bees instead of being frightened. I read picture books and watched videos about bees, and I learned that bees help make the food we eat because of their pollination (授粉). Take pizza, for example. If we didnt have bees to pollinate tomato plants, we wouldnt have tomatoes for sauce. And we wouldnt have cheese without pollination, either.

The bad news is that bees are struggling to survive. Some scientists think it might be because of chemicals that are used to kill other insects. What would happen if there were no more bees? I wanted to help. I thought, “What if I make lemonade, sell it, and raise money to help bees?” I talked to my grandmother Helen. She gave me her recipe for lemonade. It came from a cookbook from 1940.

I added honey to her old recipe. That way, I could sell the lemonade and donate some of the money to groups that are helping to save bees. I could also support local beekeepers by using their honey in my product. And I would be educating others on the importance of bees and helping to save them.

My dad showed me how to work out what supplies I needed to buy. At first, I sold lemonade at a stand at a kids business event. But I wanted to help bees all year round. We talked to a pizza place near where I live. They said they wanted to sell it. Now more than 30 stores sell it, too. This year we sold about 140,000 bottles. I love helping to save bees. Its the sweetest feeling ever.

Cold weather can be hard on pets, just like it can be hard on people. Sometimes owners forget that their cats are just as used to the warm shelter (住所) as they are. Some owners will leave their animals outside for a long period of time, thinking that all animals are used to living outdoors. This can put their pets in danger of serious illness. There are things you can do to keep your animal warm and safe.

Keep your pets inside as much as you can when the weather is bad. If you have to take them out, stay outside with them. When youre cold enough to go inside, they probably are too. If you must leave them outside for a long time, make sure they have a warm, solid shelter against the wind, thick bedding, and plenty of non-frozen water.

If left alone outside, dogs and cats can be very smart in their search for warm shelter. They can dig into snow banks or hide somewhere. Watch them closely when they are left outdoors, and provide them with shelter of good quality. Keep an eye on your pets water. Sometimes owners dont realize that a water bowl has frozen and their pet cant get anything to drink. Animals that dont have clean and unfrozen water may drink dirty water outside, which may contain something unhealthy for them.

        28. Paragraph 1 tells us in winter pets ___ .

        B. like to stay in warm places

        29. Why should pet owners stay with their pets when they are taken out in cold weather?

        A. To keep them company.

        B. To help them find shelters.

        C. To stop them from eating bad food.

        D. To know when to bring them inside.

        30. Left on their own outdoors in cold weather, pets may _____ .

        A. get lost in the wild B. dig deep holes for fun

        C. dirty the snow nearby D. run short of clean water

        31. What is the purpose of this text?

        A. To give practical advice. B. To solve a problem.

        C. To tell an interesting story. D. To present a research result.

        D

The kids in this village wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school. Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.

The key to their success: 20 tablet computers (平板電腦) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a US group called One Laptop Per Child.

The goal is to find out whether kids using todays new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing (分析) the project data say theyre already amazed. “What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,” said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopian program.

The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The devices camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work. He called himself a lion, a marker of accomplishment (成就) in Ethiopia.

        A. It is about the height of an average man.

        B. Bushes and grass can help to break a fall.

        C. Dont lose your head when a fire breaks out.

        D. No one knows for sure when a fire will happen.

        E. Knowing what to do during a fire can save yourself.

        F. The second floor windows are usually not very high from the ground.
