Dog Child of Chile

For more than two years “Dogboy”， as he was called by the local newspapers， lived in a cave with fifteen dogs near the southern city of Tulchano， Chile.

The boy would wander on the streets， along with several of the dogs， searching for pieces of food and leftovers. He would open up rubbish bins and garbage bags found at the back of restaurants and other food shops， sharing the food he found with the dogs. So close did the boy and the dogs become that one female dog fed him on her milk as if he were her puppy. The dogs become his family with close bonds being formed. The dogs took it on themselves to protect the boy from other stray （走失的） dogs， street kids and undesirables. They also slept next to him， keeping him warm during the chilly night and cold winters.

In 2001， Dogboy was captured by police as he tried to escape by diving into the icy waters of the southern Pacific Ocean. “The dogs are my family，” he told police. “Please let me go back to them.” It seems the boy did not want to return to “civilization”， preferring to remain with his new and trusted family. It was reported at the time that the boy s physical condition was far from good.

The boy， whose name has not been released， spent some time in hospital before being transferred to a children s home. It was realized the boy was missing his adopted family very much. Dogboy had not only lived with the dogs but loved them and as one social worker involved with the case said， she could only hope he could get used to living with humans again and get back to a more “normal way of life”.
