It was a busy day as usual. I was making sandwiches and balancing the phone between my shoulder and chin. The washing machine sounded as my husband walked in with our daughters. We had only about twenty minutes to eat? ?11? ?we had to take the girls to their next activity. My husband seemed a bit? ?12? ?that dinner was not on the table.

That night, I had a heavy? ?13? , thinking we were becoming slaves (奴隸) of the tasks we did everyday. We had become too absorbed (投入;全神貫注) in our own tasks and seldom cared about those around us. We needed to do something to? ?14? ?some meaning into our lives.

I bought a notebook, named it “Our Deed Diary” and held a family meeting. I told my family I wanted us all to think about doing a kindness for others every day. It could be for each other or for people outside our family. And we all needed to note down the deed in the notebook. I thought one deed a day was too easy.? ?15? , it was actually harder than it seemed because it had to be something beyond what we had already done. Sending birthday cards to people we already sent cards to every year would not work.

We had a rough? ?16? . On some days, someone would not remember to do a good deed, while on other days, we would forget to write our good deeds in the diary. After a few weeks, I found myself waking up in the morning trying to? ?17? ?what good deed I could do for someone that day. My daughters began to rush to me after school to tell me the good deed they had done.

Now, after a year, I am happy to say that it is making a difference in our lives. Instead of always? ?18? ?what the day will bring for us, we think about what we can do for someone else.

Who can imagine doing a simple kindness a day would be so rewarding? I feel my daughters have felt inner joy that you can only? ?19? ?by giving to someone else from your heart. The best thing is that you feel so great about doing something for someone else; you dont even look for or expect anything in? ?20? . So when someone does return the favor, it is an enormous and positive award.

Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned (禁止) at school for all children under 15 in France. Under the ban students are not able to use their phones at all during school hours, including meal breaks.

“I think its a good thing. School is not about being on your phone,” Paris mum Marie-Caroline Madeleine told AFP. “Its hard with kids. You cant control what they see and thats one of the things that worries me as a parent.”

There is no law like this in Australia, but some Australian schools have banned phones.

McKinnon Secondary School in Victoria introduced a total ban in February and Principal Pitsa Binnion said this has been a success.

McKinnon students still have a Chromebook to use in every class for day-to-day learning but theyre not allowed to use social media (媒體). Ms Binnion said at first “teachers cheered and students moaned (抱怨),”? but now theyre seeing the positives (優(yōu)勢). “They come to school and theyre not allowed to use phones at all during the school day, including lunch breaks,” she said.

“Its been wonderful in terms of students communicating with each other at lunchtime and not looking at their screen,” she said.

Ms Binnion also leads by example and doesnt use her mobile phone in school. “I think anyone can do it if weve done it.”

Not everyone agrees with the bans. Western Sydney University technology researcher Dr. Joanne Orlando wrote in online magazine The Conversation earlier this year that Australia should not ban phones in schools because its important to educate kids to live in the age they are raised in.

“A good education for students today is knowing how to use technology to learn, communicate and work with ideas,” she wrote. “Banning students from using smartphones is a 1950s response to a 2018 state-of-play.”

(? ? )21. Smartphones, tablets and smart watches are banned for all children under 15 in France.

(? ? )22. Madeleine welcome the ban because school is for studying.

(? ? )23. Mckinnon Students can now see the good of the ban.

(? ? )24. Teachers have stopped using phones at school as well.

(? ? )25. Dr. Joanne Orlando thinks the ban will prevent kids being tech-minded.

Trees are one of the oldest “citizens (公民)” of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.

Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to

protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.

When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit. It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade, oxygen and natural beauty; it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.

Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home to small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.

In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn about that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge.

Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees and take care of the trees!

(? ? )26. What can it be used as when a tree becomes hollow?

        A. A home to small animals.

        B. Food for all animals.

        C. Shade and beauty for people.

(? ? )27. What does the underlined word “hollow” probably mean?

        A. 空心的 B. 腐朽的 C. 焦糊的

(? ? )28. Put the following in the right order according to the passage.

        ①Grow very rapidly.

        ②Become a real adult.

        ③Have large, deep green leaves.

        ④Grow older and die.

        ⑤Produce flowers and fruit.

        A. ②①③④⑤ B. ③⑤①②④ C. ③①⑤②④

(? ? )29. Why should we enjoy every minute of our own life according to the passage?

        A. Because our life is becoming better and better.

        B. Because trees give us so much and make our world beautiful.

        C. Because each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge.

(? ? )30. The best title for the passage should be _______.

Obesity (肥胖癥) is becoming a problem in our busy society, and almost one in three American adults is now considered to be obese. Children obesity is also at an all-time high.

Obesity means being very overweight. If you are obese, you have too much body fat. If you eat more food than your body can use, this will make you put on weight. Food that your body does not need will be stored (儲存) as fat by your body.

The following are the major factors (因素) that increase the risk of obesity.

What you eat plays a major role in weight gain. Eating a lot of fast food such as hamburgers, sweet drinks, ice creams and other sweet food can increase the risk of becoming obese.

If you do not do enough exercise, you will put on weight as the food you eat is not being used to make energy for physical activities.

The chances of you being obese are greater if your parents are obese.

There are many psychological (心理的) factors that cause people to eat too much. People who are worried, unhappy or bored will often eat to make themselves feel better. This is known as comfort eating.

Age is another factor, as you tend (趨于) to be less active when you get older. When you get older, you need to eat less, and if you do not eat less, you will put on weight.

“What is success?” Mr. Black asked his 6th grade business class. It was his opening conversation for the first class of the term.

“Success is riding in a sweet car, watching an 80-inch TV, and living in a place with at least twelve rooms,” one student answered, earning (博得) laughs from all the students.

Mr. Black smiled, but shook his head, “Tom, that is excess (過量). That is not success.” “How about being able to provide for your family?” A blonde girl named Sandy in the front suggested as an answer.

“Now were getting closer,” Mr. Black smiled, “but try thinking about what you need and what you want.”

“Getting everything you want,” Tom shouted out an answer again, trying for more laughs. Mr. Black sighed, “I believe weve already talked about excess versus (與……比較) success.” “Getting everything you need, but some of what you want?” James, sitting in the back wondered aloud.

“Quite right!” Mr. Black clapped. “Success is getting everything you need and some of what you want. The more that you want to get, the more successful you are. You do reach a point where you are living in excess, though.”

“What does this have to do with business?” Tom asked. It seemed if it wasnt funny, he wasnt happy.

“Well, Tom, think of it this way: the point of business is to make a living to support your family. Once you have properly seen to (確保) their needs, you can then see to getting the extras that you want.”

“What if I dont have a family?” he continued to be difficult. “Then you have to provide for yourself, a family of one.”

“He has goldfish to think about!” Peter, Toms friend, shouted out.

“Then he needs to provide for a family of one with a fishbowl,” Mr. Black corrected himself. Tom nodded, satisfied with that answer.

“So in the next nine weeks, were going to study basic business situations, like having a checking account and understanding credit cards.”

Tom rubbed his hands together excitedly, “When do we get to start spending?”

“You already are, Tom. Youre spending time with us!” Mr. Black laughed. “Now, lets see what you guys know about credit cards...”

        46. What was Mr. Black?

        47. Which student didnt seem to be taking the class seriously?

        48. How did Mr. Black make his class lively and interesting?

        49. According to the passage, which word can best describe Mr. Black, patient or strict?
