上一期我們討論了社會主義核心價值觀(the core values of Chinese socialism)中社會層面的前兩個概念——自由(freedom)和平等(equality)，這一期我們來看看第三個詞——公正(justice)。

一、公正的概念

公正在英文中譯為justice /?d??stIs/ ，詞根為just-法律，公正 + -ice名詞詞尾，牛津詞典對justice一詞有五種解釋：

1. the fair treatment of people 公平；公正

例句：They are demanding equal rights and justice.

他們要求平等的權(quán)利和公正的待遇。

2. the quality of being fair or reasonable 公道；合理；公平合理

例句：Who can deny the justice of their cause?

誰能否認(rèn)他們的追求是合理的呢？

3. the legal system used to punish people who have committed crimes 司法制度；法律制裁；審判

the criminal justice system 刑法體系

例句：They were accused of attempting to pervert the course of justice .

他們因企圖妨礙司法公正而被控。

4. a judge in a court 法官

Chief Justice 首席法官；大法官；審判長

5. used before the name of a judge in a court of appeal （稱謂）上訴庭法官

Mr. Justice Davies 高等法院法官戴維斯先生

Idioms (習(xí)語):

1. bring sb to justice（將某人）繩之以法，緝拿歸案

例句：There are a great number of drug traffickers in this place, and we are determined to bring them to justice.

這一帶有很多毒販，我們一定要把他們繩之以法。

2. do justice to sb/sth; do sb/sth justice 公平對待某人（或某事）；給以公正的評價；恰當(dāng)處理某人（或某事）

例句：That photo doesn't do you justice.

那張照片不如你本人好看。

例句：You cannot do justice to such a complex situation in just a few pages.

你不可能僅僅幾頁就將這么復(fù)雜的形勢恰如其分地描述出來。

3. do oneself justice 充分發(fā)揮自己的能力

例句：She didn't do herself justice in the exam.

她在考試中沒有充分發(fā)揮出自己的能力。

反義詞 injustice / In?d??stIs /

意為“the fact of a situation being unfair and of people not being treated equally; an unfair act or an example of unfair treatment” 指不公正，不公平（的對待或行為）。

例句：The report exposes the injustices of the system.

報告揭露了這個制度的種種不公正。

Let us arm against injustice.

讓我們抵制不公正的行為。

Idioms (習(xí)語) :

do yourself/sb. an injustice 待……不公正；冤枉

例句：We may have been doing him an injustice. This work is good.

形容詞just / d??st /

Just 有兩個意思。

1. that most people consider to be morally fair and reasonable 公正的；正義的；正當(dāng)?shù)模缓侠淼?/p>

a just decision/law/society 公正的決定 / 法律 / 社會

2. appropriate in a particular situation 合適的；恰當(dāng)?shù)?/p>

a just reward/punishment 應(yīng)有的報償 / 懲罰

例句：I think she got her just deserts.

我認(rèn)為她罪有應(yīng)得。

二、關(guān)于公正的名言
