In a congratulatory letter to the 6th WIC, President Xi Jinping pointed out that the internet is embracinga stronger development momentum and broader development space.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of the internet and also the 25th anniversary of China gaining access to the global network. With 25 years of rapid development, China has quickly become an internet giant.
According to the World Internet Development Report 2019, released during the conference, China's internet development ranks second, behind the United States.A number of Chinese internet fi rms havecome to the fore over the past 25 years, including Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu.
In June 2019, the number of internet users in China hit 854 million, according to the China Internet Network Information Center.
While China has made breakthroughs in internet development, the report pointed out that China still lags behind in some sectors, like cybersecurity.
Cybersecurity for young people is a big concern. “The risk of minors being harmed by the internet has increased, with illegal information access, personal privacy leaks and internet addictions all rising,” Liu Liehong, vice minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China, said at a forum in Wuzhen.
To deal with the problem, the Cyberspace Administration introduced the Provisions on the Cyber Protection of Children's Personal Information in August, offering legal protection for children's online rights. Still, more efforts are expected from the government, companies and institutes to help build a good ecosystem in the sector.
