        Problems and Countermeasures of English Education in China

        As the most important common language in international communication in China,English education should not be neglected.This paper first expounds the basic situation of attaching great importance to English education in China.Then it analyses the main problems existing in English education in detail from two aspects:the serious imbalance between high input and low output of English education,and the great impact of English education on the teaching of other subjects.The reasons for these problems are the examination-oriented teaching in China.Finally,in view of these problems and their causes,some countermeasures and suggestions are put forward,such as attaching importance to quality education,stimulating students’ learning motivation,improving the reasonable setting of English courses,adopting new English teaching methods,and continuously improving the quality of English teachers themselves.

        I.Main Problems in English Education in China

        1.1 The serious imbalance between high input and low output in English Education

        Long learning time is an important manifestation of high investment in English education.It is generally believed that the sooner you learn English,the better.Like dancing,sports and musical instruments,you have to study hard and practice hard to achieve success over time.Now parents are fighting for their children.Families with good conditions begin to learn English when they are in kindergarten.They attend various English tutoring classes.Even in poor rural areas,they begin to learn English in the third grade.When they graduate from undergraduate or graduate school at the age of 20-30,they have studied English for more than ten years.But they found that their English level did not achieve the expected results.This is the serious imbalance between high input and low output of typical English education.

        1.2 English education has a great impact on the teaching of other subjects.

        English education has a great impact on the teaching of other subjects mainly in universities.Some teachers of literature,history and philosophy have come to the conclusion that their students spend so much extra-curricular time reviewing English,and some students even use professional time reviewing English sometimes,which only attaches importance to English learning.The serious neglect of other professional courses undoubtedly seriously affects the normal teaching and learning of professional courses.An excellent college student with all-round development of morality,intelligence,physique and beauty should not only have excellent English listening,speaking,reading and writing abilities,but also have strict logical thinking and language communication abilities.The cultivation of the latter abilities can not be obtained through English teaching.At the same time,they should also learn English courses.Attention should be paid to the study and mastery of basic courses such as mathematics and Chinese.In view of the fact that college students attach more importance to foreign languages than to Chinese,it is necessary for relevant teachers and educational departments to guide students in order to solve the problem.

        Ⅱ.Suggestions on Improving the Management of English Education

        2.1 Attaching importance to quality education and stimulating students' learning motivation

        Learning motivation can be divided into instrumental motivation,integrating motivation and survival motivation.According to the relevant research conclusions,survival motivation has the best learning effect,and integrating motivation is more durable,powerful and effective than instrumental motivation.The vast majority of primary and secondary school students in China can not learn English from survival motivation.For them,the teaching under examination-oriented education can only bring them instrumental motivation.In this case,the task of educational institutions and English teachers is to enable as many students as possible to have integrating motivation.That is to say,quality education should be emphasized,exam-oriented education should be weakened,teaching mode should be changed,so as to make as many students as possible interested in English,learn actively and independently as soon as possible and form good learning habits.

        2.2 Adopting new English teaching methods

        It is suggested to adopt the teaching method of "Spelling Leadership + Whole Language".The specific methods are as follows:First,Spelling Leadership.Because there is a certain regularity between spelling and pronunciation of English words,changing the phenomenon that students can not pronounce new words without phonetic symbols now,laying a sound foundation for free reading out of dictionaries;second,reading and listening simultaneously.Especially in the initial stage of learning English and just after the initial stage of learning,English teaching methods should adopt both reading and listening,so that students can also read the material sound.Students can read and listen first,listen and read first,or listen while reading.In a word,they should read and listen together.The third is grading increment.Students' reading materials should be divided into different levels according to vocabulary and grammar items.The higher the level is,the greater the reading amount will be.Fourth,get overall absorption.Teachers should do the following two things:instruct students how to use various English dictionaries and grasp the English language as a whole.

        2.3 Constantly Improve the Quality of English Teachers

        First,the relevant departments of the Ministry of Education organize experts to formulate English education standards,including English learning standards and English teacher standards;secondly,strengthen on-the-job training and continuing education for teachers;thirdly,carry out qualification certification for existing English education institutions throughout the country and issue qualification certificates for qualified persons;fourthly,encourage them to do so.Fifthly,all English teachers must obtain "English Teaching Qualification Certificate" before they take up their posts,and English teachers without this certificate can not engage in English-related teaching.
