Xie Hao
Xie Hao, with his network name “Soap”, is a contract photographer for ChinaVisual, tuchongcom and ZCOOL. Many of his works have been published on National Geographic, Southern Airlines and other magazines. As an advertising man who loves photographing, he has welcomed another identity in hie life: a first-time father!
As a person who is used to speaking with his camera lens, Xie Hao seems different in his means of expression.
Before we met, he sent me a picture of a second-hand bookstore and a message “I will meet you here at 10:00 am tomorrow”.
Like playing the game of treasure hunt, we followed the clue in the picture-the contact number and house number of the second-hand book store- and finally found him in a secondhand market at Zhongxing Road, Yuzhong District.
Capture the world of mortals
Xie Hao then told me that the reason why he chose to meet us in the small bookstore stacked up with old books was that he recently photographed a group of pictures about old days. “Here, it is like the scene in the TV play Neighbors, people all get along very well with each other. The storekeepers would often gather together to sip tea and chat. When some customers come, they would go to look after their own business. They even would eat together like partners.” Xie Hao told us.
He then took out his phone and showed us the pictures he had taken. “My shooting theme has not much to do with the second-hand goods. What I cared more is the lively atmosphere bred from the people’s making contact with each other year in year out.” he said.
Being a senior urban photographer, what Xie Hao wants to record is not only the spectacular cityscape, but also the colorful civil life. With his pictures, he led us to wander in the streets and alleyways of the city: we can see several foreigners playing mahjong skillfully in the teahouse; small retailers were busy with their new day in the Chaotianmen wholesale market at 4:00 or 5:00 am... Form his pictures, we also found the “most stereoscopic” life of common people: a three-layer road is built between two residential buildings and each layer leads to different floors. In the picture, we could see a resident carrying a bag and walking on the mazy road.

Life Is Like Doing Lessons
When we shuttled in the second-hand market with Xie Hao and talked about the topics about photographing, I was surprised that he didn’t take his photographic equipment.
Xie Hao noticed the curiosity in my eyes and explained, “In the past, whenever I saw something interesting or good, I would pick up the camera and take pictures. But when I looked through these pictures, I found that they were merely ‘beautiful and eye-catching’ without connotation.”
With his increasingly deep understanding to the city, Xie Hao nowadays would spend more time to do lessons: looking up data, checking 3D map and taking the field interview. “Once I have determined the shooting theme, I would walk out of the lens and walk into the real life as a resident of the city and then pick up my camera to record the life. Usually, I only take one day in a week for real shooting.” he told us.
Use My Own Eyes

Xie Hao has finished his 100th flight in April this year.
As a cityscape photographer, Xie Hao has been to many cities, but he always said that “No city is more special than Chongqing.”
“I have been photographing Chongqing for ten years,” he said. During the period, from pursuing the “recommended camera stand” in the circle of photography” to slowly understanding the city and re-exploring the city, he had his own language through lens.

For example, Dongshuimen Bridge and Qiansimen Bridge are the popular shooting points, but Xie Hao didn’t do it. Instead, he found an appropriate camera stand and photographed all the nine riverspanning bridges in Chongqing; another example, we are all familiar with Liberation Monument, if we shoot it by tiltshift, it will generate the unique sense of space level. If we shoot the Yangtzi River Bridge by UAV, the roads with layers upon layers will be like the films piled together; while through telephoto lens, the bridgehead in the distance of E’gongyan Bridge and the roads in front of us will be compressed into typical five-layer threedimensional transportation; if we take a overlook at the bend of rail line 3, Tangjia Courtyard Station, it will also be very fantastic!
With another aspect, we will have totally different visual perception. Xie Hao always feels that there are still many beautiful sceneries for him to discover and record in Chongqing.
