Holger Haenssle of the University of Heidelberg, in Germany, pitted an AI system against 58 dermatologists. The humans were able to identify 86.6% of skin cancers. The computer found 95%. So trained, and tested against the opinions of 21qualified dermatologists, the software could identify both the most common type of skin cancer, and thedeadliesttype as successfully as the professionals.

Last November, 100 lawyers and the artificial intelligence program Case Cruncher Alpha were sent to a competition by Londonlaw firms. Both the humans and the AI were given the basic facts of hundreds of payment protectioninsurancemis-selling cases and asked to predict whether the Financial Ombudsman would allow aclaim. In all, theysubmitted775 predictions and the computerwon hands down, with Case Cruncher getting an accuracy rate of 86.6%, compared with 66.3% for the lawyers.
