Big-Hearted Woman Donates 12 Reading Rooms in Six Years
By Zhang Shu
Zheng Rong, a 53-year-old woman living in Hangzhou, has donated to a program of 12 reading rooms for rural schools in Fuyang in the last six years.
The project started in 2013 when she was 47. Back then there were 12 of them working together in the name of a charity society. The organization disbanded itself after first two reading rooms came into being and the other eleven fellow donors withdrew from the project.
It was estimated that a reading room cost about 200,000 yuan. The 10 reading rooms would amount to 2 million. Local education authorities thought that the withdrawal of the 11 donors would put a period to the project.
Zheng Rong decided to carry it on single-handedly. She raised funds by selling off some jade pieces from her jewelry collection.
All the 12 schools are in rural areas of Fuyang, which was a rural county for at least a millennium and now is a district of Hangzhou since 2015. The reading rooms in 12 rural schools benefit a total of 11,592 students.
What Zheng Rong does is more than a donation of 2 million in cash.
She lives near the Qiantang River Bridge built in 1937. The nearest school that received a donated reading room from her is about 18 kilometers from her home. The most faraway one is located 63 kilometers away. The rest are all located 50 kilometers away. In the six years, she traveled to these schools for more than 40 times.
The most difficult drive in her memory happened in 2017. The highway was undergoing a maintenance project and it took her nearly 3 hours to get to the school for the opening ceremony. On her way back to Hangzhou at night, the car broke down. She got stranded. The village beyond the highway looked dark. She was to get to the ICU to look after her mom that night. While waiting in the car for emergency rescuers, she broke down and cried.
The last reading room was completed on August 31, 2018. It is at Yucai School in Dayuan Town. A ceremony was held in celebration of the completion of the project. Altogether, schoolmasters of the 12 schools in Fuyang all came to attend the ceremony and honored Zheng for the successful completion of the project.
All the 12 reading rooms were designed by Li Yanqin. She knows how much Zheng Rong went out of her way to complete the project. “Zheng treated each reading room like a child of her own. She gave each a poetic name as if they were all best scenic attractions of the West Lake. All the decoration materials are friendly to the environment,” commented the designer.
“The interior decoration for these reading rooms was full of boring and trivial details. Just like everyone else, I hated all these trivia. If I am different from others, I didnt quit,” recalled Zheng. In the six years, she went through a lot. Her mother was seriously ill at first and then passed away. Zheng herself had a surgical operation. She thought about quitting, but she remembered what her maternal grandmother taught her while she was just a young girl: honesty is based on kept promises. So she kept her promise.
The schools she picked all have children of migrant workers. She meant to turn these reading rooms into a space where youngsters can find ideal and future through reading and seeing a different world. “I want children in mountains to feel beauty and poetry. Probably they will want to take a journey into the world from there.”
Security guards at these schools know Zheng. At first they thought a donor must be a millionaire who came just to take a look and would do nothing manual, but they know better now.
After an interior decoration project was over and before a reading room was officially handed over to a school, she would come with a broom, a mop and a bucket, and rags. She insisted on cleaning the room up personally. She did it personally ten times. “It is my gift to children and teachers and I must do it myself,” she explained. “As a matter of fact, other people helped me.”
