The project occupies the interior of a historical city block where buildings from different identities and periods coexist. There are two industrial buildings and a convent that has been used as a hospital. The new building is positioned in order to bond together each of these structures and to de fi ne new external spaces. All the existing buildings are connected vertically and horizontally throughout the block. Inside, public functions are sheltered, like the foyer and auditorium, operating not only as passage spaces and meeting venues, but also as a part of a new identity.□

HU Heng: The designer should be Alvaro Siza's follower. Using mainly white long rectangular blocks, partially digging up negative geometries, cutting inside to form overhangs at corners, interleaving vertical and horizontal light wells, these modus operandi of Siza has been applied pretty decently.Only using a whole double pitched roof house as negative prototype is deviated from Siza's method. This is still the traditional static modelling thinking, unlike Siza's negative fragmental geometries(semicircle, L-shaped, reverse-U-shaped) that can be complementary and interactive, and create an organic and united interior light environment together. The same is true of the indoor double pitched house and the big staircase. Although delicate and beautiful, they are too independent to participate in the organisation of the light system. Therefore, this building is just wearing a fashionable coat of Siza, but still in the classical school inside.(Translated by CHEN Yuxiao)
FAN Lu: In the project of Architecture School in Tournai, the extension connects three renovated historical buildings – two industrial buildings and a convent formerly used as a hospital. The main entrance of the school features a house-shaped void cut through the newly built block. The gabled opening not only brings about historical sense for interior spaces, but also leaves a gap for the fa?ade of an old building so as not to block out natural light. The off-white appearance of the new building contrasts to the brick wall blocks, meanwhile it emphasises the distinctive void entrance. In addition, the shapes of interior auditorium, balconies in upper floors and gable-shaped window, echoing to the formal language of the void entrance.
