Unlike typical centripetal commercial complexes, West Village Yard adopts a centrifugal layout that encircles the entire block to maximize the inner area of sports and green. The vast park-styled courtyard forms a green basin containing diverse public life; meanwhile it is a representation of the original low-land landscape of Sichuan Basin - in both natural and cultural sense. Smaller bamboo courtyards coexist within bigger ones; and they are open to public so visitors can walk through freely. The spatial design carries on the everpopular leisure lifestyle among locals and refreshes their former collective memories. West Village Yard's functional structure provides individuals with customizable spaces, and their diverse expressions are integrated by the large scale of courtyard. In this way, the inner fa?ade eventually becomes a parade of marketplace scenarios. An elevated runway entwined the whole courtyard, connecting each floor from the underground to the roof. It brings excitements of unusual experiences, especially for joggers and cyclists; meanwhile it gives the project a dynamic look. West Village Yard is a monumental attempt to assemble everyday leisure activities and responds to people's real appeal and simple dreams in the lost space. It is able to sustain and develop itself yet vitalize the public life of surrounding communities.□

Jury Statement
We cannot help but wonder if architecture in Chinese cities today lost originality and the power of imagination of a diferent urban lifestyle due to the rapid process of urbanization and the increasingly stringent rules of city planning management. West Village Yard proves the opposite. This project earns its success through surprising innovate solutions and not through the mediocrity of currently popular urban community design. It creates a collective-living space in a large compound reminiscent of Chengdu's idealistic collectivism in the planned economic era and integrated into the new city life scenery. It synthesizes collective memory and richness, grand scale and vibrancy, utopian thoughts and "little happiness". The design fully demonstrates the understanding of the architects of today's China and moreover, the ability to improve urban vitality and defne the quality of a new urban life.□
