Variation in Regional Advantage of Forest By-Product Production in China From 2000 to 2010

Background Forest ecosystem provides a variety of products for human，like as timber and forest by-product，which are essential to the social and economic development．Therefore，research on forest products production has attracted more attention by scholars．The current research focus on the empirical research of influence factors of forest products production，analysis of socio-economic impacts and advantage of forest products production．However，these studies paid little attention to comparative advantage of forest by-product production．

Methods Taking rubber，resin，raw lacquer，tung seed and tea seed as examples，variation in regional advantage of forest by-product production in China from 2000 to 2010 was analyzed by the methods of concentration ratio and comprehensive advantage index．

Results During 2000 and 2010，concentration ratio of rubber production in Hainan，Guangdong and Guangxi decreased while that in Yunnan increased；concentration ratio of resin production in Guangdong，F(xiàn)ujian，Zhejiang，Hunan，Henan and Hainan decreased while that in Guangxi，Shanxi，Hubei，Jiangxi，Guizhou and Yunnan increased；concentration ratio of raw lacquer production in Yunnan，Sichuan，Guangxi，Jiangxi，Zhejiang，Anhui，Henan，Shanxi，Chongqing and Gansu decreased while that in Hubei，Guizhou，Hunan and Fujian increased；concentration ratio of tung seed production in Sichuan，Chongqing，Guizhou，Hunan，Jiangxi，Zhejiang，Anhui and Gansu decreased while that in Henan，Yunnan，Guangxi，Guangdong，F(xiàn)ujian，Hubei and Shanxi increased；concentration ratio of tea seed production in Guangxi，Hunan，F(xiàn)ujian and Zhejiang decreased while that in Hainan，Guangdong，Jiangxi，Jiangsu，Anhui，Henan，Hubei，Shanxi，Sichuan，Chongqing，Guizhou and Yunnan increased．According to the analysis of concentration advantage from 2000 to 2010：comprehensive advantage of rubber production in Hainan and Yunnan increased while that in Guangxi and Guangdong decreased；comprehensive advantage of resin production in Hubei，Guangxi，Guizhou，Chongqing and Shanxi increased while that in Sichuan，Guangdong，F(xiàn)ujian，Zhejiang，Anhui，Jiangxi，Hunan，Henan，Hainan and Yunnan decreased；comprehensive advantage of raw lacquer production in Hubei，Chongqing，Guizhou，F(xiàn)ujian and Hunan increased while that in Yunnan，Sichuan，Henan，Shanxi，Gansu，Anhui，Zhejiang，Guangxi and Jiangxi decreased；comprehensive advantage of tung seed production in Gansu，Shanxi，Henan，Sichuan，Chongqing，Guangxi，F(xiàn)ujian，Guangdong and Guizhou increased while that in Jiangxi，Hubei，Anhui，Jiangsu，Zhejiang，Hunan and Yunnan decreased；comprehensive advantage of tea seed production in Shanxi，Hubei，Chongqing，Guizhou，Sichuan，Jiangsu，Henan，Anhui，Yunnan and Guangdong increased while that in Guangxi，Hunan，Jiangxi，Zhejiang and Fujian decreased．

Conclusions and Discussions Concentration ratio of forest by-product production in southern China is higher than that in northern China，and the dominant factors for this phenomena are climate condition and human activity history．In southern part of China，the weather is propitious to develop forest resources，and human activities history is dominant factor resulting in higher concentration ratio of forest by-product production．Furthermore，low production cost and abundant labor caused an increasing trend in comprehensive advantage of forest by-product production．We recommend that regions with a relative high concentration ratio or comprehensive advantage of forest by-product production should be encouraged．Scale of forest by-product production in some regions with an increasing trend of concentration ratio should be expanded．Forest by-product production in some regions with an increasing trend of comprehensive advantage should be supported．
