The second meeting of“World Speaking”was staged on December, 7th, at“International Talent” magazine editor’s department. The topic was “My unforgettable trip around China”.
Filiz: A trip to Sichuan, that I will never forget
In summer 2012, when I was studying at the university for the third year, I with my classmates and professors, went to Sichuan for a week. I will never forget this trip. Among all the places we visited there, I liked Jiuzhaigou the most. I have been living in Beijing for quite a while, so I also went to Hainan, Anhui and Guangxi provinces and many other places, but I was so much impressed by Jiuzhaigou. I live in a big city, so I don’t have many chances to go out to see the nature, I think that for now Jiuzhaigou is the most beautiful place I ever saw.
I also went to the school toppled by the earthquake that had happened in Sichuan, the ruins remained untouched from the time when the earthquake had happened. There was a clock tower, with the minute and hour when the earthquake had happened carved into the tower. In Turkey where I live, earthquakes are not rare too. Because of what I had seen, I started to think what is the most important thing in my life. I think that the family is most important, we should cherish every day spent, the closer people are to you, the easier you take them for granted. Back home, on vacations, I always thought I had so much time on my hands. I used to go out and meet friends, buy things, and at home always be busy with my phone. But I felt regretful as the time was drawing near the end of holidays. I think that my deep thinking in Sichuan made me more mature.
I think that Sichuan citizens love and respect their culture, Sichuan has this typical Chinese features, I broadened my mind after visiting Sichuan. In my opinion, the Sichuaners know how to live a life, the rhythm of their life is very slow. I also saw pandas in Sichuan; to my mind, China takes a good care of animals.

Hamza: Diverse culture, dignified Xi’an
I have visited Xi’an just recently; I was so interested in Xi’an culture. There you can experience different stages of history and peculiar features of the culture. I met some Chinese people who could speak Turkish and Arab languages. In my country, there is a famous saying: “A person who travels to places knows more than the one who reads books”. (editor’s note: the Turkish saying is similar to one of Chinese: ‘Reading a book is like travelling a thousand mile’). If you don’t travel at all, then all that is left for you is to read books to absorb different cultures, but if you really went to a place, then you could experience this culture and history yourself.
Asian culture is very diverse, very rich. During the Tang dynasty, Xi’an, serving as a capital of that time, was also an important intersection point. I was exposed to the real Chinese culture where the Muslim culture was also thriving. Long ago the Muslims came to this place to sick the shelter. Two different cultures collided and mingled. To my mind, China should display this culture to the world.
Before I came to Xi’an, I had seen Terracotta army pictures, and after I visited the place myself, I really perceived all the power of theancient epoch. I can sense the ancient civilization through the Terracotta army. The Terracotta warriors were erected thousands of years ago, at that time China had already built its own culture.

Mikhail: Strolling in Yuanmingyuan Park in four seasons
I know that everyone who comes to Beijing wants to visit the Forbidden City first, but even before I had come to Beijing, I wanted to go to Yuanmingyuan Park. I like the places that are quiet, as I stepped into Yuanmingyuan, I experienced a very special feeling, the ancient wind of history blew into my face, I looked around at the ruins of Yuanmingyuan, at the scattered stones. Left and right, everywhere you could feel a dynamic spirit of Yuanmingyuan. Nowadays people cannot repeat the unique architecture of Yuanmingyuan. Now every time I come to Beijing, I always go to Yuanmingyuan first. Every time I visit this place, its’s a different experience. For example, once I saw a Chinese painter, who was drawing a lotus, near was a man playing erhu, the picture of lotus was perfectly accompanied by the flower fragrance, I still remember the artwork of this painter and the special fragrance. I like all four seasons in the Yuanmingyuan Park, but I prefer more when the flowers bloom.
Palouki: A trip to Harbin, a foreign spouse meets his motherin-law
I met my fiancé at the university when she lost her way in the campus, and I showed her the way. What a coincidence! My visit to Harbin with my fiancé is my most unforgettable trip in China. Before my trip to Harbin, the first thing to consider was the present for her parents. I talked to my fiancé about it, according to our habit, it was ok to bring a bottle of red wine as a present. However, my Chinese friends advised me to buy fruits instead. So I bought both red wine and fruits. Later I learnt her mom thought I shouldn’t have bought fruits. I spent two days at their home, and her mom wanted to know if I could cook, so I made fried eggs with tomatoes.
We also talked about marriage. Her mom knew by hearsay that in Africa men could have several wives, she was worried that I would have other wives. That was true, according to our law, the Africans could have as many wives as they please. But the trick is if you won’t get the approval of the whole “harem” of wives, you。can’t have the next wife. In Africa, if you have many wives that means that you are a very powerful man. But frankly speaking, the majority of African men have only one wife, I also want to follow their example. Her mom was eventually satisfied with my answer. Besides, her mom asked me, who would be the chief in the family? She hoped no matter what kind of job her daughter would be doing, she had to be the one in control of the family budget. I said, even though in my culture it is the man who takes care of the family budget, but I respect her mother’s opinion, so we are able to find the solution.
Random talk from guests about travel
Host: Dear guests, are there any delicious food you tried during your travel made the trip unforgettable?
Filiz: I am not a foodie, but I am very sensitive to dishes that I love. I like the Tianjin fried chop rice cake, Chinese doughnuts, rice balls with sesame and so on.
Palouki: Wushan grilled fish. There is a pepper inside the dish, and sesame, that makes you feel so content. Delicacies can take all your troubles away.
Hamza: When I was visiting Xi’an, I intended to try the famous noodles“biangbiang” and the soup with mutton and bread pieces. During my soup savoring, a friend of mine told me a legend about the dish. There lived a man who was in the grip of poverty. He went to Chang’an. On his way he asked one peddler for a sesame seed cake, but the cake was too hard, he could not even take a bite of it. Then he asked a peddler for a bowl of mutton soup and teared the bread into pieces and drowned them into the soup. He did not expect it to be so delicious, and put him into high spirits. Later this poor man turned into a governor. The mutton soup with bread that he had eaten turned into a favorite delicacy among the citizens of Chang’an. (editor’s note: the man Humusa was talking about was the emperor of Song dynasty Zhao Kuangyin).
Host: Everyone knows, Chinese language is broad and profound, different places in China have different dialects. Have you ever met with problems of language difference?
Hamza: There was a story that happened to me four years ago. It was my first time in Nanjing and I needed to buy some sugar. I asked my friend how to pronounce “tang”. I didn’t have my phone with me, on my way to the supermarket I was repeating “tang-tong-tun”. While I was doing so, I think, at some point I started to pronounce it in the wrong way. When in the supermarket, I uttered a sound, and suddenly no one understood that I was asking for sugar. Later I finally found someone who could speak English and he showed me where the sugar was on the shelf, the result was I still did not buy it right: I bought soda instead of sugar. When I got back home, I put it into my tea, my brother said: “It’s not sugar!”
Mikhail: Once when I was travelling in Urumqi, I went to buy some fruits, when I got some, I asked the peddler in Chinese: “How much are the fruits?” The shop assistant said: “14 RMB (40 RMB?)”. I was puzzled: 14 RMB or 40 RMB after all? I thought to myself it had to be 40 RMB, then I said: “How about 20 RMB?” He said: “20 RMB? It’s too much, 14 RMB”.Then I said again: “Ok, how about 10 RMB?” “4 RMB is too low, how about 8?” Ok, in the end we made it a deal at 8 RMB, and I got my fruits.
Host: Everyone, during your travel, have you ever had an experience of being a part of local festivals?
Filiz: Once I went to Yunnan province Pu’er town Mojiang county Hani minority autonomous region, when they celebrated the International Twins Day, Hani minority’s Festival of Sun. Mojiang county is a home to many twins. I went there at my second year of my university studies. On the Festival the Hani minority people dye people’s faces with black ink. I thought it was so interesting, I checked the meaning of the Festival and found out that it represented their worship of the fire. Besides, I want to add, that travelling strengthens friendship bonds. When I was travelling with my Korean friend, I discussed many deep and intimate topics with her. We went into a heart-to-heart dialogue. Therefore, it made our friendship even stronger. This girl recommended me one book, after I read it I thought it was so interesting, that this book brought some changes into my life.
Mikhail: About strengthening the friendship, I also have this sort of experience. Once I quarreled with my fellow compatriot, the result was he ignored me and I ignored him. That day we didn’t need to go to study, and the weather was so good. I was bored at home, so I decided to go to Beihai Park alone. I was listening to music and strolling. I did not expect to meet this friend also trolling in the park. We talked for quite a while, eventually there was no sign of a happened quarrel. We went back to our previous state of friendship. Later we went to the nearby restaurant to share the hot pot, I remembered one of my Chinese friends once said:“If you share hot pot with someone, you become lifetime friends”.
Host: All of you might have brought some small souvenirs from the places of visit. Can you please share this memory with us?
Palouki: When I was in Changsha, I bought a souvenir, something in the shape of a gourd, jade pendants. It was said, you should hang it in the women’s room, according to an ancient belief, so I bought it for my significant one.
Filiz: Speaking about small gifts, I buy postcards and bookmarks. Once in the Summer Palace I bought a bookmark in the shape of a qipao and gave it to my friend as a present, I think these kinds of small gifts are very practical, very beautiful, also have some sort of meaning.
Hamza: In Xi’an, one master carved my Arabic name into a souvenir which made it very special.
Mikhail: Generally speaking, I like to bring some weird food to my friends. The first weird thing that I bought was the dragon eye fruit; my parents liked it a lot. I also like to buy sugarcoated fruits on the stick, and hawthorn. The first time I went back home from Beijing, I bought worms from Wangfujing street. I brought large frozen worms, as a souvenir for my family, and then nobody ate it.(Chinese version by Wu Xingduo,English version by Anastasia Sukhoretskaya,Intern Yan Caiping participated in discussion and voice recording decipherment)
