        A

That warm day was the only day of the week without rain. I opened the door, took a seat and began to enjoy the wonderful sunshine. Suddenly, I noticed that the house near mine had been sold. An elderly lady was in front of the door, with some beautiful flowers beside her. I walked to her. She looked to be in her early eighties and had the prettiest white hair.

“Hi!My name is Karmen.” I said smiling brightly at the old lady. She smiled back and said, “Hello, Karmen. I’m Henrietta.” Her voice was very strong for someone at her age. Later, I learned she was alone and had no family or relatives to help her. From that day on, I often visited her and helped her with her housework and sometimes she gave me some delicious food. A year passed, and I considered Henrietta to be one of my best friends.

One day, I walked over for my morning visit and knocked on the door, but there was no answer. I knocked again, and she still didn’t turn up. So I let myself in, using the key she had given me. I checked her living room and then her kitchen. I finally went into her bedroom, and she was lying peacefully on her bed. Beside her there were two notes. One was her will, which said all that she had would be given to me. The other was a thank-you note. I went to her bedside and cried sadly.

Though several years have gone by, I still miss her deeply. Whenever I look at the beautiful flowers in front of her house, I remember the wonderful friendship we had.

In the clinic (診所), I asked if Michael could be tested again, so the doctor tested him for a second time. However, it was the same score.

Later that evening, I sadly told Frank what I had learned that day. After talking it over, we agreed that we knew our son much better than an IQ test. We decided that Michael’s score must be a mistake and we should treat him naturally as usual.

We moved to Indiana in 1992, and Michael began to study in the high school in the same year. He got good grades in the school, especially in biology and chemistry, which made us feel much better.

Michael went to Indiana University in 1995 as a pre-medical student. Soon, his teacher allowed him to take more courses than required (要求). In 1998, he succeeded in going to the School of Medicine, Yale University.

On graduation day in 2002, Frank and I took part in the ceremony (典禮) at Yale. After the ceremony, we told Michael about the low IQ score he got when he was six. Since that day, Michael sometimes would look at us and say jokingly, “My dear mom and dad never told me that I couldn’t be a doctor, not until after I graduated from medical school!” It is his special way of thanking us for we have believed in him.

Michael then asked for another IQ test. We went to the same clinic where he had received the test eighteen years before. This time Michael scored 126, an increase of 36 points. A result like that was supposed to be impossible.

Children often do as well as what adults, especially parents and teachers, expect of them. That is, tell a child he is “stupid” and he may play the role of a foolish child.

( )6. Michael’s mother asked the doctor to test her son again because ______.

        A. her son was not good at the test

        B. she didn’t believe the first result

        B. his parents were worried about his low IQ score

        C. he complained that his parents didn’t tell him the truth

        D. he did quite well in his studies

        A. carefully B. normally C. specially D. differently

        C. Michael became cleverer

        D. his parents shouldn’t keep his IQ score as a secret for so long

( )10. The writer wanted to tell us that ______.

        A. a child can do much better if adults believe in him

        B. to be a doctor is easy for a child if he has proud parents

        C. IQ tests are always wrong about whether a person is clever or not
