When I was told to play for a drama competition, I became nervous. I had never done anything like this before. But after reading Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, I was 1 about what was to come. The story was great and the sentences were so funny. I wanted to give it a 2 !

But the most difficult 5 was to be funny in all my acting. This is quite different from the way I am in real 6 .

“OK, it’s time to be a different me now!” I said to myself. At first, I couldn’t do anything 7 . I didn’t know what to do when acting in this silly 8 . But I always told myself that I was Sir Toby now and I should forget who I really was. The competition day finally came. When it was my 10 to perform, I took a deep breath and began my 11 . I tried hard to make my words clear enough to be understood and my actions 12 enough to make everybody laugh. When the results were finally 13 out, I immediately knew we had won first prize. I made it.

From this 14 , I’ve come to know that I can be a different person. It doesn’t mean I’ve changed my personality, but I can do something I had never 15 possible.

        A

A boy lost his arms in an accident. Since then, he has had to depend on the arms of his younger brother. In order to take care of him, his younger brother became his shadow (影子), never leaving him alone for years. Except for writing with his toes (大腳趾), he was unable to do anything in his life.

As the two brothers grew up together, they would often quarrel. Then one day, his younger brother wanted to live his own life, as many normal people do. So he was heart-broken and didn’t know what to do.

A similar misfortune (不幸) happened to a girl, too. One night her father went out looking for her mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for her parents, but knocked over the light, causing a fire which took her hands away.

Though her elder sister was willing to take care of her, she decided to depend on herself. At school, she always studied hard. Most of all she learned to be self-reliant(自立的). Once she wrote the following in her composition: “I am lucky. Though I lost my arms, I still have legs; I am lucky. Though my wings are broken, my heart can still fly.”

One day, the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a television interview program. The boy told the TV host about his uncertain future at being left on his own, the girl, however, was full of confidence in her life. It was a cool October evening. Excitement and family members filled the hall. I was only a 7-year-old girl, but I was the center of attention. Finally, after weeks of preparation, I would show off all my hard work in a dance performance. Everything would be perfect—so I thought. I waited backstage (后臺) all dressed in my black tights with a golden belt. In a loud and clear voice, the master announced that my class was next.

My dance class was doing a routine (一套動作) on wooden boxes two feet by two feet, facing the audience. All I had to do in the next move was put one foot on the box next to mine and keep my other foot on my box. It really was an easy move. I was concentrating so much on keeping the huge smile on my face and holding my head up that I did not look where I was going. I missed my partner’s box and slipped (滑倒). There I was standing on the stage floor when my classmates were on top of their boxes. I could hear giggles coming from the audience, and I felt the blood rush to my face. I remembered my dance teacher had told us, “If you make a mistake, keep smiling so the audience will not notice.” I did my best to follow her advice as I continued with the routine.

When the curtain (幕布) dropped, so did my hopes for the evening. I cried sadly. I ran backstage, but no one could calm me down.

Recently I realized I had been a star that night. I was embarrassed, but I fought the urge to run off the stage. Instead, I finished the routine with a smile on my face. Now when friends and family laugh about the time I slipped during a dance performance, I can laugh, too.

        A. Afraid B. Nervous. B. Confident. D. Funny.

( )7. Why did the writer slip during the performance?

        A. Because she didn’t see the box. B. Because the move was hard.

        C. Because she put the wrong foot in the box. D. Because the stage was high.

( )8. What happened after the writer slipped?

        A. She cried and left.

        B. Her teacher gave her some good advice.

        C. She stuck to the dancing show.

        D. Her partners encouraged her to continue.

( )9. The meaning of the underlined word “giggles” in paragraph 2 is close to ______.

        A. songs B. laughter C. tricks D. cries

( )10. Which is TRUE according to the passage?

        A. The writer now thinks differently about her performance.

        B. The performance was a show to welcome new students.

        C. The writer’s teacher scolded them about the mistake after the show.

        D. The writer’s friends were not pleased with her performance.
