People are changing with the times. And luxury is changing with people. Up to now, the idea of a modern luxury hotel was an oxymoron. Luxury hotels were traditional in design by definition—the more luxurious a hotel was, the more traditional looking it was expected to be. Ian Schrager recognized that this safe approach and \"give no offense\" design philosophy was itself an offense. With The New York EDITION, Ian Schrager and Marriott International respond to this changing landscape by introducing a new luxury to a new generation. The opening of The New York EDITION also inherits the brand's signature elements: absolute comfort, exceptional style and excellent service as all as unique design.
The New York EDITION has 273 rooms and is located in Madison Square landmark - the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower. Built in 1909, the Gothic-style building, which is also referred to as the Clock Tower, was modeled after the Campanile in Venice, Italy. At the time, the absolutely excellent location grants this tallest building in New York City a 360 degree view.
The interior of the hotel is designed by renowned designer David Rockwell. The lobby is a dramatic yet understated space with residential-inspired design elements. With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Madison Square Park, the lobby and lobby bar is an expansive yet intimate oasis for guests to soak in a palette of soft tones of oatmeal, silver and white in rich fabrics and leather. A sculptural grand staircase of lacquered steel exterior and a hand-selected cerused White Oak paneling interior creates an intimate and unique experience with its enclosed shape. Wide plank wood flooring in a light oak finish adds warmth to the 14-foot-tall, light filled space.
The hand selected Black Walnut lobby bar and reception niche with desk add warmth to the modern interpretation of a dense beamed Venetian ceiling. Alvaro Aalto lounge chairs rest in front of a 30-foot long, hand-forged blackened steel fireplace, while the oversize, amber illuminated back-bar framed with concrete molding and ivory Venetian plaster wall adds an unexpected and playful twist. Pre-cast custom concrete tiles that mimic the building's original limestone fa?ade form window casings and serve as accents for the walls and floors.
On the 2nd floor, about 270 square meters, the full-time Clock Tower restaurant has a long history. This venue consists of three restaurants, a billiard room and a bar, forming a comprehensive interpretation of the elegant philosophy of the New York EDITION. Inspired by the vibrant colors of Dutch Masters such as Vermeer and Rembrandt, the restaurant has ivory colored ornamental restored plaster ceilings and rose, green and blue velvet chairs and sofas, a subtle play between modern and period detail. Located on the second floor of the tower, overlooking Madison Square Park, the restaurant features original, restored oak floors stained in dark ebony, table tops in mahogany wood with dark bronze tulip bases, French polished custom dining chairs upholstered in radiant colored velvet, and walls embraced by beautiful restored landmark mahogany wainscoting. A series of black and white photographs, carefully curated by Trunk Archive, displayed in opulent French baroque gold leaf frames, hang on the walls and each room has its own unique theme, including Great American Artists, New York Street Scenes, American Icons, and Great American Musicians. The dining rooms each feature a custom chandelier, comprised of three black iron arms supporting a 7'-6\" ivory plaster ring, created by French designer Eric Schmitt. Christian Liaigre floor lamps create a luminous glow in the American Icons-themed Dining Room. The designer used a lot of details as this to search for the delicate balance between modern and contemporary.
The guest rooms have a luxurious, urban residential apartment feel. In a nod to the Clock Tower's architecture, many guest rooms have vaulted ceilings. Rockwell Group created a tone-on-tone color palette with accents of dark wood, including an oversized walnut paneled headboard and a dark brown coffee table. The rooms are serene, comforting and feel like an oasis from the outside world. There is visual drama, too. The original windows in each room perfectly frame the New York City skyline. Many of the suites have 180-degree views of Manhattan and the 1,400 square foot penthouse apartment has 360-degree vistas. Interestingly, in each room, hung a black and white photo, as if to pay homage to the New York in the 20's_a city called \"world center\" with immense respect.
From the beginning of the last century, New York has never stopped being the fashion center of the world, and so when the New York EDITION stand out among many hotels, it is because of its own excellent design. As Ian Schrager envisaged, \"Good design is the first and most important step, it is not only to attract the attention of the guests, mostly, it attracts the heart.\"
