Studio Robert Stuart-Smith has been exploring distributed aerial robotic construction through onsite 3D Printing. This work is being undertaken through both conceptual digital simulations in parallel to physical material and 3D Printing hardware prototypes. This project speculates on the ability of UAVs to operate in remote polar regions to provide building shelters that may be built and maintained through autonomous robotic ice construction. The research developed 3D Printed ice compression shell structure construction methods that optimised building thermal performance through unique cavity construction designs. The design methodology incorporated the constraints of UAV flight and the phase-changing material properties of ice as it operates under fluctuating temperatures. The shell structures are designed with an attention to detail that emerges from the bespoke flight behaviours of the UAVs which harvest the ice from local snow deposits and print the ice structure in place in a climate that humans find difficult to operate in outdoors. The research successful embraces the temporal aspects of construction as a design opportunity. With design algorithms operating directly within robotic construction; design and construction operate as one creative process.
