Presidential Style： A New Flavor

On December 31， 2013， Xi Jinping made a New Years Day address to the nation on state television. The content of his speech， mainly good wishes and appeals for people to work together， broke no new ground. But the format， reminiscent of an American president in the Oval Office， hinted at a desire to find new ways for Chinas leaders to interact with the people. Some thought this is following the foreign statesmans example， but perhaps Xi was following the ancient wise Chinese emperor's example.

News of his visit quickly went viral， and his order — six steamed buns， a plate of stewed pig intestines and steamed vegetables — has quickly become known as the "President's Combo."

New Game Lets Users Fight Corruption

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to go after both “tigers and flies”——top officials as well as low-level bureaucrats——in his quest to fight corruption. Now ordinary Chinese citizens can join in on the fight with the click of a mouse. The website of the People's Daily newspaper， has posted a game online that gives “honest cadres” the ability to stamp out “tigers and flies” in their web browser. Fighting corruption in China is a “universal responsibility，” according to a short description of the game.

Bai Zhongren， the president of China Railway Group， jumped to his death， which is another case involving in a series of death cases and corruption cases among the heavy-debt railway system. In recent years， several senior railway officials and executives who have committed suicide since corruption scandals implicating the senior railway officials began to come to light， including Li Zhi who is the chief dispatcher of Nanning Railway Bureau. However， there have been no direct links between China Railway Group and the corruption cases.endprint

China has set new targets for its provinces to reduce air pollution by 5 to 25 percent， underscoring the government's concern about a source of public anger. Air quality in cities is of increasing concern to China's stability-obsessed leaders， anxious to douse potential unrest as a more affluent urban population turns against a growth-at-all-costs economic model. Enforcement of rules has been patchy at the local level， where authorities often rely on taxes paid by polluting industries.

China has claimed that it is "very likely" that it overtook the US as the world's top trading nation， a title the US has held for decades. According to the latest data， China's total trade grew at an annual rate of 7.6% to $4.16tn last year. There has been speculation that some Chinese exporters may be overstating their shipments. Some analysts said that even if the issue of inflated numbers was taken into account， China would still take the top spot from the US.

Chinese Smokers Account for One Third of Global Smokers

The Health Index and Assessment Center in Seattle carried out a survey， finding that the number of Chinese smokers ranked first in the world. In 2012， there were 0.281 billion smokers in China， accounting for about one third of the global smoking population. There is no national law on prohibiting smoking in China. Although the current Regulations on the Management of Public Health banned the smoking in the public sites， it is not explained in detail. Another reason for the unsuccessful banning smoking lies in lacking the strict law implementation.

The property boom in China has forced countless changes in Chinese society， but one of the more remarkable side effects has been a massive rise in the number of divorces – in Beijing alone divorces were up 41 percent in the first nine months of 2013.The number of divorces reached 39，075 in the first three-quarters of 2013 in the capital， more than the 38，197 recorded in the whole of 2012， according to data from the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau.

On Dec. 30， 2013， Chen Guangbiao said that he was planning to go to the U.S. to discuss an acquisition of the New York Times， whose value he put at around $1 billion. He says he may be a "maverick" but he doesn't like playing tricks. The netizen Stephen Ding commented the news by saying， “I just don't get why he thinks he can buy New York Times. You can't， as a Chinese， buy something that is fundamentally American and that is so ingrained in the American culture. Just like how you can't put a price tag on life， you can't put a price tag to a part of a representation of a culture”.

Zhang Yimou Fined for Violating One-Child Policy

Chinese Internet users often bemoan the fact that China's wealthy are able to easily skirt the country's one-child policy by simply paying the fines. But local officials appear to be making a point when it comes to one high-profile offender. Chinese film director Zhang Yimou and his wife， Chen Ting， were fined 7.48 million yuan by the Family Planning Bureau of Binhu District in the eastern city of Wuxi for having three children， the district government said on its verified account on Sina Weibo， China's version of Twitter.

Recent years， more and more retired Russian people came to reside in the border cities of China. These new immigrants mainly live in Hunchun city and Heihe city. Russian people moving to China mainly include two kinds of people： the entrepreneurs who seek for a sound business environment and the retired who are attracted by Chinas low price. Although more and more Russian people in the Far East are moving to China， the Russian authority has not raised the alarm and the economists didnt see it as a serious threat.

In the Yacht Exhibition held in London， Stewart McIntyre， general manager of the British Sunseeker Yacht Company explained why China was so crucial to the future of the company. He said that China is not a maritime nation， but some rich Chinese are keen on owning yachts in order to enrich their luxurious assets. Last year， Chinese Dalian Wanda Group spent 0.3 billion pounds acquiring British Sunseeker Yacht Company.
